CIA 'Jane Bond' breaks cover
The Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | 12/04/03 | Alec Russell

Posted on 12/03/2003 5:25:35 PM PST by Pokey78

The CIA spy at the centre of a row over allegations that the White House endangered national security by leaking her identity appears to have undermined her supporters' case by appearing in Vanity Fair.

Valerie Plame and her husband, Joseph Wilson, a former ambassador, are pictured in next month's edition looking glamorous in their Jaguar car.

Sunglasses and a headscarf provide the only disguise for the woman the celebrity magazine calls "the most famous female spy in America".

Just two months ago Mr Wilson said his wife had authorised him to say that she would "rather chop off her right hand than say anything to the press and she will not allow herself to be photographed".

He was speaking after the Justice Department announced it was investigating claims that the White House leaked his wife's role to journalists after he caused a major political embarrassment for President George W Bush.

Mr Wilson was responsible for debunking the claim that Saddam Hussein sought uranium "yellowcake" from Niger, one of the administration's most serious allegations about Iraq's suspected weapons of mass destruction programme. The claim appeared in Mr Bush's State of the Union address in January.

The leaking of his wife's identity to a conservative columnist was widely seen as a way of undermining Mr Wilson's credentials for the fact-finding mission that he undertook to Niger last year when he concluded there was nothing to the "yellowcake" claim.

Mr Wilson argued that the leaking undermined national security and blew the cover of Ms Plame's contacts. The leak may have broken a law that bans the unveiling of an agent's identity.

Mr Wilson yesterday defended the Vanity Fair feature, which described his wife, whom he calls "Jane Bond", as "a slim 40-year-old with white blonde hair and a big bright smile".

"The pictures should not be able to identify her, or are not supposed to," he told The Washington Post.

Her photo is in a magazine? Really??!!

Hmmm...wonder if any other "agent" or snitch will have their life endangered because her photo is in a magazine?

Obviously, the concern she expressed over compromising field operations has passed.

Not true. Bush said "sought". Wilson said "bought."

Any mention in the article about Wilson being an advisor to the Kerry campaign, and possibliy receiving money from the anti-Iraq war Saudis?

The couple have a lot of nice, expensive toys...

The CIA spy at the centre of a row...

So she's a spy, eh? I was in the Navy for 6 years as an engine room mechanic. Does this mean that I can tell people that I was a paratrooper or commando? Yeah, right!!

Come over here too to see Wilson's supportive review of MoveOn.org's propaganda antiwar movie on Iraq.
