Cartoon Raises a Stink
Washinton Post ^ | Friday, November 21, 2003 | Johnny Hart

Posted on 11/21/2003 6:34:31 AM PST by livesbygrace

Did Johnny Hart -- the beloved creator of "B.C." and one of the most widely read cartoonists on Earth -- sneak a vulgar defamation of Islam into the comics pages last week? The question was raised yesterday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Washington-based civil rights group, in an e-mail to its membership.

Hart and his syndicate say no -- that a simple, straightforward joke is being misconstrued. That may well be true, but the 73-year-old cartoonist's history of evangelizing his Christian beliefs through his comic cavemen have left many people doubtful.

The cartoon, which appeared Nov. 10 in more than 1,200 newspapers worldwide -- including The Washington Post -- shows a caveman entering an outhouse at night, and then saying, from inside, "Is it just me, or does it stink in here?"

The first public questioning of this cartoon arose in a washingtonpost.com chat Tuesday, when a reader noted that the cartoon seemed to make no sense, except metaphorically. The reader noted that the cartoon contained six crescent moons -- three in the sky, and three on the outhouse door -- and wondered if this might have been a veiled slur on the world's 1 billion practicing Muslims.

Uhh... the only point that I was making in posting various moon deities is that the moon is not only the symbol of what is worhipped by mohommedans. How dare they think that they own that symbol.

I've seen some claims by Islamists (I think on AskTheImam) that The United States was created by allah for the muslims and that it is inhabited by the infidels. This is why some muslims are permitted to come to the "wicked west" to convert the infidels.

They worship a meteor in Mecca. They protest any physical representation of, the admittedly human/not God, Mohommed. Claiming to own the "moon" doesn't surprise me.

Oh that's right - no Islamic person has any idea where Saddam Hussein or OBL are hiding out - they are probably somewhere being protected by the Mossad

I watching FNC one day and saw one of the Iraqis admit that they hate addam bu tsaid it is also customary to help hide him if he asks for help. Those people are way too strict in their culture.

Your post implies the Japs were innocents in WWII. I think they made the same mistake the radical Islamists have made - pushed the wrong guy too far - and got exactly what they deserved - maybe a bit less.

You'd think if those people can be strict enough in their customs to aid their own enemy, they would understand that GITMO is a much more luxurious jail compared to thier own.

Customary to hide anyone who comes looking for help in Afghanistan, so I think we should have a few Americans ask for shelter in various areas and just wait. :-)

Because for an increasing number of people, their validation lies in their self-proclaimed moral and spiritual superiority, which they must demonstrate by making it their life's work to be offended - often when there is no offense intended, overt or otherwise.
Apololgies for the rambling paragraphing.

So what's the meaning of the cartoon then?

A cutout star or moon in the door of an outhouse means it's for men or women, respectively. This is equivalent to the modern stick-figure on the bathroom door, because back when chicksales were common literacy was not.

Believe it or not, I tend to agree with the linguist who said it was most likely an unconscious jab at Islam. The symbols are strong, even if they are common to Hart's cartoons. I think it was something that he needed to get out of his system, and his Christian good nature doesn't allow him to be more obvious with an attack, so his inner terrorist took over and did the dirty work for him.

And I say, bravo.

I wonder what they put on their outhouses?

I think you will appreciate this: Many years ago I worked for a small charter airline that each year had a contract to fly Muslim pilgrims from Mecca for Medina for the Hadj. We needed a better ops shack (shack is indeed the right term) so a 'new' one was put up some distance from the old one. Unfortunately, the workers refused to go and work at the new building because there weren't any 'facilities' at the new one. By 'facilities' they were referring to the large, unbelievably smelly pile of you-know-what right out in the open where they squatted whenever they needed to. Not only did they not even have 'outhouses' they didn't have the hygenic sense to know how incredibly disease-ridden a huge pile of crap can be. Complete morons then and now...
