Shadowed by the death of six-term Sen. John McCain, Arizona voters are nominating candidates to replace his seat-mate in a primary contest that lays bare the fissures in a Republican Party dramatically remade by President Donald Trump.
Three Republicans are vying Tuesday to replace Sen. Jeff Flake, who is retiring after his fierce criticism of Trump made his political future in the state untenable. All three, including establishment favorite Rep. Martha McSally, have embraced Trump and distanced themselves from McCain a sign of how far the late senators status had fallen with conservatives who dominate Arizonas GOP primaries.
The outcome of the primary will be closely watched by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, who must name a replacement to fill McCains seat for the next two years. McCain died Saturday after a yearlong battle with brain cancer.
Arizona is one of three states holding elections Tuesday....

In MA, after Ted Kennedy finally died, we elected Scott Brown as a Tea Party Republican. The MA voters are pretty hopeless 99% of the time, but as soon as Ted died, we replaced him with a Republican. That was quite a message.
I’m hoping the AZ voters replace McCain with a Republican. If you know what I mean.
Hopefully the two of them are making a waitress sandwich in Hell and the waitress is Helen Thomas.
“...lays bare the fissures in a Republican Party dramatically remade by President Donald Trump...”
Lays bare the fissures?!?!?! FU biased tools. ALL THREE of the candidates support Trump!!!! Where are the co-called fissures?!?!? The people support the president! The fissures are between the media and the people.
Watching political ads in Florida...
Republicans: “I stand with President Trump!”
Democrats: “I’ll stand up to Trump and the NRA!”
I’m hoping the biggest voter draw McCain had was simply that he was so senior, rather than them agreeing with his RINO positions.
Many just knew that he was a POW in Vietnam and that was enough for them.
The only people making a fuss over McShame are the ‘rats and RINOs.
These candidates know voter data. The media worship is not the voters worship. The voters have rejected Flake and McCains brand of losing. They want winners and progress on the issues.
Forget McCain, any tiny influence he might have had was minimum at best. The Washington Swamp “McCain” Love Fest is pure “Hogwash” McCain simply was “Zero”!!!
Arizona & Florida voters, all, turn out and cast your votes today...for:
Trump backed, McSally & Ducey in Arizona and Trump backed Desantis & Scott in Florida. Your vote is badly needed and really counts because we have a golden opportunity in these two states to kick off the Trump Red Wave, and the destruction politically of the entire Democrat party.
Get out and vote today....Go, Trump, Go, McSally. Go, Ducey, Go DeSantis, Go, Scott. Go, MAGA!!!
“A national poll from June highlighted the shifting views on McCain.
The CNN survey found that 67 percent of Democrats had a favorable opinion of McCain,
while just 33 percent of Republicans had a favorable view of the GOP senator.”
It still blows my mind that McCain was somehow able to convince Arizona voters for 35 years that he was a Conservative.
“Hopefully the two of them are making a waitress sandwich in Hell and the waitress is Helen Thomas.”
Most likely THEY are the filling of the sandwich...with a sadistic demon at each end.
They deserve it.
Status as a war hero with media praise for his moderation in the senate was the appeal IMO.
Politically he was a John Kerry clone. Only more stealthy.
Yeah you’re right. People couldn’t think for themselves and got duped for 35 years.
He consistently said all the right things before his reelections then consistently did the opposite. Arizonans have notoriously bad memories. They put way more stock in his military service record than he deserved too.
This isn't about that asshat though. This is about getting a real conservative and not another RINO in that slot. Hopefully a dem won't steal it. Six years is way too long for a senator to be in office. Four is about right and term limits of 2 terms is desperately needed.
The problem with large cities everywhere USA is they cancel out the rural/small town votes which covers most the state. I'd like to see city people get a 1/4 vote to every rural vote to even things out.
“It still blows my mind that McCain was somehow able to convince Arizona voters for 35 years that he was a Conservative.”
He only had to fool them for two elections. Just long enough to get some seniority and be assigned to one or more powerful committees.
Once that happens voters are loathe to throw away that kind of stroke in D.C.
“term limits of 2 terms is desperately needed.”
You put the nail in the head right there.
I agree that term limits should be a top priority.
McSallycain is lying to get elected, she learned from McCain.
She is an open borders/amnesty Bush League Republican.
Will turn into a Flake as soon as elected.
