If you have something that qualifies as BREAKING NEWS or FRONT PAGE NEWS, please post it on a separate thread in that category in order to give it maximum exposure and then post a link to the article/thread here so that it will be included in the next update of links. Also, if you post links to articles from original sources and there is also a thread on FR, please link to the FR thread. Many original links become corrupt over time and we want to be able to access the information at will.

There's got to be a whole lot of new techniques that weren't around in 1991.
And I bet Michael Schiavo keeps up with the news of advances in that field!

And that we need legislatures to enact new laws that only allow SIGNED living wills to claim preference to death.

And what good would such a law have done if Michael Schiavo had given Judge Greer a "living will" whose handwriting and signature happened to bear a striking resemblence to his own?

With good judges on the bench, the existing law would provide adequate protection. With bad judges on the bench, no law can provide adequate protection.

When I was on hospice, for my husband's brain cancer (and the rule is a person must be DECLARED by their doctor terminal within 6 months to qualify for help), I battled them a lot oover the wristband issue, but held out and won.
They wanted him to wear a green plastic DNR wristband, in case someone inadvertantly called an ambulance, so that they could "save" that possible cost!!!!!!!!
I refused, after being married 39 years, (knew him well enough)didn't feel that he would like to wear this reminder that he is dying every day until he did, and also felt insulted that they mistrusted me in my judgement of calling an ambulance!!!!!
(Which, I never did, but would not have hesiteted if he had been suffering.!!!!!)

A friend of mine was a home helper, her client, an elderly lady on hospice, fell down and broke her hip, while my friend was there helping her.
My friend called an ambulance, this lady was in EXTREME pain, and the hospice chewed her out, for calling them. Shame to waste the money, doncha know.
They instruct you to ONLY call them for emergency, but when I called them on Christmas EVe day, it was THE NEXT DAY, CHRISTMAS, BEFORE ANYONE CAME OUT!!! Overnight, too.
It was not an emergency, tho, or I would have called an ambulance, he died the next day, and did need some help, oxygen, when I called for help.
I was too distraught at that time to complain,(to hospice) tho, was blessed had lots of family there to help.Altho, after, when they sent a form asking for care opinion, I GAVE IT TO THEM, they never called me back, so probably didn't like my opinion.The only reason I kept with them is that I needed the link to the doc, for many, many med changes.
Sorry to be long-winded, just thougght you would like to be aware of things you may face as volunteer, bless you, tho, you can keep your own opinions, tho, and not fall for thier policies of money issues!!!!
Sounds like you are a good person, and could be very valuable to dying patients, outside of the money issue.

I think some still adhere to their original purpose. Investigation of the hospice in which you will volunteer would be advised.

Graymatter has it in a nutshell. It was Jim Pinkerton that said M. Schiavo is like a low-grade Scott Peterson. Neal Gabler said press has politicized the issue rather than looking at the facts, rather than look at the medical aspects and look at the legal aspects. Cal Thomas at least knew about the girlfriend. IMO, Jane was the most infuriating.

I agree! It is a very unselfish, loving thing to do. What about having a thread here for legal purposes of what Freeper's directives are here as a backup? Is that tasteless or too bizarre?

Tasteless or bizarre is what's happening to Terri. Your idea isn't. I think it is a good suggestion that would be informative and useful to many.

There are different methods that can be employed to give instructions. Living will and advance directive are two that I know about. I need to do more research about options because our directives were done a long time ago, before such detailed information was available about Terri. All my reading here has been dedicated to learning of the pitfalls of not having something in writing and the people & organizations that will take advantage of you in that event.

Since individual desires and needs are so diverse, even on this forum, it would probably be best to begin a thread with all the various options that are available and have posters comment from there.

The culture-of-death people will argue that Terri's Law, unlike this law, is really directed at one case. But I think there are strong analogies.

This is the first time i have read them, and at the bottom left the nursing staff notes: That terri will occasionally tell the nursing staff to "stop" during procedures!!!

Very true, I wonder if FL voters even know about the corruption of their judiciary. For many years they have NOT known that Robert Graham is a liberal though he poses as "moderate" in tone. I don't know of a single liberal measure that Robert Graham has ever opposed.

Renter's insurance covers one's personal belongings. The owner of the house/apartment has to get homeowner's insurance to cover the building, accidents in the building, fire, etc.

Thanks for your story - I am very interested in others' experiences with Hospices. I took care of my elderly mother for 5 months while she was on home Hospice care, I had very few complaints - most of the nurses were nice (not all) and the nurse's aids were *really* nice. But their policy of drugging patients to the max with psychactive drugs I found repellent. After a while, my mother was on a couple of anti-depressents, pain pills which actually she rarely took as she felt very little pain, sleeping pills, an anti-anxiety drug, and there may have been more. It helped to cloud my poor mother's mind even more - and since she had been a life long alcoholic, it was sad. I wasn't in control of the situation, the rest of my family was, and they are all anti-religion (except for me) so it was a tense situation. But somehow we all managed to get 'er done!

I just read the statement on your website concerning Terri Schiavo. I am well aware that there was a GAL appointed for Terri who did not believe the statements made by Michael and his relatives that Terri would not want to be on life support (not exact quote but that is not the issue) and George Felos convinced Judge Greer to dismiss him because of 'bias'. I am a resident of Florida and also well aware of the financial problems surrounding the hospice where Terri has been kept for the past few years. Hospices are supposed to be for terminally ill persons not disabled women who stay for years. Who convinced who that hospice was the appropriate place for Terri.? Who signed the paperwork allowing her to be admitted there? Why? I have made it a point to educate myself concerning this case because the news media has done such a pitiful job. I think disabled and elderly groups are beginning to see the big picture here as evidenced by their speaking out for Terri and not for the Judge Greer's decision. Food and water are the basics which keep all of us alive, a manatee or alligator fares better in the state of FL than a disabled woman. If one of these animals or a dog were to have its food and water withheld someone would be in jail for animal cruelty! It's not hard to see the clever tactics employed by those who are supportive of assisted suicide and how they have played on words to appeal to the public by using phrases such as 'right to die' and 'assistance in dying' in so called 'palliative care' organizations. It also appears that Mary Labyak is playing a big part in this movement. There are thousands of people who choose to research for themselves instead of being spoon fed by the media who can't understand how the laws concerning hospices were circumvented by admitting a disabled woman who was in no way terminal. But as it goes in the south sometimes 'good ole boy' connections can do a lot for you.
I can tell you this much, from what I have learned about the hospice where Terri Schiavo has been under sensory deprivation by her so called husband I will never choose hospice care for myself or any loved one if I am placed in the position to make that choice. It is easy enough to research that death by dehdration/starvation is painful and slow contrary to the statements made by Michael Schiavo on Larry King Live and I will not ever put myself or any loved one in any institution which would deprive me of food and water.
