What's the New "Pager" Icon About? (Vanity Request for Help)
Free Republic
Posted on 12/07/2003 4:31:44 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest
I noticed this morning that a little speaker icon had popped up next to my screen name, and when I let the browser settle on it, the word "pager" appears. When I click on it, it just takes me to my comments, same as clicking on "New Messages."
Could someone please explain this innovation? Thanks.

Your link worked for me. Thanks!
Is your link something I should save under my favorites and then just minimize when I turn the computer on each morning?

I make it my home page, and I can get to the forum from there...
But I'm still not getting sounds. Maybe my popup blocker stops them.

Here's another question: There used to be a link called POST in the top right corner. Where does one go to post a new thread now ?

I think a lot of people are not actually opening the pager at all from that link because they have something blocking popups.... I use the pager all the time, and I couldn't get it to open from that link because my IE stopped the popup. So it blocked the pager from opening, and reverted to My Comments.
Ah, that's interesting. I just tested your theory, and it's true with regard to my Safari browser, which does block popups. I was able to use your other link, and have used the pager with Safari in the past, but for some reason, the link from the pager speaker is blocked. Good catch.

I tried making it my home page, but even with my pop-up blocker disabled it won't take me to the forum. Arrrgh.

Good! Glad that worked... I saved that as a shortcut on my desktop... and that is how I get to the forum. I leave that window open all the time while I am FReeping or waiting for someone to respond... and get notifications.
I made little screencaps of what folk should see if it is working.... the top is when there isn't anything new... and the bottom is a notification.

I'm using the blocker that comes with the Google toolbar. I do have it disabled, yet it won't let me get to the Forum. Frustrating!
To: Howlin
It's working now, used Freeper's underlined link and minimized it.

Panicware works the best for that very reason, IMO.

Are you using a pop-up blocker? If so, which one? Mine, which comes with the Google toolbar, won't let me navigate from the FR alert page to the forum, even when I have it disabled.

Panicware works the best for that very reason, IMO. Yup, its small, free and has different levels of sensitivity...
I would recommend it.

Silly question - I've forgotten how to save as a shortcut to my desktop. I have FR as a desktop icon but probably had my 9 year old niece do it for me. LOL
