Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told The New York Times in an interview Thursday that she will need to wait for her congressional salary to kick in before she can rent an apartment in D.C.
She explained that the transition period will be very unusual, because I cant really take a salary. I have three months without a salary before Im a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real.
Ocasio-Cortez also told the Times that she had saved money before leaving her job at a restaurant and had planned accordingly with her partner.
Were kind of just dealing with the logistics of it day by day, but Ive really been just kind of squirreling away and then hoping that gets me to January," she said.
Ocasio-Cortez explained on Twitter after the interview's release that while everything with her housing is being figured out, her struggle with housing costs is one of "many little ways in which our electoral system isnt even designed (nor prepared) for working-class people to lead."

Ocasio-Cortez, who on Tuesday became the youngest women in history elected to Congress, worked as a bartender before toppling veteran lawmaker Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) in the Democratic primary election in June.
Like electing a 7 year old...
I’m sure she can get a temp job as a bartender in a town like DC.
This uninformed sub-intellect loser will end up being quite wealthy after her gig is over. What a fraud. Mainly, her career will be that of a back-bencher cashing her pay checks, making unintelligent loud noises and wandering around insulting working stiffs. The ny voters who elected her must be brain dead or worse.
Agree. she could walk the streets in DC in the meantime. I’m sure she could make enough for a motel room.
She’s from Westchester County (not The Bronx), so she knows all about the high cost of living. And she’ll probably have to hold down 2 jobs (which is what is driving the unemployment rate so darn low).
So she realized she flew to the state Washington by mistake?
and there will be plenty more juicy sound bites to come over the next two years.
The thing is her salary might not be enough for an apartment in D.C., it’s expensive. I read in the past of several people in Congress who lived in their offices. The rude awakening is coming for her.
That's what I was thinking. If she can afford to wear $5-$10k clothes she afford to rent an apartment.
Heck; some congressmen sleep in a closet in their office or a couch. Is she too good to do that for a minute or two.
Bartenders needed on DuPont Circle. Call John Boehner.
Well, she’s no dumber than Maxine Waters.
Cattle futures. That’s where the real money is at. Be a multi-millionaire in no time.
Ride the train. Biden did it for years...

Exactly my point.
She does not have to be very smart to become a multimillionaire and live a life of luxury.
All she has to do is listen to advice and follow it.
Doing that, she can become extremely wealthy, while actually working very, very little.
Maxine Waters can be her model.
It would do her good to sleep out in the park with the homeless for two months, in the winter.
