Former Sen. Paul Simon Awaits Heart Surgery, Endorses Dean From Hospital Bed The Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Former Sen. Paul Simon has been hospitalized for a heart condition. The 75-year-old Simon was admitted to St. John's Hospital after suffering shortness of breath on Thursday, when he had planned to announce his endorsement of Democratic presidential contender Howard Dean.

Simon, who sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988, went ahead with the announcement in a telephone conference call, but he didn't tell reporters he was speaking from a hospital bed.

Simon said by telephone Friday he will undergo a single or double bypass operation on Monday, as well as have a leaky heart valve repaired.

Simon, who runs the Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, underwent coronary artery bypass surgery in January 1999.

It depends on one's taste, I guess. I'm deeply offended by jokes about dead cats, just as some are deeply offended by jokes about (hopefully) soon to be dead liberals!

His daughter is the assistant states attorney in the county I live in. She seems nice but there's that liberal thing about her that I can't seem to forget.

Shouldn't Howard the Coward come with a warning label?

Endorsing or voting for this candidate is known to have caused shortness of breath, and may lead to lighter wallets, reduced prosperity, weaker defense, and other maladies.

I had the privilege of meeting and conversing with Sen. Simon and his late wife a few years ago. Both they and my wife and I and some friends had sung at the annual LaSalle Bank's Do It Yourself Messiah (that year at Symphony Hall, Chicago), and they happened to come to the same restaurant that we did afterwards. I hear he's got a fine bass voice. I waited until after they were done eating and then introduced myself. He and his wife came over to our table and introduced themselves to our entire table. Say what you will about his politics, but is a man of integrity.

Does this mean there's another Democrat rally on the way?

Capt. Ahab to Moby Dick: "From hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee."

Paul Simon to America: "Ditto."

If you are in a hospital bed near death, Dean might just be as good as president as any other ...

I wish him well but what a goofball. Doesn't he have more important issues to deal with as he goes in for surgery?
