So, America, are you really ready for a woman president? And how might magical thinking or a fresh scandal flip this election on its head?
These are just some of the undercurrent issues that Kim Campbell, the only female prime minister Canadas ever had, thinks could tip Hillary Clintons lead in favor of Donald Trump. In this condensed and edited conversation, the former Progressive Conservative party leader weighs in on what might upend this years U.S. presidential battle.
OZY: What under-the-radar issues could really shake up this race and become major debate points this fall?
Kim Campbell: I think the questions of racism, xenophobia and the role of immigrants in American society are certainly among the undercurrents. But one of the underlying issues is the question of gender and whether Americans are ready to elect a woman as president.
The reason I say this is because after I was out of office, I did a lot of reading in the growing research of cognitive psychology about gender barriers, which also relates to other characteristics of non-prototypical leaders. It could be race, as Barack Obama faced, and one of the very interesting things that is now well understood by social and cognitive psychologists is the fact that the way we think we think isnt necessarily how we think....

Hillary can blame my dog, Rufus, as long as she loses.
Kim Campbell held office from June to November of 1993 which is why no one remembers her.
She has no lead dope!
“But one of the underlying issues is the question of gender and whether Americans are ready to elect a woman as president.”
First, I want PROOF that Hillary! IS a woman!
Secondly, I’d LOVE to see a woman President in my lifetime. But NOT that corrupt, Fabian Socialist Harridan! Why would I, as a woman, slit my own throat? Yeesh!
My only possible response... Canadians are in a lot more trouble than I thought. Before long, it will be raining koranimals and perverts, and Canadians won't know what happened.
That "sexism" whine is so 1980s.
So is the racism PC meme.
Perhaps we should ship a coupla hundred thousand BLM thugs to enjoy the Canuck paradise. All volunteers, of course.
There have already been several major women leaders in the world: Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, Benazir Bhutto, and Angela Merkel to name some major ones.
So the world is ready for women in positions of power, they’ve already had them: Jewish women, Muslim women, conservative women, liberal women.
What the world hasn’t seen is a corrupt, inept, unqualified woman in power. And hopefully it never will.
Good grief. Kim, sweetheart, you didn't lose in 1992 because of "gender barriers." You lost because your predecessor crammed a very unpopular tax through Parliament by temporarily stacking the Senate with Conservatives, thereby bringing down the wrath of voters upon the PCs.
She lost her seat in Parliament, period. So she would have been replaced as Prime Minister even if her party had retained control of Parliament.
COULD lose her head...?
They already have trouble with BLM, believe it or not.

Just as I thought for the longest time that I might be happy to see a black president. But not an African American... rather an American African. An American first, a tribal identity politician second or third.
That has failed so badly, that it defies the laws of probabilities to realize that we have been presented a woman who can only be worse.
she also caused the PC party to implode
She’d be gawd-awful! *SHUDDER*
And at the risk of sounding like a RACIST, this Half-Blackrican has been one lousy experiment as well.
I never said that she had a lead - that was the post’s headline - whose’s the dope?
She lost her seat in Parliament, period. So she would have been replaced as Prime Minister even if her party had retained control of Parliament.
Actually, it was both. In the 1992 national election, the PCs were decimated, reduced from a majority government to two seats. (Incidentally, one of those two Conservative MPs, Elsie Wayne, passed a way a few days ago.) The Liberals won the majority, so they formed the government and their leader (Jean Chretien) became the prime minister.
Had the PCs won a majority and Campbell lost her own seat, she would still have been Prime Minister. This actually happens not infrequently in provincial elections; Nova Scotia party leaders have lost their own elections six times since 1992.
Typically what happens when a party leader loses his own riding is that an MP in a safe riding is asked to resign, triggering a by-election, in which the party leader is the candidate. Or he may just wait until the next general election and lead the party while sitting in the public gallery. John Turner became Prime Minister when he replaced Pierre Trudeau as Liberal leader in 1984, but opted not to seek a seat until the next national election. (He won his seat, but the Liberals were defeated.)
I stopped reading when she said that Hillary has received twice as much negative press as Trump.
