I like pop culture, to a certain point. I don't get consumed by it. I think Charen is liking the sound of her own voice venting in this one. When Guttenberg invented the printing press people were outraged. Whatever... I happen to like Brittany AND Eminem, and 50cent... but I also listen to Toby Keith, Lynard Skynard, etc. AND I love NASCAR but I think if I lived down South would be a big Bubba Blackwell fan. Not all pop culture is awful.

I have a young child, so I know what she means about the clicker.
Last week I put the clicker and the tv in the closet. They're not coming back out until the election.

A recent test revealed that something like 7 percent of professional baseball players tested positive for steroids. And something like 90% of them would test positive for pot, which is why they aren't tested for it.

"Not only is he not denounced by his fellow candidates, they take turns buttering him up and suggesting coyly that he'd make a heck of a running mate." Dear John,
I don't do a whole lot of praying, but I sincerely pray that Howard Dean wins the Dem nomination and picks Al Sharpton as his running mate.
It would pretty much bury the Democratic Party for the next 20 years. And, it would be the best laugh since Dukakis put on a tankers helmet.
Regards,
L

My young nephew recently visited us; he grew up in a Bulgarian orphanage until he was seven and knew no English when he arrived in the United States to live with my brother and his wife.
We were all driving around in a van one day when out of nowhere he blurted out, "I'm as harmless as Kobe Bryant!"
His parents, who are accustomed to his underdeveloped language skills, asked him what made him decide to say such a thing. He said he heard it on Fox News (which is the station his mother has on all day - he is home-schooled) on Greta van Susteren's program.
We told him that probably was not a good thing to say and he would understand why when he got a little older.
I will be chuckling about that one for a long, long time...

It won't make any difference. Honestly, Leiberman is the only one that could get 35% nationwide, but the libs won't nominate him. So any of the others may draw 15%.
Now the Republican dream scenario. Sadam and Bin Hidin both dead, WMD's found in Syria because they leaked, IRAN, the newest middle east democracy, the Dow @12000, Iraq sending us oil at reduced prices cause they dropped out of OPEC, interest rates still 5%, unemployment @5% and falling, no terrorists attacks in 6 months, Araphat with lead poisioning, the deficit at 1/2 what the Dems say in their ads, Jacko in prison with a new boyfriend, and Babs charged with money laundering for the Dem party. They don't have much to run on now, but with this scenario, they would just mumble to themselves in the debates.

But we can't change the channel, because this isn't just a television invention. This is our culture. Poignant article. TV has been bothering me for a long time. My newest pet peeve is this sexual dysfunction commercial being run over and over again at night, beginning around 6:00 p.m. during family viewing hours.
Then there is the constant having to explain this homosexuality BS to my children. It really bothers me that my children would find out about homosexuality before they had a chance to learn and understand the God given beautiful gift of pure and righteous sex within a marriage BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN. And you can't listen to the radio any more because the D.Js are down right FILTHY. I get so angry with them. Just play the record and shut up. No one cares what you have to say. UGH!
The questions I have to answer about disgusting and vile things are endless. I use to feel like I needed to answer them some how. Now I just tell them they're too young and we'll talk about it later. The point is well taken though, that its not just T.V. She is sadly right about it being our culture. You cant get away from it.

...and china throws off the old commies and accepts the fact that the four years (!) that taiwan was actually a part of china is not enough to support their claim that it is a renegade province.

I think this is a bit of hysteria from Ms. Charen. There isn't anything mentioned here that is not within her control. You can always turn the TV off or leave it on a channel more suited for young kids.
There's also reading to them and teaching kids that there are other forms of entertainment.
The way to get along with popular culture right now is to somewhat ignore it. Either that or go through the painful explainations. They're going to have to learn about it sooner or later anyway and if it doesn't come from the parents, it's going to come from somewhere else.
