Gingrich: Bush Should Stonewall Corrupt Senate Probers

President Bush should stop cooperating with Senate Intelligence Committee probers until the person who authored a memo urging Democrats to use committee resources for corrupt partisan purposes is fired, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said Wednesday.

"This is a real crisis of whether or not the Congress can perform honest, non-partisan, intelligence oversight aimed at protecting the nation," Gingrich told radio host Sean Hannity.

"I don't see how the White House can cooperate with an intelligence committee which has this level of partisanship," he added. "[What the memo suggests doing] violates every rule that we've had for managing the intelligence system for the last two generations."

Gingrigh called on ranking Senate Intelligence Committee Democrat Jay Rockefeller to step down.

"The only honorable thing Sen. Rockefeller could do now would be to resign to re-establish the integrity of the committee," he urged, "If he stays on the committee, he taints the committee permanently with being just a partisan brawl."

Read the memo that details the Democrats' plan to use the information gathered by the Senate Intelligence Committee to drive President Bush from office.

Nice post. Good to hear him speak out on this.

I posted a thread "Rockefeller Must Resign" today, and got a number of people to email the so-called senator...

His email address, should you want to do the same, is

senator@rockefeller.senate.gov

Have at it!

I would hope he will handle the situation the way he knows is best. Now is not the time for the ugly "no mandate" ghost to rear it's ugly head. He HAS a mandate. We GAVE him one.

"The only honorable thing Sen. Rockefeller could do now would be to resign to re-establish the integrity of the committee," he urged...

This presupposes that Jay has some integrity.

Wrong.

Not a bad idea, but Gingrich misses the larger picture. Every last bit of intelligence shared with any congressional committee will be broadcast to our enemies 24/7.

I'd go one further. President Bush should publicly state the WH will not cooperate with the committee until those things are done

The White House should stonewall until both Rockerfeller and Roberts are replaced. Roberts should be made to understand that bipartisanship does not mean to cooperate with the Democrats to undermine your own party's President!

I agree with Newt (and miss his tough presence in the Congress, BTW).

President Bush should also require that all members and staff of committees receiving secret intelligence pass security checks and receive appropriate clearances. Which includes signing death and damnation forms.

They won't, as this would give the Executive Branch control of Legislative Branch affairs. Tough. Intelligence in wartime is an Executive affair. So Bush should then deny Congress (as a body, not selected individual Representatives and Senators) access to secret intelligence, and additionally not comply with some covert activities disclosure statute whose name escapes me.

The Democrats are no longer a loyal opposition. Statutes founded on the assumption that there is one should not be obeyed in wartime. Let the Democrats take that issue to the people. They'll lose.

IIRC, Patrick "Leaky" Leahy lost his seat on this committee for doing something very similar to what this memo suggests - releasing classified data for political purposes. He needs company at the bottom of the cesspool.
