Who owns 'public' land?

Nearly 100 ranchers gathered in Farmington, N.M., last weekend to listen to Wayne Hage and his wife, former Congresswoman Helen Chenoweth-Hage, explain how the "public" land on which their cattle graze may not be "public" at all. The U.S. Court of Federal Claims found, in Hage v. United States, that the ranchers, not the federal government, may be the true owners of the property referred to as "public" land.

Environmental organizations, and agencies of the federal government, have been trying to rid the West of cattle for decades. The Hage decision demonstrates that the "ownership" of the forage, water and migration routes, may actually belong to the ranchers, and not to the government.

The Hage case may pull the rug, floor and foundation from the government's efforts to exercise control of land that it may not own...

I predict some "cult" will be incinerated in their "compound" before the Feds give up one shred of control over public lands.

No one 'owns' any property. I 'own' the lot I live on but really, I'm just renting. Have to pay taxes on it or the Co. will confiscate and sell it. So who really owns it?

Who ultimately owns the land is not a trivial question. I don't believe that it has been adequately answered.

Isn't the land of the "free and home of the brave", what happened to this Country when the people are more afraid of the government then the Mafia? How did it get so bad that we don't own ANYTHING anymore and why haven't the people stood up and demanded their Country back? Has apathy and ignorance become the norm? The time to take action and demand our government to return to it Constitutional principals and restore the republic for which it stands is NOW.

Environmentalists have been trying to rid the West of cattle in agreement with the Bill Clinton philosophy of having no agriculture in the U.S. and having all our food grown in 3rd world countries. The flaw in this idea is that 3rd world countries are unable to grow and raise enough for themselves, let alone us.

Thanks for reminding me - my county property tax bill is due next week!!!

But all kidding aside, the definition of "private property" has become so blurry as to not even be funny.

So explain to me how having a temporary lease to run cattle ends up being ownership of the land? Are these ranchers getting public land without buying it?

I'm not ready to jump on their band wagon.

The people revel in their slavery. A gilded cage is STILL a cage.

Its amazing how most people I talk to know all about their favorite football, baseball, hockey etc team and know nothing about the Declaration of Independence and/or the Constitution and don't want to know. Yet these same people will bi*ch and complain all the time.
