What's the New "Pager" Icon About? (Vanity Request for Help)
Free Republic
Posted on 12/07/2003 4:31:44 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest
I noticed this morning that a little speaker icon had popped up next to my screen name, and when I let the browser settle on it, the word "pager" appears. When I click on it, it just takes me to my comments, same as clicking on "New Messages."
Could someone please explain this innovation? Thanks.

I am getting some sound now, but not at the appropriate time. Also when I click back to go to the latest posts to find a new thread to read it clears off the pager window and puts the latest posts in it.
I don't know if it is my browser or what but it does seem the pager needs more work done on it to work real well.
Thanks for all the help you have given me.

Do you have Javascript disabled? Or are you opening a new window and using the pager there?

I believe I have Java disabled. I am opening a new window and using the pager in the new window.

WHen it says you have a new message to you, clicking the link will open a new window, correct?

Yes, when I click the link it brings up the new message. It is just when I want to go back to another thread it doesn't seem to want to do this.
I will just keep experimenting.

when it opens a new window, use that window from then on. The pager will then reuse that window over again instead of opening a new one.

I don't know what is going on but when I am posting to you my typing will just quit and I can't type anything until I click my mouse again. Also just now my pager window went to the News/Activism page and I didn't click on a thing.
There are moles running around in here.

I'll bet you know the solution to my problem:
Whenever my FR pager goes off, Media Player opens and plays the notify.wav. I assume that I need to change the program association, but to what?
Thanks in advance...

Sound's enabled, Java's enabled, and I finally found the sound symbol on the FIRST page of FR, and it's up. So, here's the acid test.

Nothing happened. No sound. Small window still says, "nothing new."
What did I do wrong?

It only shows something when someone posts TO you.

Thanks, Smith
I finally figured that one out. Was having a blonde moment.
But, I had messages on my "comment" page, and the little window still said, "nothing new," when I turned the machine on this morning. (Do you think my computer is a blonde?)

Check this thing out...I made it and hopefully it works for everyone...
http://www.ejsmithweb.com/fr/pager.asp It will give you various sounds to use instead of the one John gives as default...try it out.

LOL:
Uh, I've got my ear right up against it. It's kind of faint, but I'm pretty sure I can make it out: "all your base is belong to us."

I use Mozilla. It has a popup blocker, but you can list sites from which popups are allowed. It's in preferences/privacy/popup windows. When you get there, there's a button for "allowed sites." I just put in freerepublic.com, and now the thing works just fine.
To: DainBramage
If you are java enabled it gives you a small pop up alerting you to mail or messages.
My Panicware Popup Stopper kills it. Must HOLD CONTROL!
To: kitkat
Kitkat, did you get your pager chime working? Mine finally worked for me this evening. It's cool. It apparently doesn't work to do a self ping.
