Pancakes on Wednesdays

Welcome to Pancakes on Wednesdays.

I am just taking a break, but I'll be back soon with more pancakes.

Wednesday, December 10, 2003

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

Look it up!

COULROPHOBIA
An irrational fear of clowns.

What, fear those delightful purveyors of slapstick comedy? One may as well go in terror of Santa Claus (but then a few people do that too, sad cases of Santa Claustrophobia). But clown humour has always embraced cruelty in its teasing and insulting of other clowns and members of the audience. Clowns represent anarchy, the personifications of unreason, and a force of nature out of control. Who knows what really lies behind their unchanging painted faces and outlandish costumes? These are all good enough reasons for even the strongest and most adult of us to feel unease in the presence of a clown. Some children are terrified by them and a surprisingly large proportion of adults confess to finding them creepy and disturbing, so much so that this word for their condition has had to be invented. It’s not old—perhaps from the 1980s—and has been taken from Greek kolon, a limb, which seems strange until you find the related kolobathristes was a stilt-walker. This seems to have been the nearest its coiner could get to a suitable classical allusion, since ancient Greek didn’t have a word for a clown in our modern sense.

Happy Birthday

Arthur Fiedler 1896

Conductor; born in Boston, Mass. Trained as a violinist in Boston and Berlin, he joined the Boston Symphony (1915--30), first playing violin, then viola. Determined to conduct, he founded his own chamber orchestra, the Boston Sinfonietta, in 1924. In 1929 he launched the Esplanade summer series, free concerts by the Boston Symphony, along the Charles River. In 1930 he took over the Boston Pops Orchestra and for almost a half century he was the most beloved conductor of light-classical music in the U.S.A. Active in promoting music through various mediums, he was also made an honorary fire chief because of his practice of chasing every major fire, day or night, and became a familiar figure to Bostonians at the scene of the fires.

Those hot pancakes are more interesting to me than any fire.

Todays Wednesday field trip takes us to Riverside California.

A recent proposal was submitted to make Riverside the Pancake Capital of California.

Happy Birthday

William Safire 1929

William Safire's Rules for Writers:

Is sloppiness in speech caused by ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care.

Two confirmed bachelors sat talking, their conversation drifed from politics to cooking.

"I got a cookbook once," said one, "but I could never do anything with it."

"Too much fancy work in it, eh?" asked the other.

"You said it. Every one of the recipes began the same way -
'Take a clean dish'".

Happy Birthday

Bob Guccione 1930

Who let the dogs out?

Hey Bob, nothing but family values in here.

On this day:

1969 - TV history was made when Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki Budinger were married on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson.

Tip Toe, to the Pancakes, with me.

Tiptoe to the window, by the window that is where I'll be
Come tiptoe through the tulips with me!
Tiptoe from your pillow, to the shadow of a willow tree
And tiptoe through the tulips with me!
Knee deep in flowers will stray, we'll keep the showers away.
And if I kiss you in the garden, in the moonlight, will you pardon me?
Come tiptoe through the tulips with me!

On this day:

1777 - France recognized American independence.

The National Seal of the French Republic, was recently made, the white flag..

The only thing that we have to fear, is the fear of the French!

Hey Buddy, Can you spare a tulip or two?

On this day:

1791 - A traffic regulation in New York City established the first street to go "One Way."

I am an excellent driver.

We are counting cards!

All roads lead to Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Home of Laminates.

On this day:

1843 - "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens was published.

Tiny Tim sure looked different once he got older.

New Atomic Discovery...

The heaviest element known to science was recently discovered by GM Research physisists. The element, tentatively named Administratium, has no protons or electrons and thus has an atomic number of zero. However, it does have 1 neutron, 125 asistant neutrons, 75 vice neutrons, and 111 assistant vice neutrons. This gives it an atomic number of 312. These 312 particles are held together by a force that involves the continuous exchange of meson-like particles called morons.

Since it has no electrons, Administratium is inert. However, it can be detected chemically as it impedes every reaction that it comes in contact with. According to the discoverers, a minute amount of Adimnistratium caused one reaction to take over four days to complete when it would have normally occuered in less than one second. Administratium has a normal half-life of approximately three years, at which time it does not actually decay but instead undergoes a reorganization in which assistant neutrons, vice neutrons, and assistant vice neutrons exchange places. Some studies have shown that the atomic mass actually increases after each reorganization.

