Pelosi, Schiff defend impeachment probe, lack of formal floor vote

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff expressed confidence in Democrats' ongoing impeachment inquiry and efforts to obtain records and testimony from the Trump administration in court, while defending their inquiry from Republican criticism.

Pelosi defended their timeline, without providing any new updates on Tuesday, and dismissed questions about Republican calls for a formal floor vote.

"I'm not concerned about anything," she said. Republicans "can't defend the president so they're going to process."

The “impeachment probe” is a lie, like everything else Democrats do or say. They have no legal authority to investigate anything other than what’s publicly known.

“can’t defend the president...”

...can’t defend very well when you’re blindfolded and gagged, can you?

“We’ll get a more Democratic result by not voting on it.”

I’m certainly no constitutional scholar, but doesn’t it seem that by following this extra-constitutional process, the House is running the risk of the Senate doing the same?

What they are doing it extra-constitutional because the Constitution dictates no fixed process for impeachment investigations or trials. The House is free to set it’s own rules and procedures and can impeach over the way a President combs his hair if they want to (and it might just come to that). Assuming they fiddle around and stink up the joint as long as Nancy deems fit and then they pass articles of impeachment, what does the Senate have to do?

My reading says “the Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments” and that a 2/3 majority is required, but that’s it. So the Senate is equally free to adopt extra-constitutional rules and procedures of it’s own, and since it’s a trial they can allow the President as much access to information, discovery, call witnesses, etc as they want. The point is, they could easily dismiss it in an hour, or drag it out for months, and put the nation in gridlock, meanwhile Trump remains President, free to make Scotus and other judicial appointments, issue EOs, and all the rest.

Simply keep it going for 13 months and get your asses spanked in Nov 2020. HAHA

Well, Nacy, Schitt and Co. are not following the Constitution which gives impeachment power to the House of Repesentatives entire, not just one “party.” So what the Dems are doing so far is unconstitutional.

Article One of the Constitution is very clear in its plain meaning:

“The House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment. “

I hope they do go to court to enforce their kangaroo court subpoenas. It would likely go all the way to the Supreme Court after Pelosi et.al judge shop to take the matter before a Clinton or Obama appointed judge.

Without including the entire House of Representatives with all proceedings observing due process, its just as Republican Representatives say, a secretive “ Star Chamber” of scurrilous self serving partisan propaganda.

In short this is a violation of the Civil Rights of the President under color of law.

Donald Trump is going to beat the Dems like a drum in Nov. 2020. America is behind him , supporting him in this illegal activity foisted upon the People.I hope they just keep doubling down on their Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Well, they certainly can’t defend the president when you don’t allow them to vote NO on an impeachment inquiry, you don’t allow them to call witnesses in the hearings, you don’t allow them to know the NAMES of key witnesses, and you refuse to let them even come into some of the depositions.

All the while claiming it is for secrecy, but leaking anything that helps their cause.

Exactly what I was thinking. Defend against what?

But this is Pelosi who thought Schiff’s ‘parody’ was reality.

We never wanted a vote. We just wanted to put doubts about Trump in the minds of low information voters.

The problem is, at least in the past the courts have refused to get involved with impeachment procedures, saying that the constitution leaves it up to the House and Senate to define and tosses it to them.

If that continues to be the case, Nancy is on firm ground, she’s free to ignore precedent and set all the kangaroo court processes she wants and no one can stop her. At least I for one don’t feel highly confident that the current Supreme Court can be counted on.

I see what you say, but by then the appeal process will bring us to November 2020.

And the electorate will make the decision if SCOTUS buckles.

The problem is that they’re not “in court.” This is basically like a bill of attainder, that is, creating the crime and the process specifically to nail a political enemy. They are not formalizing anything because then it could be challenged.

If the Senate is smart they will make the trial about verifying the President’s accusations against the Bidens and the Democrats.

That’s why the House won’t impeach.

Prior to the Ukraine call, and all this info on Hunter Biden...I suspect that they were going the normal route, would have voted to start the impeachment probe, and gathered around a formal process.

But after the Hunter Biden business came out...they have to huddle around and make up a monkey-court system...to protect Joe Biden. As the monkey-court started, then they had to shuffle around and protect Shifty, the Shifty-team, and this whistleblower.

In the past week, I’ve seen a couple of instances where reporters (normally anti-Trump) are now asking questions of Shifty and there’s doubt brewing on the whole monkey-court process.

Maybe it’s just me, but you take this 3rd-world process...toss in the spiraling Democratic Debates...a severely weakened Joe Biden in the public eye....a crippled-up CNN, and you have probably the worst showing for the 2020 President election for the Democrats in forty years.
