The latest October surprise: Trump pivots and saves his candidacy at second debate
Fox News Opinion ^ | October 9, 2016 | Douglas E. Schoen, Democratic pollster

Posted on 10/09/2016 9:20:01 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Facing tremendous pressure to appear contrite and offer a genuine apology for his comments about taking advantage of women some 11 years ago, Donald Trump did something better: he pivoted.

The debate focused on the #TrumpTapes for barely a few minutes and it wasn’t the fault of the moderators or Hillary Clinton. Trump just moved past the apology faster than anyone expected, straight into his attacks on Bill Clinton – which we knew were coming based on the past few days and the pre-debate press conference he held with women who have accused Bill Clinton of sexual assault – to the meat of this election: change versus status quo.

Trump emphasized over and over again that Clinton has spent the last 30 years in public service and has little to show for it. He went at her foreign policy record and cited failures in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria and Iran. After missing opportunities to hit Clinton on her emails and Benghazi, he didn’t let that happen again, bringing up both several times....

Trump reminds me of Wyatt Earp. You can shoot at him all day long but you can’t hit him. You just shoot his coat full of holes.

The Trump tape backfired on the Dems and GOPe.

Instead of knocking him out, it motivated Trump to take off the gloves and give Hillary a much bigger thrashing than he would’ve otherwise.

And his "Lincoln" response was excellent. Perhaps Hillary never read the words of Lincoln contained in the following letter from Lincoln to Pierce. Clearly, Lincoln would not be pleased with her positions which conflict with the Jeffersonian ideas so reverenced by Lincoln himself.

Letter to Henry L. Pierce and others

In this “all honor to Jefferson” letter, Abraham Lincoln declines an invitation to speak in Boston at a birthday celebration honoring Thomas Jefferson. His letter, however, may have been intended to be read at the event. The letter contains familiar arguments which Lincoln used in speeches during the late 1850s, including an allusion to Euclid. It is loaded with quotable remarks, such as “he would would be no slave, must consent to have no slave.” In one of the most thought-provoking passages, Lincoln praises Jefferson’s foresight and wisdom evident in his planting an abstract truth in the Declaration of Independence, “applicable to all men and all times.”

Springfield, Ills, April 6, 1859

Messrs. Henry L. Pierce, & others.

Gentlemen

Your kind note inviting me to attend a Festival in Boston, on the 13th. Inst. in honor of the birth-day of Thomas Jefferson, was duly received. My engagements are such that I can not attend.

Bearing in mind that about seventy years ago, two great political parties were first formed in this country, that Thomas Jefferson was the head of one of them, and Boston the head-quarters of the other, it is both curious and interesting that those supposed to descend politically from the party opposed to Jefferson should now be celebrating his birthday in their own original seat of empire, while those claiming political descent from him have nearly ceased to breathe his name everywhere.

Remembering too, that the Jefferson party were formed upon its supposed superior devotion to the personal rights of men, holding the rights of property to be secondary only, and greatly inferior, and then assuming that the so-called democracy of to-day, are the Jefferson, and their opponents, the anti-Jefferson parties, it will be equally interesting to note how completely the two have changed hands as to the principle upon which they were originally supposed to be divided.

The democracy of to-day hold the liberty of one man to be absolutely nothing, when in conflict with another man’s right of property. Republicans, on the contrary, are for both the man and the dollar; but in cases of conflict, the man before the dollar.

I remember once being much amused at seeing two partially intoxicated men engage in a fight with their great-coats on, which fight, after a long, and rather harmless contest, ended in each having fought himself out of his own coat, and into that of the other. If the two leading parties of this day are really identical with the two in the days of Jefferson and Adams, they have perfomed the same feat as the two drunken men.

But soberly, it is now no child’s play to save the principles of Jefferson from total overthrow in this nation.

One would start with great confidence that he could convince any sane child that the simpler propositions of Euclid are true; but, nevertheless, he would fail, utterly, with one who should deny the definitions and axioms. The principles of Jefferson are the definitions and axioms of free society.

And yet they are denied and evaded, with no small show of success.

One dashingly calls them “glittering generalities”; another bluntly calls them “self evident lies”; and still others insidiously argue that they apply only to “superior races.”

These expressions, differing in form, are identical in object and effect—the supplanting the principles of free government, and restoring those of classification, caste, and legitimacy. They would delight a convocation of crowned heads, plotting against the people. They are the van-guard—the miners, and sappers—of returning despotism.

We must repulse them, or they will subjugate us.

This is a world of compensations; and he who would be no slave, must consent to have no slave. Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it.

All honor to Jefferson—to the man who, in the concrete pressure of a struggle for national independence by a single people, had the coolness, forecast, and capacity to introduce into a merely revolutionary document, an abstract truth, applicable to all men and all times, and so to embalm it there, that to-day, and in all coming days, it shall be a rebuke and a stumbling-block to the very harbingers of re-appearing tyranny and oppression.

Your obedient Servant
A. Lincoln—

Not so. He moved passed them right into what he would do for the American people. Only when it was brought up again and again did he finally go after Hillary and how she enabled Bill Clinton...and then Hillary laughably claimed she took the high road....

If you watch closely she was having trouble controlling her eyes. That’s why she blinks a lot. It helps her cover it up.

This is the second of third article I have seen in the last hour online where someone - definitely a Democrat/Liberal says that Trump saved his campaign tonight. No, his campaign was not dying anyway. He might not win, I have no idea who will win, but it was not dying.

He didn’t save his campaign because it was never really in danger. That was all folderol by wishful thinkers.

So sad about all those pubs who abandoned Trump over the recent tape, now they look like total idiots....my heart bleeds...NOT!

The only thing that Hillary has done in the past 30 years in politics is make herself, and her family rich.

Douglas E. Schoen is by far the best Democrat for analysis I've seen on TV. He telegraphed Hillary's campaign would be a no holds barred assault on Donald Trump; that is exactly what she has done and will do; it will continue with the MSM's assistance. Trump avoided elimination tonight and in Frank Luntz's words is back in the race. Hopefully the polls next week will not dip too badly from Fri/Sat/Sun pre-debate and will start to turn upward.

Exactly - going from “flat broke” after Bubba’s Presidency to being worth (at least) $200 million - doesn’t just accidentally happen. I wish Mr. Trump had emphasized that point even more - but he did a great job in what he did say.
