U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-California, has cancelled a planned trip to Birmingham due to security concerns. She was scheduled to speak Friday at an annual conference for black female politicians, local officials and community leaders.
Waters was supposed to address an audience of black women for the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative (NOBEL) Women's Annual Legislative Conference, which starts today and ends Sunday. But NOBEL President Karen Camper, a state representative from Tennessee, confirmed that Waters was no longer coming because of security reasons. Details about the safety concerns have not been released and it's not known if a specific threat were made.
Waters' cancellation comes during a time when both Republican and Democratic lawmakers are criticizing remarks she made during an immigration rally telling citizens to publicly confront members of President Donald Trump's administration. Her statement was made in response to Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy, which led to the separation of children from families at the Mexico border.
"Let's make sure we show up wherever we have to show up," Waters said during the rally. "And if you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them. And you tell them they're not welcome anymore, anywhere. We've got to get the children connected to their parents."
Multiple lawmakers, such as House Majority Kevin McCarthy, have asked Waters to apologize for her statements.
"We have to have civility," McCarthy told Fox News during an interview on Monday. "I can disagree with somebody philosophically, but to personally attack -- to remove somebody and not serve them? What's interesting to me, the people who claim tolerance seem to be the most intolerant in this process."
DID THEY CANCEL HER INVITATION TO SPEAK?
Her toxicity creates an odious hazard for the people of Alabama. Thanks for caring about the people of that state, Max.
Wigs don’t wear well in the hot humid South. The scalp begins to perspire profusely and then the odor begins. She doesn’t want to stink-up Atlanta. However, she stinks up the environment everywhere she goes.
This idiot is the perfect representative for her district. Her constituents live in poverty while she enjoys her $4.5-million mansion located in a gated community outside her district. Yep, she represents idiots for tolerating this.
Sympathy play.
She's the ranking member on the Committee on Financial Services committee. She may rate.
Nope, only the top party leaders. Too expensive otherwise.
Irony: When a woman who regularly makes the news for supporting political violence cancels her scheduled screeching tirade because she’s afraid of political violence.
Birmingham is surrounded by suburbs that aren’t majority black.
Heartbreaking!
Not exactly. Capitol Police can protect any Congressman anywhere in the USA, and have statutory jurisdiction anywhere in the USA to do so. Capitol Police answer only to Congress.
Mad Max could easily have gotten Capitol Police protection.
I would assume she’d need Pelosi’s say-so to get protection. Don’t see that happening.
hmm... is the announcement the NOBEL way of saying, she’s too bathanging crazy even for us?
“hmm... is the announcement the NOBEL way of saying, shes too bathanging crazy even for us?”
It’s called awarding a NOBEL prize
Birmingham is nearly as liberal as her Watts community.
And just wait...theyll spin it as violent threats against democrats.
"...theyll spin it as violent threats against Democrats..."
I wasnt aware that the harridan was scheduled to come to Birmingham.
Boy, did we dodge a bullet. I dont live in Birmingham (Thank God) but I dont want to be in the same state as that hag.
