Time and SP Times ^

Interesting map of Unemployment in last week's Time magazine. Looks like unemployment may not be much of an issue in PA, IA, MN (states lost by Bush), but could be in other areas. Feel free to comment:

TOPICS: Editorial; Politics/Elections; US: California; US: Minnesota; US: North Carolina; US: South Carolina; US: Texas; US: Washington
KEYWORDS: bluezone; bushrecovery; election; electionmap; electionmaps; electoralvotes; ev; jobmarket; map; maps; poll; polls; redzone

If you want to really list it, WA, OR, CA, NM, IL, WI, MI and NY are all Gore states with higher unemployment than other states. Out of those states, Karl Rove definitely has his eye on WI, OR and NM as very close states in easy reach of Bush winning.
I do not believe the rest are truly in play. WA could be in play before CA or MI.

Great Maps but on those States that lost most jobs, how many have Dem. governors? HUMMMMMM?
To: 11th_VA
Manufacturing has been dying in this country for a long time. Free trade has of course hurt becuase countries with cheap labor will of course get the jobs over countries where it is expensive to live and work. Nothing new here. And now we have the same problem with programmer types of jobs that are outsourced to cheaper code- manufacturing countries.
The question is what do we do about it? Protectionism? Where does it stop?
Self-restraint, stop buying imports? I don't see that happening, either.
The Democrats have no better plan and proved it during the last administration.

But, this is too easy to turn around into a liability:
"It's Bush's fault - see, his policies intentionally punish the states that didn't vote for him."

OPEN ASSIGNMENT
MISSION TO SAVE AMERICAN JOBS
November 23, 2003
President Bush:
Mr. President your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to recover the 3+ million jobs lost on your watch. You are to find where they went, recover them, and prevent this from happening again.
You have until November 2004 to complete this mission.
If you choose not to accept this mission, or are incapable of performing, don't run in the GOP Primary so another Republican can accept this important mission for America.
American Citizen Voter
PS Ronald Reagan was the last Republican to understand. Ross Perot sent a warning to your Dad but since then all we hear is the mantra, 'Perot gave us Clinton'. Actually your Dad gave us Perot.

GWB has to hold onto Ohio, Indiana and Florida. That's it. Due to reapportionment he can afford to lose New Hampshire and Nevada and still end up in a tie at 269 providing he wins all the other states that he won in 2000. Most of those states he won by double digits so I am not too worried about his chances. He can spend the vast majority of his time campaigning in those three states-and maybe trying to pick off states like Oregon, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Iowa and Pennsylvania. The Dems have and uphill fight ahead of them and they know it. I don't see a single candidate among the current bunch who is up to the task.

It's important to look at change in unemployment. Some states have historically higher unemployment (Washington). Some have historically lower (Minnesota). States where jobs are coming back (being created) quickly, good. States where they're not, bad.
Jeb has done SO much for his brother by governing Florida like he has, with the economy booming and all. I don't think it'll be a tossup state at this point. I see Arkansas and Louisiana as on par with or easier targets than Florida for the Democrats, which is awesome.

GWB has to hold onto Ohio, Indiana and Florida. That's it. Indiana is safe. Ohio could be more of a problem (only if the election's close, of course). Arizona and Nevada, too. But you're right, Bush gets to poach the left coast, southwest, and the whole Midwest across to Pennsylvania and West Virginia as the Rat nominee runs hither and thither sticking his finger in the dyke.
