A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

From The Loxahatchee River Historical Society, Jupiter, Florida Website:

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is the oldest existing structure in Palm Beach County, FL. It was completed and first lit on July 10, 1860. The lighthouse stands on an ancient Indian shell mound, dated around 700 AD and is 108 feet high with 105 steps from the base to the top.

The light was produced by a first order Fresnel lens made by the Henry-Lepaute Company in Paris. The rotating lens flashes (burst of light when bulls-eye passes viewer's line of vision) is 1.2 seconds, eclipses (darkens) 6.6 seconds, flashes 1.2 seconds, eclipses 21 seconds, and then repeats the cycle. The light can be viewed approximately 20 miles out at sea.

George Gordon Meade, a Lieutenant at the Bureau of Topographical Engineers and later the general who defeated Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg, designed the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. Work began on the mound in 1853, but slowed when the inlet filled with silt, the Third Seminole War erupted from 1855 to 1858, and Florida's notorious heat, humidity, and insects took their toll on the workmen.

After the light was lit in 1860, a group of Confederate sympathizers, including some of the Lighthouse Keepers, sneaked into the tower and removed enough of the lamp and revolving mechanism to make it unserviceable. Throughout the war, the light remained dark.

After the war, sections of the lens assembly were returned, and the light once again beamed on June 28, 1866. Captain James Armour became the lighthouse keeper and would serve for forty-two years.

During World War II, it was necessary for wartime safety to dim the lighthouse through the use of a low-wattage bulb. Several ships were sunk offshore, and the sad duty of recovering the bodies as they washed ashore fell to the Lighthouse Keepers.

In 1959, the two-story Lighthouse Keeper's dwelling was torn down and new quarters were built. In 1973, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was put on the National Register of Historic Places. For a number of years, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was painted a "firehouse" red, but during the 1999 restoration, the tower's color was returned to the natural red brick. The work on the tower took 8 months and cost $850,000.

The Loxahatchee River Historical Society administers the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. The lighthouse is owned and maintained as an active maritime aid to navigation by the U.S. Coast Guard.

They go near the Jupiter Inlet and anchor - on an island there is a restaurant where they go, and then spend the night aboard ship, catching up on their lives.

It's wonderful that they have each other to do this with. The closeness in age probably has a lot to do with their closeness in adulthood.

That's why I'm anxious to move back home - to be closer to my parents and only sister while I still have them. Unfortunately, the employers down there are not cooperating. :-(

A very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to you and your wonderful family ((((((LadyX)))))))). Thank you for your kind words.

"just 14 1/2 months apart in age. "

That's what my family calls Irish twins. Nice that they spend time together, LadyX.

Happy Thanksgiving All

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Lucy of a Different Species..:))

It was great for my sons to be so close together, having the same group of friends growing up, and similar challenges and problems at the same time.
Always had someone to play with and discuss things with, moving often as we did; quite an asset.

We moved back to Florida when they were 14 and 15, and they're both Floridians at heart, and likely to remain so.

((((Hugs))) from Lucy and me.

My brothers, my sister and myself are all close in age. After my niece had her first baby (Ashley), she wanted another soon after. Chas and her hubby saw how we were all close as adults and wanted that for their children. Her and her hubby were then Blessed with Meggie. Same age difference as me and my sister Moe.

I Pray that one day soon dansangel, you get back to your beloved Florida. Reading through the thread, I see you wanted to be a Lawyer. Go for it, you are never too old to go back to school. We need lawyers with your compassion and knowledge out there!!!

Thank you - I know He listens. All things in His time and for His purpose. I have to keep reminding myself of this.

Reading through the thread, I see you wanted to be a Lawyer. Go for it, you are never too old to go back to school.

I was 36 when I first entered law school in 1992. I am now pushing 50 pretty hard. It was difficult at 36 feeling as though I was old enough to be my fellow classmates' mother - don't want to return feeling like I could be their grandmother - LOL!

Seriously, I thank you for your vote of confidence, but times have changed and I'm content to "go with the flow." Maybe I'll go back to take some criminal justice courses just for my own edification, but law school is out.

(((((((HUGS)))))) to you and Lucy!

A very special Happy Thanksgiving to you and Eve, Dubya.
Appreciate all the things you and The Mayor and others post here to inspire and encourage us in our walks.

Prayers, naturally, for all those serving in the military, and their families. To them we owe a tremendous debt...they will not be forgotten as were many of our fine men and women in the past...

Guard soldiers returning from Iraq on Thanksgiving

Associated Press
Nov. 26, 2003 06:00 PM

Thanksgiving will have an extra special meaning for some Arizona Army National Guard soldiers.

Gov. Janet Napolitano's office said 33 members of G Company of the Army Guard's 285th Aviation Regiment will return to Phoenix on Thursday after being called to active federal duty in March and serving in Iraq since May.

The soldiers will be the first group of Arizona Army Guard soldiers to return home from Iraq, Napolitano's office said.

Napolitano will greet the soldiers when they arrive at Sky Harbor International Airport. They will arrive aboard an Arizona Air Guard aircraft on a flight from a demobilization station at Fort Hood, Texas.

Those soldiers' return comes as 450 other Arizona Guard soldiers in five units prepare for December callups for duty in Iraq or elsewhere as part of the Pentagon's latest troop-rotation plan.

Approximately 1,270 of its soldiers remain on federal active duty, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or the United States.

Thankyou LadyX for your kind words, and Thankyou Dubya for your inspiring posts.

When I cooked in the Army I had a great time cooking 30 huge turkeys, stuffing, mashed taters, gravy etc.......
We worked our tails off to make the food as close to homemade as possible, after all we were going home,
most of the troops weren't. Nothing quite like cooking for a few thousand guys and seeing their faces while
they enjoyed a good meal, Quite gratifying. We had a great crew at the messhall I worked at for 3 1/2 years..