Research at other laboratories indicates that Administratium occurs naturally in the atmosphere. It tends to concentrate at certain points such as government agencies, large corporations and universities and can usually be found in the newest, best appointed and best maintained buildings.

Scientists point out that Administratium is known to be toxic at any detectable level of concentration and can easily destroy any productive reaction where it is allowed to accumulate. Attempts are being made to determine how Administratium can be controlled to prevent irreversible damage, but results to date are not promising.

Would you like some more Lynx with your pancakes?

Technically, potato pancakes are pancakes, but it is toeing the line a little.

On this day:

1903 - The first successful gasoline-powered airplane flight took place near Kitty Hawk, N.C.

Orville and Wilbur Wright made the flight.

The second flight took the brothers to the La Mera tar pits. They wanted to know just what was lurking in that murky swamp. It wasn't a fan of Pancakes on Wednesday!

After some pancakes, you can read about some military history. No extinc predators are mentioned on the site. Surprising, but noone knows everything!

1969 - The U.S. Air Force closed its Project "Blue Book" by concluding that there was no evidence of extraterrestrial spaceships behind thousands of UFO sightings.

Some Unidentified Flying objects have recently beeen spotted in the Canteen, looking Tomkow

1978 - OPEC decided to raise oil prices by 14.5% by the end of 1979.

Do you think that OPEC is considering another oil embargo now?

Stay fresh, for the next edition of Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Real Doughboys....

2000 - Terrell Owens (San Francisco 49ers) caught an NFL-record 20 passes for 283 yards and a touchdown against the Chicago Bears. The previous record was held by Tom Fears (Los Angeles Rams) with 18 catches on December 3, 1950, against the Green Bay Packers. Owens also broke Jerry Rice's franchise record of 16 receptions set in 1994 against the Los Angeles Rams.

A steady supply of pancakes, makes Terrell run better.

Would you like an abacus with your pancakes?

We are counting cards.

Pancakes are everywhere, and Elvis is just behind them.

Pancakes Wednesdays
Definitely

We were in Tucson recently and could clearly see the beautiful Catalina Mountains from our hotel balcony. We went to the Sebino Canyons - it was awesome! Too bad we missed the De Grazia Chapel. I love the picture.

We also made a day trip to Sedona - there were so many tourists! By now, we consider ourselves local so we're not counted. LOL! Probably because of the long weekend. Sedona is already beautiful but more so with everything almost lighted up. We had dinner at Tlaquepaque and enjoyed the Festival of lights.

Snow and ice has melted but we had heavy fog early this evening and rain. Couldn't even see much of anything from my view. It's cleared out now except for the rain.

Do ya all think that Tonk & Blackie had SOMETHING to do with the 6.6 earthquake in Taiwan last night?

Not to mention the 4.5 out here in my neck of the woods (DC/MD/VA).

I say EXTREME climate changes. We had beautiful weather in Kauai too. There were some clouds and rain but they only lasted for about 10-15 min and they move on. I consider myself in hibernation now.

MOJO!

I have indeed heard thy petitions, made unto My emmisary, known among Men as Sarge. Thou shalt have thy wishes made clear unto thee, and as a gift unto thee, I shall list thy words next to Mine, the which to see more clearly My mind.

1. Could you please tell us who our Daddy is? Why is it that I"m fabulously tanned and tomkow isn't? Is that a genetic defect or were you trying to prove a point? Just curious.

Ah, My child, dost thou not remember the words of My prophet, "Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart"? Such differences matter not to Me, therefore why matterest them to you?

2. Who is to be blame for coming up with the idea that Wednesdays was "over the hump" day? Was he a camel or did he just admire them? After all, a woman would never think of such a stupid thing to call Wednesdays.

It is part of My infinite understanding that, should there have been no Wednesdays, there might not be such a thing a Pancakes on Wednesday, would there not? Who gave thought to that, I ask thee?

3. Does the Goddess understand the word V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N? If so, when's she going on a paid one? Anytime soon? Just curious!

Assure thyself, My child, that She whom is known to thee and amongst My people as Goddess, revered by all, and fair in the eyes of Men, is posessed of free will, even as thee. Even as I rested from My labors on the seventh day, even so shall She for whom you show concern take Her ease.

4. Does the USPS really need another rate increase? Are they actually entitled to getting more money? If so, where are my packages? Why are they never on time?

Yes. Yes. In the mail. Because they who send thee gifts, are negligent in their timeliness.

