A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

From The Loxahatchee River Historical Society, Jupiter, Florida Website:

The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is the oldest existing structure in Palm Beach County, FL. It was completed and first lit on July 10, 1860. The lighthouse stands on an ancient Indian shell mound, dated around 700 AD and is 108 feet high with 105 steps from the base to the top.

The light was produced by a first order Fresnel lens made by the Henry-Lepaute Company in Paris. The rotating lens flashes (burst of light when bulls-eye passes viewer's line of vision) is 1.2 seconds, eclipses (darkens) 6.6 seconds, flashes 1.2 seconds, eclipses 21 seconds, and then repeats the cycle. The light can be viewed approximately 20 miles out at sea.

George Gordon Meade, a Lieutenant at the Bureau of Topographical Engineers and later the general who defeated Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg, designed the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. Work began on the mound in 1853, but slowed when the inlet filled with silt, the Third Seminole War erupted from 1855 to 1858, and Florida's notorious heat, humidity, and insects took their toll on the workmen.

After the light was lit in 1860, a group of Confederate sympathizers, including some of the Lighthouse Keepers, sneaked into the tower and removed enough of the lamp and revolving mechanism to make it unserviceable. Throughout the war, the light remained dark.

After the war, sections of the lens assembly were returned, and the light once again beamed on June 28, 1866. Captain James Armour became the lighthouse keeper and would serve for forty-two years.

During World War II, it was necessary for wartime safety to dim the lighthouse through the use of a low-wattage bulb. Several ships were sunk offshore, and the sad duty of recovering the bodies as they washed ashore fell to the Lighthouse Keepers.

In 1959, the two-story Lighthouse Keeper's dwelling was torn down and new quarters were built. In 1973, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was put on the National Register of Historic Places. For a number of years, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was painted a "firehouse" red, but during the 1999 restoration, the tower's color was returned to the natural red brick. The work on the tower took 8 months and cost $850,000.

The Loxahatchee River Historical Society administers the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. The lighthouse is owned and maintained as an active maritime aid to navigation by the U.S. Coast Guard.

It's funny you mention being a juror. I was, once - in 1986. It was in Palm Beach County, FL and I was picked to serve on an assault case.

It led me to go back to school to finish a degree in Political Science and go on to be accepted to 4 law schools. Unfortunately, I was embroiled in a messy divorce/child custody scenario when I started law school in the Fall of 1992 and ended up dropping out after my first semester.

[sigh] I've been a "frustrated prosecutor" ever since - can you tell? LOL!

Please tell me ya'll fried the guy.

We didn't. Hear me out.

The guy was obviously as guilty as sin. He stared at us smugly throughout the trial which took exactly one day. He sneered at the victim (an older woman) when she got up on the stand. I wanted to deck him.

The fact is, the state simply failed to prove its case. The victim couldn't even make a positive ID. The prosecutor was a slick, bottom-of-the-class graduate who spent more time looking at himself in the mirror in the morning than he did preparing the case.

The prosecutor skated through his whole presentation because he thought he had it in the bag. He didn't. We all agreed that we *hated* to acquit, but we had no choice.

That's what convinced me to go back to school and ultimately become a prosecutor. Unfortunately, it wasn't in the cards and now I'm *way* too old to start over! :-)

The background you've created is perfect, dansy!
You knew I'd love the coverage of the Jupiter Lighthouse, in my 'neighborhood' area...:))

My son, Kevin, who lives in Lake Worth, has a cabin cruiser, and although he and Steve, my older one in Davie, do mostly family camping and boating activities, every now and then the two of them slip away on it.
They go near the Jupiter Inlet and anchor - on an island there is a restaurant where they go, and then spend the night aboard ship, catching up on their lives.
It's wonderful to think of them enjoying one another this way at this end of life, just as they did when they were young, just 14 1/2 months apart in age.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and .45MAN, and to all The Finest Family.
