Farmer's house to be destroyed in a matter of hours.

Well, Free Republic can't help.

The farmer is at his gate with it locked. The police are there and now the county is going to have to get a court order to cut his lock. It is only a matter of hours before they tear down his house! Aren't we proud of our BIG GOVERNMENT saving us from ourselves!

His house might flood. So the government will destroy it so it can't flood!

Sad day on Bethel Island, CA in Contra Costa County.

Here is the police car, the police filling out some kind of papers. You can just see the farmer. He has only one eye and has a patch over his right eye.

Here is a link to the original thread. It was a plea for help, but it didn't work.

Since the government can do no wrong, this farmer must be 'with the terrorists'.

Something like this happened near my home in Pennsylvania, a few miles down the road.

A family bought a plot of land that was zoned or deed-restricted for farming.

They built a house on the land - a farmhouse!

A local "conservation" group took them to court and got a judgement against them and the county razed their house. Who hasn't heard of a farmhouse on a farm!

Well these conservation ninnies (or I should say Nazis) didn't like it and found a judge to buy into it.

As I've said before, "You don't own anything in this country if the government wants your property or your property stands in the way of 'progress'. You only squat on property here in the US. The 'real owners' (Any branch of government) can take possession at any time.

This has been a fact of life in the US almost since its inception, or at least since the 1790's.

The Farmer's House is on Bethel Island, CA.

It is the house at the top of the picture. That is Piper Slough at the bottom of the picture. The houses along the levee are built up on pilling. The ground level is below sea level. There numerous housed built on the ground without pilling on the south end of Bethel Island. The people in those houses should be nervous about this destructive nature of Big Government!

we should keep an eye on the sky for Gorgon ships. Their yellow I think.

By the way, is the farmer named Arthur Dent?

Pangalacticgargleblasters are in order if you spot one of the ships.

I don't think I ever heard about this.

Somebody wants that property. The question is, who? The Nature Conservancy? The State?

If they take that house to prevent flooding where does that leave the folks in West Point?

I just checked the flood zone using InterFlood. The FEMA panel is 0603370210D Zone "D" dated 8/2/1982. The map is titled "Floodscape".

I have no clue what type of flood hazard area "D" represents. I'm used to "A" and "B" being flood areas and "C" and "X" being non flood areas.

If they're so concerned about flooding, why can't they get him some sandbags?

it sure is - the county wants the land to build a new homeless shelter

If they're concerned enough about the homeless to raze other peoples' property, why not just eliminate property taxes instead and leave it at that?

Doesn't anyone think this might be a good idea? If it's an unpermitted house in a flood plain, I like the fact that government enforces the zoning law equally. To do otherwise is to invite anarchy.

For those who don't think equal enforcement is a good idea, may I put a hog farm and tanning factory next to your house?

Bad example: he already had a house there and has had it for years. A better example would be: what if I decide that your own house lies on a seismic fault, and must be razed - and will be treated as it it's pure anthrax (at your expense) unless you pay to have it tested. Every single ounce tested - can't be too careful! Anthrax is bad stuff!

I'm not familiar with all the in's and out's of flood plains, but if this man has to leave his home, why not all the people in Southampton, NY?
Miami Beach, FL?
Galveston, TX?
Mobile, AL?
How about all the flooding in Houston??

Looks to me like any beach, canal, lake area should have to do the same - regardless of the value of the property or the financial clout of its residents!

Al, if the building is indeed his house, he's lied to the authorities way back when. What is his side of the story? If he brought the home on to the property knowing he couldn't live there, and IS living there, who really is to blame?

I can see that if the risk is high, but how can anyone make someone leave their property and destroy it if they are willing to live there without insurance? Is the property paid for and owned by the farmer? This seems like more than just a flood issue.

If a bank holds a mortgage on the property, one of the recent forms they have you sign says that if they do end up requiring you to get flood insurance, you'll get it.
