Murdered at 10:55pm eastern on 12/8/80. At 11:15pm Howard Cosell interrupted the Monday Night Football game between Miami and New England, as it was going into overtime, to announce:
"One of the great figures of the entire world, one of the great artists, was shot to death horribly at the Dakota Apartments, 72nd Street and Central Park West in New York City. John Lennon is dead. He was the most important member of the Beatles, and the Beatles, lead by John Lennon, created music that touched the whole of civilization. Not just people in Liverpool, where the group was born, but the people of the world."
Not that I agreed with his politics, but anyone watching that night will remember that weird moment.

it was around 3 in the morning when I heard the news. I was cleaning the floor in our room in a castle. ( I was in PNOC in Germany at the time) The game was on and I was listening to football live from America via radio.
Hell we grew up with the Beatles, knew all their songs...I was a little bit older than the rest of the troopers having signed on when I was over 21.
I remember the reaction of one of our instructors, E-7; by the name of Sgt Rock (no kidding). He said he was glad they got the "bastard." I kept my mouth shut, after all he had a real collection of ears from the 'Nam...
But I remember commenting to myself at the time that things must be bad when they are killing the artists...
John's politics? Who cares, perhaps if he got a chance to grow older he may have changed his views, then again maybe not...

No doubt Paul is a great one - but I just am not ready call him the greatest.
Dylan was pretty darn good as well.

As long as somebody else did his songs I almost agree. He did have melodic songs and excellent lyrics but with him and his harmonica? Oh God!

Here's some coincidence for you...I as watching that game, sort of, while I was reading a recent review in Playboy with John Lennon.
A bunch of old friends and I used to hold yearly "vigils" and held that up for 18 years until we got bored with them.

Some great tunes - "Romeo and Juliet" and "Telegraph Road"
"Sultans of Swing" is my favorite Mark Knopfler song. Listen to that song a 1,000 times trying to figure out his licks. Still love it to this day. A classic IMO.

Great tune.
Amd a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain't what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole
