What's the New "Pager" Icon About? (Vanity Request for Help)
Free Republic

I noticed this morning that a little speaker icon had popped up next to my screen name, and when I let the browser settle on it, the word "pager" appears. When I click on it, it just takes me to my comments, same as clicking on "New Messages."
Could someone please explain this innovation? Thanks.

The google toolbar thing is working for me. I clicked on the popup disabler, and it now allows popups, but only on this site. I've got my little pager window open, and it self-clicks to refresh.
It makes the exact same mail chime as my IE Inbox.

Or you could dump IE and get Mozilla. It has the feature built in to the browser. No additional spyware to add to your system.

To Self - Test Pager.

Right click somewhere in the window and choose "Create Shortcut" (in IE)

When I open it as my home page, I get 2 windows: the small pager window, and a full-size window that lets me either open a full-size pager window or return to the forum. I click the link on that one that goes to the forum.
I don't get the sound, though...I get little clicks when it refreshes, but that's all. When I first started using it, it chimed, but it doesn't now.

Hmmmm.... I am also using the Google toolbar blocker, and mine will open new windows from links here on FR.
Do you have your browser in general set to allow stuff to open in new windows? - Or when you click links here does it always open in the same window?

It's not working well in Opera 7.23, even with Javascript (not Java as many here have irrelevantly related) enabled. It goes to a redirect page, then quickly - too quickly to manually click on the link - back to the forum.

Thank God! Do NOT consider buying them a set of opposable thumbs. Otherwise, your bathroom privacy would be zilch.

I have a popup blocker running too. The speaker icon didn't work the first time I tried it and then someone mentioned the popup blocker.
With the popup blocker that I'm using, you just hold the "control" key down and then click the speaker icon and it works fine.
Try that and see if it works.

To get the sound, you probably need to enable the sound in your control panel. Scroll down in the comments and you'll see a couple people explaining how to do it. I didn't find "Classic Phone Tool" but did find a "phone" that was unchecked. I checked that and the alert starting working.

I'm using Firebird. I went to my options and set up the popup blocker so that it permitted FR popups. Works fine now.

Did your self-test work?Mine didn't,but maybe thats because your own posts no longer change the My Comments as they used to.

Well, I've found a solution. If I hold down "shift" while hitting on the Forum link, it will take me there!
To: John W
You only see "New Comments" when people post to you now. John FIxed that a few days ago.

Right, and I like that. But,does that mean these self-tests of the pager are useless?
