California Senate has voted to repeal SB 60! (Drivers' Licenses for Illegals Being REPEALED Now!)
Posted on 11/24/2003 4:34:03 PM PST by ElkGroveDan
The California Senat is now voting on SB 1XXX by Senator Rico Oller to repeal SB 60, the dirvers license of illegal aliens bill.
Reports are that the Democrats have been scared into supporting this. The recall exit polls showed it was the number one issue.

It is a full and total repeal of the measure. I'm speechless. It's too good to be true.
What's the catch?

Some of us who thought California was irredeemable may have to reconsider.

They would have never repealed this if there wasn't a referendum which was about to qualify.I agree. The referendum can still go on the ballot in March, can't it? (Assuming that it qualifies.)
To: ambrose
They don't want the referendum to go forward. Much easier to come back with a new bill with "security measures" if they don't suffer an overwhelming repudiation via referendum...Does the referendum specifically repeal SB60 and nothing else, or can it be voted on in the absence of SB60 to ban CDLs for illegals?

Does this mean that Tom Torlakson actually voted to repeal this travesty? I'm shocked. I'm still not gonna vote him ...

Thanks I just vote in that KCRA poll and here are the latest numbers:
Do you think undocumented immigrants should be able to obtain a California drivers' license?
Percentage of 4927 Votes
Yes 439 9%
No 4449 90%
I have no opinion on this issue 39 1%
Thank you for taking part in this informal survey.

Referendum does nothing more than repeal SB60 (and stay enforcement pending the election).

In C.S. Lewis book,
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the White Witch has cast a spell in which it is always winter, but never Christmas. The sign that the spell is broken is when Father Christmas appears to hand out presents to whomever he encounters. Shortly afterwards, spring follows.
Perhaps California has been under an evil spell. Perhaps Father Christmas has just appeared, and soon Spring will make her entrance.

When would the referendum take place? November 2004? That might affect who goes to the polls that day.

Referendum does nothing more than repeal SB60 (and stay enforcement pending the election). That's bad news 'cause I'm betting Cedillo will be back with another law.

Yes, let's clear the board of all (D)'s.

Does the referendum specifically repeal SB60 and nothing else, or can it be voted on in the absence of SB60 to ban CDLs for illegals? An initiative (as opposed to a referendum) would be required to do that. However, California judges have a nasty habit of declaring initiatives that pass unconstitutional.

What about that final-hour legislation mandating health care for businesses that Gray Davis signed at the last moment? Any talk of a referendum repealing that?

KFI's 'John & Ken' Talk Radio Show is reporting that a compromise has been struck. Bill exits Committee after just one hour, votes come in Senate and Assembly, next year a new Drivers License for Illegals Bill comes...
...with the Security Checks that now Re-Called Gov. GRAY DAVIS vetoed 2 years ago.
...This is about what ARNOLD said his position was during the Recall Election.
...ARNOLD does know how to work things behind the scenes, alright.

Very interesting. As a confirmed cynic, I would like to know what kind of a "deal" was struck with the RATs for some sort of future treachery? This is very uncharacteristic of them, so used are they to getting their way every time with the last butt-wipe governor. Those scumbags do not scare easily, so I wonder what Arnold had to give up for this?

One problem, IIRC, John and Ken were saying, last week that if they do repeal the law, then it will not go into effect until March or April and will cause a run on licenses in the first few months of 2004.
THis could be a bad thing!
Anybody else hgear anything like this?

I would say all the people that questioned Arnold as not being conservative enough should be pretty convinced right now.
I'm really glad I voted for him. I don't think that McClintock could have ever gotten support to get things done. Arnold is popular among the people and the dems know this. This is going to be fun to watch!
