Dem infighting on race spills into 2020 presidential contest

The highly public, racially charged rift between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a clutch of freshmen congresswomen led by Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez has spilled into the 2020 Democratic presidential contest. The intramural conflict is threatening to overshadow President Donald Trump's history of race-baiting and xenophobia.

Seizing an opportunity to rile his opponents, Trump on Friday offered a finger-wagging rebuke to Ocasio-Cortez and a defense of Pelosi. "She is not a racist," he said of the speaker, who rarely hides her contempt for the president and certainly was not seeking his support.

While many Democrats had hoped to use the president's history on race against him, the party's 2020 hopefuls are finding they first need to reconcile the matter internally.

We know that AOC can dance, so the fight scenes should be pretty good.

Rats will all come together by General Election. Remember, power is more important than policy to them.

Nanzi went unusually ballistic over remarks belittling her made by AOC's smart*** COS Saikat Chakrabarti.

His Twitter response to the dust-up: “All these articles want to claim what a legislative mastermind Pelosi is, but I'm seeing way more strategic smarts from freshman members like @AOC, @IlhanMN , @RashidaTlai and @AyannaPressley. Pelosi is just mad that she got outmaneuvered (again) by Republicans,” Chakrabarti tweeted.

Pelosi studied coolness erupted as she was walking past reporters to say: “by the way, our caucus is very upset about some of the comments that have come from some of the staff of …”

Pelosi stopped short of saying Ocasio-Cortez, adding, “Perhaps you are not aware of what is going on?”

Just exactly what is the Presidents “history on race”?

Nobody ever seems to point out anything he’s said or done that’s disparaging to blacks

npr.org reported the Pelosi/AOC fight escalated when her chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti,
compared moderate Democrats to segregationists in a tweet that has since been deleted.

Chakrabarti 's tweet suggested two moderate groups, the Blue Dogs and the New Democrats, should be called New Southern Democrats (Democrats who once supported segregation). Chakrabarti added, "They certainly seem hell bent to do to black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did [in] the 40s." Chakrabarti continued to argue on Twitter that the moderate wing may not be racist but was still backing policies that could harm communities of color.

Chakrabarti's comments enraged moderates and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., the vice chair of the moderate New Democrat Coalition and a member of the CBC, released a statement condemning the remarks. "To even insinuate that I, or any other member of the New Dems, would promote policies that are racist and hateful or ones that would negatively impact communities of color is deeply offensive and couldn't be further from the truth," Sewell said.

The Chakrabarti/AOC controversy was so widespread that Pelosi addressed the issue directly Wednesday in a weekly closed-door meeting for all House Democrats. She called on members to have "some level of respect and sensitivity" to the "individual experience" that each member brings to Congress, according to a transcript of her remarks provided by a source in the room.

These are the kind of articles that I enjoy, because as much as they hate Trump - and don’t even attempt to be unbiased, they’re forced to report on Democrat problems, which we all know they hate doing.

Several examples and analysis from the article:

“The intramural conflict is threatening to overshadow President Donald Trump’s history of race-baiting and xenophobia.”
“While many Democrats had hoped to use the president’s history on race against him”

These claims are unsupported in the article, their just simply put out there.

“Former Vice President Joe Biden cited Trump’s tacit support for white supremacists”

Trump has been clear that wants nothing to do with that very small bunch of people, and his ‘tacit support’ consisted of stating that some people are still proud of American history, even the less pretty parts - still a far cry from being racists or ‘supremacists’.

“The fight within the party could limit the efforts to highlight Trump’s hardline rhetoric and policies on race and immigration.”

Rhetoric maybe, but I don’t think his policies are any worse than Obama’s...of course the difference being that the courts let Obama do what he considered necessary.

“Trump famously called Mexican immigrants rapists and murders in his campaign announcement speech.”

Maybe he watched a different version of the speech. He called SOME of the immigrants bad people, and he was referring to some of the Illegal ones. I have no doubt, given Trump’s background in construction, that he knows that most immigrants, legal or otherwise (at least until recently), are decent, hard-working people. But look at it from south of the border, what better way to get rid of their trash than to send them up here.

“He has since promoted social media posts from white nationalists.”

As if that makes Trump guilty of something...and I’m sure that NEVER happens on the Left, nope, never.

“And he said there were “very fine people” on both sides of a white supremacy rally in Virginia last summer that left one protester dead.”

That’s just stating a fact. There are FAR MORE PEOPLE who come to these rallies either to show their support of America (and nothing more), or simply to see what’s going on. I was one them at college at ESU - got whacked by a cop in riot gear. Like 99% of the people there, we wanted to see what real live Nazis looked like before they took over the country. Wound up being about 8 high school kids wearing tee shirts from a local FM radio station.

“The friction has forced the party’s presidential candidates to weigh in. And so far, no one wants to pick sides.”

There actually is something useful in this article, and this is the KEY TAKEAWAY.

While we ‘laugh’ at her, the fact is that the Democrats simply CANNOT CONTROL HER, and they are scared to death of her - read the quotes in the article. Even Trump, given his power as president, never had a shortage of Republicans openly attacking him. With AOC, it’s all ‘off-the-record’, no one will say a thing on the record.

Why does she elicit this level of ABJECT FEAR in other Democrats? Very simple - two reasons:

1) Those who want to get re-elected know that she will get a clone of hers to primary them, and probably knock them out.

2) Those who want to become President know they can only win the primaries with her on their side, or at at least without her attacking them.

“Liberal activist Adam Green, a Warren ally, said that with the exception of the Democratic Party’s eventual presidential nominee, no Democrat will command more attention in national politics in 2020 than Ocasio-Cortez.”

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT - as we see power over the rest of the party just by reading this article.
