Wells College Prof: Republicans Should be Forcibly Lobotomized (Left-wing Campus Loony Alert)

As reported in Front Page Magazine, http://frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=10699, the Wells College Republicans yesterday published a study showing that Dems outnumber Republicans on the social sciences/humanities faculties by a ratio of 92%/8%.

In response, a Wells prof sent a campus-wide email calling Republicans "stupid" and calling for Republicans to be forcibly lobotomized. See press release below from the Wells Republicans.

Wells College Professor: Republicans Should be Forcibly Lobotomized
Prof Labels Republicans “Stupid”

College Republicans: “A Conservative Prof Saying Similar Thing would be Gone”

AURORA, N.Y. (Nov. 7)--Responding to a study showing a gross imbalance of Democrats over Republicans on the faculty of Wells College, located in Aurora, NY, a Wells professor distributed a campus-wide email calling for Republicans to be forcibly lobotomized and labeling Republicans “stupid.”

On Thursday, November 6th, the Wells Republicans issued a press release describing the study they had conducted of the political party registrations of the members of the social sciences and humanities faculties at the college. The study revealed that members of parties of the left (Democrats, Greens, Working Families) outnumbered members of parties of the right (Republicans and Conservatives) by a ratio of 92%/8%. The online FrontPage Magazine promptly picked up the story. See article: http://frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=10699

Responding to the press release and study, Wells Professor Tom Vawter sent an email to all members of the Wells community calling Republicans “stupid.” He closed his email with this quote: “’Lobotomies for Republicans: It's not just a good idea; it’s the Law!’ --Yellow Dog.”

Wells Republican Chairman Kristy Lee Hochenberger, a junior from Syracuse, NY, responded to Vawter’s comments: “We are outraged by Professor Vawter’s comments. Calling Republicans “stupid” is wrong and misguided. Calling for all Republicans to be forcibly lobotomized is frightening,” said Hochenberger.

“A conservative professor saying a similar thing would be gone. If a professor made an analogous comment in response to a press release from a liberal women’s group, he would be out of a job by sundown. Cries of ‘hate crime,’ ‘threats of violence’ and ‘misogyny’ would echo through the land. Feminist and liberal leaders would be flying into Aurora from around the country to support the beleaguered students and call for the punishment of the professor. The national media would focus on the story.”

Added Hochenberger: “In yesterday’s press release, we cited the experience of a number of Wells students who are reluctant to express their Republican or conservative views, given the intimidating atmosphere that some of the liberal professors on the faculty have created. Prof. Vawter has unwittingly given a perfect illustration of the kind of intolerant, intimidating attitudes that the Republican students described in yesterday’s press release.”

Concluded Hochenberger: “We call on the Wells College administration, and in particular Wells College President Lisa Marsh Ryerson, to condemn Prof. Vawter’s intemperate language and to take measures to ensure that Republicans at Wells will be free to express themselves without fear of this kind of hateful and threatening response.”

"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."

If anyone chooses to email the Wells president, I would respectfully encourage them to be civil.

The Wells Republicans have made progress on campus by remaining polite, though energetic, and would not want to be giving the administration or others grounds to criticize them in the same way that this professor has opened himself up to criticism.

Let me get this straight...the same guys who's recommending labotomies was involved in something called Project Kaleidoscope???

"Professors BAILEY, TOM VAWTER, AND NIAMH O’LEARY, along with DEAN HALL, participated in the Project Kaleidoscope workshop on "Environmental Studies: Issues for New and Expanding Programs," at Brown University, June 18-20 [2000]."

Isn't it incredible, in a way, that there really is nothing all that surprising about what this liberal prof dared to say?

Can you imagine what would happen to a conservative prof who sent a similar email to everyone on the campus of an all-women's college calling for the same treatment to be given to feminists, or pro-choicers?

Your exactly right. I really do not even need to respond, just letting you know I read the story. I agree with your estimation.

I heard it like this:

"I'd prefer a bottle in front of me to a prefrontal lobotomy."

I see. A quick Google search yields this link describing Project Kaleidoscope, a national alliance promoting undergrad study of math and science: http://www.pkal.org/

Prof. Vawter is sure doing a great job of promotion, calling half his students stupid, and threatening them with lobotomies. Sure would make me want to enroll in his class.

It appears the e-mail naming conventions are first initial and full last name. That would make the idiots e-mail address: tvawter@wells.edu.

Republicans are smart, very smart, not to study this crap.

Have at the guy, but again I would strongly encourage FReepers to be civil. Let's not make the same mistake he did. He would seize on the first over-the-top email he receives to say to the press "see, the other side does exactly the same thing." Please everyone, remain polite.

Of course they want Republicans lobotomized, then they would be Democrats!

LOL, well said.
