"The national party has looked at New York and concluded the state party is not getting it done, that they won't have a strong and credible candidate," confided a powerful Republican with strong New York and Washington ties.

I can't bear to think of Chucky for another six years. I hope the National Republicans at least make a fight out of it. Staging the convention in NYC with no serious opposition would be a travesty.

good screen name...I thought Rudy would run, seeing as the convention...this could all be disinformation. I think Rudy will be campaigning hard in '04, the only question is it all over the country, or is it only in NY against Schumer.

Perhaps Republicans are saving their strongest senate candidate for 2006 when Hillary runs for reelection. If I had to choose between knocking off Schumer or Clinton, I would prefer to knock off Clinton. Schumer could not possibly be a serious candidate at the national level while Clinton is a very likely candidate for president in 2008.

I really don't think Giuliani has a snowball's chance in hell of winning the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. I do think, however that he would be much better than either Schumer or Clinton representing New York in the Senate.

I was skeptical, too, until Paul Weyrich said that enough social conservatives would allow Giuliani--and only Giuliani--the nomination while holding pro-choice views.

I am skeptical that Hillary will run for re-election after W. wins next year. I think she only has intentions of using NY for higher office and will use 2007 to travel across the country.

I agree, Rudy Giluiani has no chance of the '08 nod, Jeb will get the nod in '08. Bloomberg should run against Schummer and Pataki should go for Clinton's seat in 06. Clinton will be easier to beat because Republicans all over the nation will finance her GOP opponent being that she is a potential 08 Presidential candidate. Pataki can finish his term as Governor and run for Senator in 06 as a 3 term Governor, a Republican who won 3 times in NY, he would be a very good candidate.

First no direct quote by Weyrich. Second, this sounds like maybe Rudy for VP with those views, not Pres. Finally, isn't Slate a left-wing magazine?

Hillary will run in 06, she doesnt have to travel the country as so to say Howard Dean or Bob Graham, she can stay in the Senate and run.
