put me on the list ...

I've had a lot of success with lowcarb. I lost 50 lb on Adkins then switched to So. Beach for the variety -- I believe.

I'm not familiar with the South Beach diet. How does it differ from Adkins?

Personally, I think the Am Diabetes Assn people will burn in hell for telling diabetics to eat baked potatoes and that 'a carb is a carb.

Not the first time I have heard that.. Good for you, and what a wonderful success in knocking off the meds just because you bucked the system.. Keep in close touch with your Dr. as you know, thank heaven he/or she lives in the 21st century with the rest of us.. You are a real man, I know one when I meet one.. :o)

Carlo, please help. I am having cravings for paella and for lemon meringue pie. I must be strong. The carbs cannot win. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Go to this link to my April recipes.. Make the hotest sauce you can eat over steamed Cauliflower Florets.. That will change the subject quick.. Always eat something really spicy when you are getting weak because it activates your senses.. LOL It always works.. I'll have another great recipe in a minute that follows that system.

South Beach is low carb, but not low fat ----rather, it is 'good' fat. The carbs, which are more lenient in the SBD, are considered 'good' carbs. It is not a take-off of the Atkins. Also, it is not a 'gimmick' diet. Its principles are sound.

It is guided by the Glycemic Index, a concept which measures food which elevate your blood sugar.

The diet encourages protein snacking to keep the blood sugar levels up, so as to ward off hunger.

I've been on it for almost 4 months and have lost 20 pounds. Not much, but it has been a steady loss, and I can say that I have not been hungry since day 1!

Forget the hype about the big initial weight loss. That happens to some, but not to most. The diet also gives you guidance on how to get back on track, when you stray. Its founder, a cardiologist, knows we are human (as he is) and often cheat (as he has), but you can get back in line with very little effort.

I hate to say the word 'diet' because I really don't feel that I am on one.

I'm not an expert on the SBD, but its principle is simple and the diet is easy to follow. All the recipes that Carlo has posted here can be adapted, easily, to the SBD guidelines.

Got it?

You'll want to tattoo this baby to your Ascot.. Yehaaaaaaaaaa!!

1) Combine into food processor, tomatoes, garlic, bell peppers, onion, hot pepper(s), and chopped into a relish.
2) Place large, heavy bottomed pot on med. heat. Add oil. Add chopped vegetables. Stir and simmer for 45 mins.
3) Mix in salt, cilantro, lime, (secret ingredient), and sugar. Simmer additional 15 mins, covered.

Thank you so much for cleaning up Isle 5 of my shooting from the hip on South Beach.. It clearly is much more that a knock-off and if I was thinking I would have made that point much clearer. My point was in saying it, it was ATKINS that I believe broke the mold on proteins. :)

Atkins sure did break the mold!!

Dr. Agatston knew and admired Dr. Atkin for fighting conventional wisdom successfully. Dr. A has a good chapter on the history of popular diets, and all the stupid mistakes that were made. (stupid is my word)He mentions how Dr. Atkins shocked all by doing the exact opposite of the low-fat gospel. Especially when it seemed to work better than the AHA low fat, high carb diet. LOL! He shook up the medical and nutritional establishments. Sounds good to me!! And you know --- what could the establishment say? Dr. Atkins wasn't a quack! He was a successful MD. himself. Wasn't it great when they had to eat crow and admit that Atkins was on to something!!

I hope the Bakery was in aisle 5! It needs shooting up! HeeHee!

Dana Carpenter has a couple really good low carb books. I have both the "500 low card recipes" and the new "15 minute low carb recipes". Good stuff. I made a butter pecan cheese cake for guests a few weeks ago and they would have never guessed that it had less then 9 gms of carbs per wedge.

check out her web site http://www.holdthetoast.com/ (clever name, huh?)

Sounds easy enough in theory, but putting it into practice is another matter. Playing sports with the meat and potatoes tends to jam up the buttons on the remote. I'm totally in the dark when it comes to that other stuff! <:o)
