Murdered at 10:55pm eastern on 12/8/80. At 11:15pm Howard Cosell interrupted the Monday Night Football game between Miami and New England, as it was going into overtime, to announce:
"One of the great figures of the entire world, one of the great artists, was shot to death horribly at the Dakota Apartments, 72nd Street and Central Park West in New York City. John Lennon is dead. He was the most important member of the Beatles, and the Beatles, lead by John Lennon, created music that touched the whole of civilization. Not just people in Liverpool, where the group was born, but the people of the world."
Not that I agreed with his politics, but anyone watching that night will remember that weird moment.

Jungle Book! Louis Prima
Now I'm the king of the swingers
Oh, the jungle VIP
I've reached the top and had to stop
And that's what botherin' me
I wanna be a man, mancub
And stroll right into town
And be just like the other men
I'm tired of monkeyin' around!
Oh, oobee doo
I wanna be like you
I wanna walk like you
Talk like you, too
You'll see it's true
An ape like me
Can learn to be humen too
( Gee, cousin Louie
You're doin' real good
Now here's your part of the deal, cuz
Lay the secret on me of man's red fire
But I don't know how to make fire )
Now don't try to kid me, mancub
I made a deal with you
What I desire is man's red fire
To make my dream come true
Give me the secret, mancub
Clue me what to do
Give me the power of man's red flower
So I can be like you
You!
I wanna be like you
I wanna talk like you
Walk like you, too
You'll see it's true
Someone like me
Can learn to be
Like someone like me
Can learn to be
Like someone like you
Can learn to be
Like someone like me!

Cyber, I saw from another post on this thread that you are young enough so that you never owned a record. As much as that might irritate me (only kidding) I would reccomend some of Elton John's earliest stuff to you, if you don't already know it. Madman Across the Water, Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player, Honky Chateau, Tumbleweed Connection, if you can find these they are all great!

Something get your goat over music and/or the Beatles? I'm a Beatles fan, actually, but I would never compare McCartney with Mozart, especially if I didn't know what Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote.

You've heard Copland in countless movie soundtracks, cartoon soundtracks, and, most recently, in the "Beef" commercial.
Aaron Copland was the pioneer of American music -- he showed the world how to write classical music in an American way. He was born in 1900, when Americans were rarely recognised as composers in the music world. So Copland went to Europe for serious study, and, in the 1920s, wrote pieces with the flavour of jazz. European classical composers were also influenced by jazz at this time, as they were searching for new ways to bring their music into the 20th century.

The answer is.......
George Gershwin!

I'm afraid you just pushed me into Rc's camp. Thanks, it's been lonely here in the dog house, away from the Tiger Beat subscriber mob! But now, who would be the last century's (or better yet this century's) Wagner? Brahms? Schubert? Verdi? So many pop hero candidates, so few classical composers to compare them to!

Aaron Copeland was perhaps America's greatest composer. Unique American sound, much of it when you hear it suggests images of John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, and "Beef. It's what's for dinner".

I am fairly familer with Elton Johns body of work. Mostly via Classic Rock radio stations though.
Kinda like my Cream exposure!
I had his Greatest Hits Album (CD for those of you in OLDAGEVILLE) but I gave it to a girl in my younger years (she was a fan and it had Candle In The Wind, her fav song)

OK, I admit I haven't read the whole thread, but has no one else heard the "Steven King killed John Lennon and the government is covering it up" nutcase? He even has a website:
