Trump's North Korean gambit is already a political win
CNN Politics ^ | July 1, 2019 | Stephen Collinson

Donald Trump's walk into North Korea can best be explained through the lens of the 2020 election.

If history is to remember one of the most audacious photo ops in American diplomacy as anything more than a stunt, the President must now produce breakthroughs from his friendship with the brutal dictator Kim Jong Un.

Yet even if that progress is slow to emerge, Trump can still chalk up a valuable political win that will underscore how his foreign policy is often directed by his electoral priorities.

He can use his singular televised moment to bolster his claims to be a statesman and a peacemaker. And it's not just about winning the Nobel Prize that the President believes he deserves for forging an opening with one of the most despotic regimes in modern history.

Trump also has a vital political interest in keeping alive the idea that he personally headed off war with North Korea and that historic progress is possible as he runs for reelection.

His meeting with Kim is a centerpiece of the "peace and prosperity" platform on which he plans to anchor his bid for a second term and to use to rise above his Democratic rivals.

Donald Trump will win the Nobel Peace prize when I star in the John Holmes story....

Only thing is, Trump deserves it. Trump is making a personal, human overture. People like Kim Jong Un hold all the cards. There are no checks and balances. If he is cajoled into thinking us of as human beings, not simply as nameless, faceless enemies, he may be less likely to do something idiotic. It is a charm offensive aimed at someone who may just be receptive to it. If that isn't the essence of peace, than I don't know what is.

The people of the DUmpster will howl at this one, but I had a dream last night where I ran into Ronald Reagan.
I said ‘you are my favorite president!’ but then I asked him ‘Did you ever walk into east germany via the brandenburg gate?’

No, it can't! President Trump is trying to bring about real change with regard to North Korea and I hope he succeeds, which is about the last thing CNN wants.

He didn’t have to.

The people he wanted to free ARE free.

Would it have been better for him to be the first president to walk somewhere or for HUNDREDS of millions to be freed?

A walk on the NK side was GREAT for his reelection.

The other WAY premature ejac..er, rejoicing around here is early.

The Nobel Prize is a joke. It means nothing.

It was circling the drain before Obama. He was just the final plunger. Like many other things, Urkel trashed everything that he touched...

Lol, nice one!

Plus, if Twitter existed in the Reagan era I doubt he’d have used it. Part of Trump’s legacy will be “Diplomacy by Tweet”. It’s part of his mastery of the theatrical aspect of being President.

It’s all about politics as far as CNN is concerned, never about what’s best for the country. But even viewing it from their skewed perspective, CNN knows the Trump-Kim visit can’t be realistically spun as anything other than a political win for President Trump.

His points are valid though, naturally the snark is strong.

I think Trump advanced the West’s cause some+. This was likely a small blow to the real enemy: China.

This short vid of US and NK proterctive agents hints at another advantage gained:

The Leftist press finds themselves in a quandary. Do they continue to serve as the mouthpiece of a Democrat Party, which is so pathetic that many left leaning Americans can no longer deny it, or do they try to save any remaining credibility? Anyone with a brain can see the Democrat Party for the train wreck that it is. It must pain them to know they’re on the losing team.
