What's the New "Pager" Icon About? (Vanity Request for Help)
Free Republic
Posted on 12/07/2003 4:31:44 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest
I noticed this morning that a little speaker icon had popped up next to my screen name, and when I let the browser settle on it, the word "pager" appears. When I click on it, it just takes me to my comments, same as clicking on "New Messages."
Could someone please explain this innovation? Thanks.

Actually, I wonder if it isn't in your Free Republic Preferences... How do you have this set? Look under your Name, then Preferences.... Mine is set at the middle option.
Windows
Most browsers are capable of creating new browser windows. You may elect to allow the forum to create new browser windows when clicking marked links. Links which are programmed to open in another browser window will be marked with a ^. Self Links will not be opened in new browser windows. Blank Marked links will be opened in a new browser window.
Slave Marked links will be opened in a single "slave" browser window. This allows one to leave open a list of articles in the master window, while reading the articles in a slave window.

Thanks. I had that same option set already, so I think it probably is an IE issue.
To: governsleastgovernsbest
Maybe.... But I use IE too....
Which links don't let you get back to the forum? - just the ones at the bottom of the pager? - or the one that should open up your comments after a notification?

I went to popup manager and clicked on "allow popups from this site".

And I am up because there are people here who don't have thumbs that wanted a door opened. I wrote this for the late great Brian, many years ago, who understood the doorknob principle purrfectly - he would get up on his back paws, put one front paw on each side of the knob, and try desperately to turn it. No traction, though - I always wondered what would have happened if I'd taped a piece of sandpaper around it. Anyhow:
He could open any door
Put a Band-Aid on a sore
If he only had a thumb.
He could play a bass guitar
Write to a movie star
If he only had a thumb.
Shuffling cards, picking flowers
Knitting sweaters by the hour
He could climb the Eiffel Tower
If he only had a thumb.

Oh, I love that.
And he would have gone shopping, because if he could open a door, you know he could drive. :-)

"It's good there's finally a short cut for it. I always have one window dedicated to the pager." Same here. I find it somewhat amusing that there are so many FReepers that know nothing of this feature. Perhaps they haven't been issued their secret decoder rings yet. I agree that it is good to have the shortcut. Nevertheless, this should be amusing watching the rest of them trying to figure it out. It pages across all forums again now too. I thought John would NEVER get that fixed.

Thanks!Ping is sonar jargon.... You can let someone know about an article they might like to read by 'pinging them' to an article.... type their name in and they will see it in their comments. Some people have "ping lists" of people who like to follow particular issues.
"bump" and BTTT (Back to the top) just means someone liked or agreed with the article but had nothing to say about it... So they "bumped it to the top" of the latests comments page by making a reply so that other people would see it.

Actually he hated cars so badly that when we were making that Last Trip to the vet, and he couldn't even stand (post-stroke), he tried to get out of the box. I told him if he could, we wouldn't have to go. It's been four years, and I still miss him every day.
I've wandered way off the topic - I won't be using the notify thing, because I mostly freep at work, but I was reading over Steve's shoulder & saw the "people without thumbs" comment and just had to post Brian's song.
