Outspoken Trump critic Jeff Flake offered a rare defense of President Trump in response to former President Jimmy Carter's remarks suggesting the current president isn't a legitimate one.
Speaking at a Democratic forum on Friday, Carter weighed in on Russia's interference in the 2016 election and expressed his belief that it played a much bigger role in the election of Trump than Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded.
"I think a full investigation would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016," the 94-year-old former president said. "He lost the election, and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf."
When asked if he thought if Trump was an "illegitimate president," Carter responded, "Basically, what I just said, which I can’t retract," sparking laughter among the panel and the audience.
The former Arizona senator took to Twitter late on Friday in defense of the president, calling it an "awful thing" for Carter to say.
"This is an awful thing for one American president to say about another," Flake tweeted. "Argue that he shouldn't be reelected, sure, but don't say that he wasn't legitimately elected."

Carter is a vain old man suffering from his failure as POTUS. Jealous is a word that fits him.
Husband is in aviation business so I ended up reading something that happened a bunch of years ago. Carter was supposed to give a speech in Atlanta, I believe, so he drove from his home to the closest airport to Atlanta, hired a jet to fly him and wife from close airport to Atlanta, and then made a show of arriving on a private jet - in one of the shortest jet flights ever but of course no one realized that at first.
Really sad that this guy made it to POTUS - we’re still living with some of his rotten decisions today.

I’ve got a question. What is the left’s best argument on supposed collusion? Pretend Trump is at one of the debates in 2020...he turns to Bernie or whoever and says “tell the American people right now exactly how I colluded with the Russians to win in 2016.”

I’m taking care of my mother and she has it and it is not always been noticeable but she says stuff that I know is not true and defend it too. It seems Carter is displaying the same issues lately and seems to contradict stuff he said two years ago.

Between dementia and being relegated to being only the second-worst President of all time has made Jimmy even more bitter. And when he has lucid moments, he probably regrets not pulling a Hillary and going on a “why I lost” four to blame everybody else. It must be very lonely in that little mind, waiting for history to write that final chapter.

Forget collusion even. Just have them explain how Russia got Trump elected at all. How did they “hack the election?” Did Trump not actually win a majority of the electoral vote? Were those electors not actually elected by the voters of their respective states? How many people changed their votes because of anything the Russians did? And even if they did, how does that make 5eir votes illegitimate?
Bonus question: Does this mean Bill Clinton was illegitimate? Or did everyone forget about Chinese interference in the 1996 election and Clinton’s involvement in that. Unlike the Trump Administration, the Clinton Administration did not appoint a special counsel to investigate, despite calls for it to do so.

Democrats can say whatever they want; the press will spin it for them.
Notice there is no “fact checking” on Democrat debates? Everything is taken at face value and assumed to be true.
“Fact checking” suddenly becomes a thing when Republicans debate.
