Chuck Schumer Is Greatly Overestimating Trump’s Popularity
Slate ^ | November 28, 2018 | Jamelle Bouie

With most of the votes from the midterm election tallied, we now have a better sense of the scale of the Democratic victory. It is historic. Thus far, Democrats have earned more than 8.8 million more votes than Republicans, flipped 39 seats, and are poised to win a 40th as election officials continue counting ballots in California. In terms of their House margin, this makes 2018 the Democratic Party’s strongest midterm performance since Watergate. The popular vote margin is also a record high for Democrats, representing a decisive repudiation of the president and his party.

This should make concrete a still underappreciated fact of the political landscape. Despite endless profiles and analysis of his most outspoken backers, Donald Trump is deeply unpopular.

I’ve made this point before, contrasting his approval with that of past presidents operating under similar conditions. Historically, low unemployment, modest growth, and the lack of a major, highly visible foreign entanglement has been a recipe for high presidential approval ratings. Even in an age of high partisanship and polarization—where partisan identities drive assessment of objective economic conditions—you would expect the president to benefit from our growing economy...

The difference? The GOP and Conservatives do not have the political will, or the political passion, or the philosophical self-confidence to fight back.

***

At least 50% of the GOP wants to lose to the Democrats.

President Trump never held a majority in either House in Congress—not a true majority. Not with McCain and Flake in the Senate and Ryan in the House.

The good news is that there are only so many GOPe candidates that can kamikaze themselves to try to sink President Trump, and most of them retired before 2018 in an effort to do just that.

Now Trump has an actual majority in the Senate, and it’s up to us to deliver the House in 2020.

As noted previously, Presidential strength doesn't always translate into local strength. Alternatively, local weakness doesn't necessarily convey national weakness.

To wit:

-Reagan, in the process of winning one of the greatest Presidential re-election landslides, STILL hadn't the coat tails to bring about a Republican House majority: Reagan netted 54MM votes or 58% of the total (Mondale got 38MM). Further, Repubs flipped 16 House seats. Nonetheless, the aggregate Dem House vote of 43MM was 52% of the total, helping the. Keep the majority, and Dems picked up Senate seats.

-Same type of thing in 2012: Obama got 66MM votes/51% while Dem House members got 60MM votes - more than Repubs - yet remained in the minority.

I DO believe, that Repubs need to get a handle on fraud and be proactive. Dems seems to always have a "In Case of X Break Glass" plan.

But if we just whine that this is all fraud we are going nowhere. Combat fraud with building a wall of MAGA-loving centrists (they still exist) that overwhelms the faked votes. Lovers of liberty can't be flat footed in 2020.

We beat Hillary/avoided despotism by only 60,000 votes, we got tax reform and Gorsuch and Kavanaugh and a strong economy and NK willing to talk and Kanye wearing a MAGA hat. Now is not the time for people to bail because we lost the House.

Dems address defeat by sharpening their axes and becoming even more impossible. I hope weak-kneed conservatives finish their tantrum and get to work...there are scores of fellow citizens waiting to be red-pilled.

The points she addressed is based on the border wall, the signature promise of his Presidency, not being built. Losing the House in the Midterms guarantees it.

BTW, she was a fervent supporter of Trump up until recently.

There are many reasons why people voted against Trump surrogates in the Midterms. And I submit that his jerk personality was a major reason for the huge losses the Republicans took in the elections.

He is his own worse enemy and a poor standard barer for the causes he claims to support.

The RATs picked up 53 for 256 total in 2007...that didn’t last long...but we can’t talk about that, I guess.

The news is much worse than that...

20+ million completely LEGAL, foreign born, naturalized citizens.

Careful: My daughter in law, born in the UK, is a naturalized citizen, and you won't find anyone on either side of the Atlantic more "American."

"Ace" and his wife have insured (at some cost) that both their children are U.S. citizens despite being eligible for English citizenship.

It’s been almost a month since the election. They’re still counting. And of course the Dem votes keep magically appearing. To me this is a sign of voter fraud.

What, you mean the border wall that’s already started and partially funded, with 5 more billion on the way? That wall?

Not bad with a Congress hostile and intent on backstabbing him every step of the way says I. Not bad at all when 75% of DC are bought and paid for globalists.

Don’t expect a reply from that hit and run poster. He is probably another still butt sore Cruzer or trying to protect his pet beltway careerist GOP “conservative” from the deserved attacks the GOPe is getting for abandoning a POTUS under treasonous assault.

Re: “Careful: My daughter in law, born in the UK, is a naturalized citizen, and you won't find anyone on either side of the Atlantic more “American.”

If “American” means “Conservative Republican,” I'm glad to hear it.

Unfortunately, we still need to solve a very basic political math problem...

80% of new immigrant citizens, and 70% of first generation Americans, vote for the Democratic Party.

In other words, every time the USA imports someone like your daughter-in-law, we also import four brand new Democrats.

What we just saw in the 2018 mid-term election is what happens when the Democrats get their LEGAL Black, Hispanic, and Asian voters to the polls.

Many of the Comments I read on Free Republic seem to be strangely comforted by the claim that we actually lost the 2018 election because of voter fraud.

Republicans have been shrieking helplessly about voter fraud since Kennedy beat Nixon in 1960 - almost 60 years ago!

If the fraud claim is actually true, then there is no reason to believe we can stop voter fraud in 2020 any better than we stopped it in 2018.

My opinion - what we just saw in the Florida, Georgia, and Arizona Senate and governor races, and in the seven flipped Congressional Districts in California, should shake the GOP to its very core.

Thirty years of massive LEGAL immigration - which is still enthusiastically supported by a majority of rank and file Republicans - is annihilating the Republican Party.

Having candidates whose chief ability is mirror fogging causes many voters to say "screw it"

Election stealing has to have thin spreads to succeed, caused by low turnout.

I’m not sure I understand your Comment.

Do you generally support the fraud thesis for the 2018 election - or reject it?

In any event, GOP turn out in the 2014 midterm was excellent, and GOP turn out in 2018 actually increased by 20%.

The Democrat turn out in 2018 increased by 46% over 2014.

My election thesis - which I have stated dozens of times on Free Republic since 2005 - is that the Democrats have more LEGAL eligible voters than the GOP.

Because of massive LEGAL immigration, the Democrat lead increases every year.

Bottom Line - when the Democrats register and turn out their voters at the same rate as the GOP, the Democrats win.

I was counting the seats from this election. Ayotte was in 2016. Too bad she chose not to align herself with Trump, that might’ve carried her over.

Re: “I’m going to quote you at the December GOP county meeting! Very insightful!”

Wow. Thank you.

For the last 14 years, I have been Free Republic’s resident “Cassandra” on the issue of massive LEGAL immigration.

Cassandra: “The daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy in Greek mythology. Cassandra was cursed to utter prophecies that were true but that no one believed.”
