(CNN)Donald Trump's campaign is scrambling to ramp up its planning for the general election, including scraping together a list of potential vice presidential candidates, after Trump abruptly became the presumptive Republican nominee Tuesday night.
The Trump campaign, blindsided by rival Ted Cruz's sudden exit from the race, is now beginning internal deliberations about potential vice presidential candidates, two Trump campaign sources tell CNN.

The first real consideration is whether Trump is going to choose a presumptive successor or is he going someone that can help move legislation, etc. but is not seen as a successor and thus allowing the field in 8 years to be wide open. I believe the latter would help him solidify the party.
No, I don't. Neither do I consider Cruz "establishment."
My point was, and I had hoped to make that clear in my post (but obviously not), that the anti-establishment wave is so strong this year that *anyone* who holds or who has held a GOP office (like West or Cruz) is suspect. I was a Cruz supporter from the very beginning, and scratched my head for the longest time why he never got more traction early on and towards the end.
My conclusion: the anti-establishment mood this year is so overwhelming that even anti-establishment types like Cruz (or West) are being rejected in favor of a *purely* non-establishment Trump.

Have you ever listened to Newt talk? Trump would benefit tremendously with Newt as VP. Imagine Jan 2017 and Newt is sitting in the State of the Union seat as VP.
You are so so wrong about Newt. Trump needs wise counsel and their is no one better, who loves our country, than Newt Gingrich. Who is your person? Guarantee Professor Gingrich would be a much better VP than anyone you could suggest. We do not need on the job trainees at such a time as this. We want Trump and we want Trump to bring the real REAL American Patriots with brains to his administration. Trump is going to win either way. He doesn’t need to focus on certain states. Trump already destroyed the old playbook which is why Cruz and Jeb Bush are still scratching their heads. Trump will win the swing states on his own. This is a movement.
Sessions is my fav Senator. He is more valuable by staying in the Senate. Trump or any GOP nominee will pretty automatically get AL, and most, if not all of, the South.
I wasn’t big on Haley’s GOP response to the SOTU with not even thinly veiled shots at Trump right before primary season got going. She didn’t let up much afterwards, either. Wasn’t she a Rubio/#Never Trump during the SC primary?
Just don’t know enough about Martinez or Portman. But in my book, Haley is OUT.

Newt Gingrich — Chief of Staff. Perfect role for him. On the fringe of public media scrutiny, but a power position where he can advise Trump on the in’s and out’s of DC politics.

NO ONE CARES about some stupid photo op. Trump will win because he is the messenger of a movement to make America great again. Period. If Trump says i am choosing Newt as VP for all these reasons (which, hello, most of his supporters will be like YESSSSS) If Trump chooses Newt for a variety of reasons, it will show that Trump is not playing, he truly is all about making our country again because he is sick and tired of the lying media no one cares that newt sat on a couch with someone they don’t even know several years ago. Again, it will not matter for even one vote. Hope Trump chooses Newt.
I stand by my assertion that, in view of the overwhelming anti-establishment mood this year (which I think explains why Cruz, despite being clearly anti-establishment, never caught on strongly), it would be to Trump’s advantage and not going against a *very* strong trend, to pick a VP who has never been connected to the establishment (by me narrowly defined as anyone who has ever held a GOP political office).
As for Newt, he is pro-Trump, a brilliant politician and tactician, whose talents would best be served, IMO, as Chief of Staff. In that position, Newt would be contributing daily to the strategy and tactics of a Trump presidency. As VP? What state(s) does he deliver? And what VP has ever had as much influence in a presidential administration as a Chief of Staff?
There's nothing Gingrich does as Trump's VP that he couldn't do simply as a paid campaign advisor -- and then later as a senior White House advisor.
I may be missing something, but why do I hear Joe Scarborough’s name come up for VP. Isn’t he just a news show host? Why would anyone think he qualifies as someone a heartbeat away from the presidency?

Ahem… what part of the 2016 election cycle should remain typical hasn’t registered? Trump needs to choose the best person to help him in the first 100 days throughout the full 4 years. This isn’t about posing as POTUS for Trump. This is about truly making a difference for our nation, and if Newt Gingrich is the best confidant to assist Trump in his mission, then Trump supporters will support him over broken glass. Newt Gingrich would help a Trump administration so so much. Hope it happens.

Trump MUST have a running mate as anti-Globalist as Trump. Anything less is a problem. Must be someone who can work for the goal immediately, plus who will continue the movement into the future as it grows and prospers.
Trump is delivering his own states. Trump is going to win New York. You do realize that independents and the conservatives like Sean Hannity were not allowed to vote in the NY primary, only registered Republicans.
Trump will win New York. Does he have to get out the vote? Yes. But no way is carpet bagger Clinton who doesn’t even have a real marriage going to win New York over Trump.
Trump will easily win FL, PA, OH and likely VA and so many other states. Trump is going to win, it doesn’t matter who is VP is. The old playbook of choosing a VP based on a battle ground state is tossed out the window with a candidate like Trump. Which is also why if/when he chooses Newt, his supporters will understand Trump the CEO has selected the most qualified and competent person to assume the role. Trumps VP selection is not going to be window dressing or about a specific state in the general election.
Trump is not afraid to be honest. All he has to say is why he hired his VP. If it’s Newt, most people won’t need an explanation because Newt is so brilliant, has a proven track record and most importantly LOVES our country.

The superficially obvious choice of a women I don’t think will help. It never has for Republicans. Trump would do better with a charismatic VP with loads of statecraft experience and the opposite personality. In essence someone without all his flaws. There is more choice for that among men then among the few high profile GOP women.
Why would Trump want to select a light weight for a VP. Not going to happen. Would not be surprised if Trump picks Newt. Hope he does. Newt would have his back and he ability to get things done. Trump is the messenger, big ideas, connects with people, Newt would be the work horse to get things done. Although for Newt, because he is so so smart, it's nothing for him to get things done, day in a day out.