5. I know Ma says you love everyone, but does that mean you love people from "France" as well? Really?

All of My children are precious in My sight, even as are thee, My child. And I grieve the grief of a loving parent, at the sight of My children gone astray...

6. What were you thinking when you created France? Were you having an off day? If so, could you fix that little issue for the rest of us? We can't afford or handle anymore of those types of slip ups. Honestly! Fix it now!

Mojo, My patience with thee is vast, but even so is finite. Those of My children of that land across the sea, yea, even they, Mojo, are but a part of My design, that which shall proceed at My determined pace.

7. Will Queenie be happy with this new decoration style in the Palace or will she change it out next Spring? She loves to shop. Thanks for ensuring that shopping isn't a part of my genetic structure. I hate it!

She, whom thou referest to as Bentfeather, weaver of words and chanter of song, posesses free will even as thee. She also revels in the pleasures of the bazaar and the marketplace, even as thou shalt in time;

8. Who came up with the .99 cent menu items at Wendy's? Why couldn't it have been a penny menu items? Why .99 cents? Seems a bit of an odd number to me!

They that ply their trade in the marketplaces react to their competitors' trade in turn. Study their ways and be wise...

9. When you created "freedom of the press" for humans, did you actually foresee Al Gore owning a Liberal Talk Radio station?

That which is known unto thee as "freedom of the press" is but a creation of those known unto thee as The Founding Fathers, whose divine talent proceedeth from My hands. Those who woul duse their earthly treasure to promote their views are but a part of My design, even as art thou;

10. Why is it when I call my bank that I can't seem to get anyone that speaks English? Is this a conspiracy?

Rejoice thou, My child, that people of other lands come to thy shores, to better their lives, and find their livelihoods in commerce and finance, regardless of their origins. many of these, even these, struggle to learn thy native tongue, therefore thou shalt have patience and understanding with them, even as I have unto thee;

11. Why is Boomer a female in the new "miniseries" on SciFi channel? Was there a reason for that?

Even as those with creative talent, which proceedeth from My will, express that same talent, some do so without regard to My design, or with regard to good sense. They shalt learn the ways of folly...

12. Why does MoJo have to wait six months to begin the second half of SG-1 on SciFi? Couldn't you make them hurry up already?

Turnest thou thy eyes to my previous answer, being the eleventh, for thy wisdom.

13. Do people in Hollywood actually believe what they are saying? Do they actually believe the rest of us really care about their opinions? Really?

I am heavy of heart, My child Mojo, to see the depths to which My children of talent and beauty of that small land, reduce themselves. And it is further saddening, that others of this fair land would hearken to their words, made in spite and falsehood. Be wary of them, O My child, and thou shalt not go astray.

14. Um, do you think you could tell Old Sarge to pick MoJo up on his way to a Christmas vacation that will be fun and warm? (Might I also add that I'm really good at picking out license plates from other states!)

Thy petition is pleasing, My child Mojo, as it is to the ears of My Emmisary, known among Men as Sarge, leader of the courageous, modest among Men, whose talent proceedeth from My hands. Make thy petition known unto him, by way of that steadfast messenger known unto thee as FReepmail.

15. Is Mr. Goat really undercover or is Mr. Tonkin pulling our legs? Is he just trying to hide the fact that he's finally gotten rid of Mr. Goat? Please tell us immediately!

Thy concern for the animals of the pastures, My child, is pleasing in My sight. He, who is known unto thee as Tonkin, but follows the design of his mind and heart, the which is placed therein by My infinite design;

16. Has Ma actually stayed awake at work today or she just pretending to be working as usual. Honestly, she's never really doing anything when I call to ask her a question. It's like she's waiting for me to call to get her out of working.

I charge thee to reach out to My child, Bentfeather, once more, to find out.

17. Did blackie and Mr. Tonkin's dancing really cause the Earthquake over here in my backyard? If so, could you have them do again, but send them to France to do it? Thanks!

My children, known unto thee as Tonkin and Blackie, as they rejoiced in their meeting and fellowship, most assuredly did NOT cause calamities upon the earth, as which is within My power. Do not credit them with such might, which proceedeth from My hands in wrath.

Thou dost concern Me, O My precious child, with thy aversion and wrath towards My children across the sea. Even as they are reviled, so shall they change their hearts, with time, in accordance with My design. My patience I leave unto thee, My precious Mojo.
