"Lots of guys here read novels," he wrote his father. "A lot of them spend time sitting in safe houses where they have time to read. I've heard mention of a book exchange, where people could drop off and pick up books. I'm getting a bookcase to put in our front 'lobby,' and now we will need some books.
"I will have room for up to about 200 novels or so, and would like to get a bunch of books to start them. Suppose they don't all have to be novels, as long as it's interesting reading. Classics are fine, as these guys read just about anything they can get their hands on."
So what do you say, Niagara? Let's get these people some books. Not only are they being shot at on our behalf, but it's 120 degrees over there and Iraq is notoriously devoid of nightlife.
It's not very expensive. Just put your book in an envelope and send it to:
CPT David Spencer
Task Force 1-63 Armor

In a post at a anti War/Pro Dems website they are asking their readers to send to our troops books for their reading pleasure. They have suggested books by Michael Moore and Al Franken.
They also would have send Mein Kampf to the troops after Normandy.
Let's do what we can to send them some worthwhile reading material!
I am starting with: 'Mere Christianity' by C. S. Lewis
I would also suggest a short note of support!

Correction follows:
"They also would have sent Mein Kampf to the troops after Normandy."

A signed copy of my recently published SF/Fantasy novel,
Way of the Wolf, is on the way. Along with a note of appreciation.
Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for posting this. Great suggestion. I know some who would like beginner dance lessons in DVDs (they can't play tapes). But I haven't found any in stores.

I have "Slander" "Let Freedom Ring" and O'Reilly's book. Do you think they will be needed or will these just be repeats?

Do you think they will be needed or will these just be repeats? And what would be wrong with repeats?
By all means the more of those the better (IMHO)!!
However, I would suggest paperbacks only to save space and weight.

Attention please! Please visit the Books for Soldiers web site before sending books. There are MANY troops who have requested books, not just the one mentioned in this thread. Click "Enter Board" to find names and addresses of troops and the books/DVDs/etc they requested.
Also, this site has started Operation Forgotten Soldier - a way for citizens to support those troops who are getting no mail or care packages from home.

Acquasanta Books is proud to support our troops, and we will forward five (5) quality novels to the address you suggested.

I'm putting together a box of books, Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta thrillers and some others.
To: Michael.SF.
Well I have the hardcovers but I think I will start by sending those!
Then I'll check the booksales at the library and just get paperbacks.

Well hello you ol' jarhead! I'm an ol' zoomie gal. ;-) hahahahaha
Nice to meet you. Thanks for calling in the cavalry!
I've been checking out the Books for Soldiers site for awhile since I learned about it from one of Ragtime Cowgirl's posts.
Even if you don't send a book or package, the troops love getting mail - especially those who don't get anything from home. That breaks my heart!
I have some cards filled with some cartoons, news clippings and printouts of FR threads of Support Our Troops rallies ready to mail today to several deployed soldiers. I think it's important that they have something positive to counter all the negative news they hear. And, it's a great opportunity to let them know about FreeRepublic!
Thanks for your post and pings! Jen

Ahhh, my favorite part of the U.S. Air Force - its women! :-)
That, and the SR-71.
Had an Air Force girlfriend when stationed out in California at a joint command. It was kind of a joke that each male Marine be issued an Air Force companion.
I agree that our troops are doing great work, and our mail can go a long way to keeping their morale and comfort up!
