I am a delegate to both the North Carolina State GOP convention to be held in May and my Congressional District Convention next week. My political insider connection is that I showed up at my precinct caucus/county convention last month, where I expressed the willingness to commit to the time and expense of attending these other conventions.
I have made a similar commitment every few years for the past three decades. When I lived in Chicago I was also a delegate to several Illinois State GOP conventions for the same reasons: I voted in Republican primaries, attended my ward Republican organization's meetings and made the commitment to attend the state convention. As a law professor I had who was also a veteran of the Minnesota State legislature used to tell his class, The world belongs to those who show up to participate.
The sad fact is that many times delegate/alternate slots to political conventions go unfilled because there are not enough people willing to participate. A county convention may take from half to a full day depending on the size of the county. A congressional district may also take up to a day. The state party convention's general assembly is also an entire day and unless the state convention is in one's hometown, attendance involves at least one night's stay in a hotel. Plus there are registration fees to pay and travel costs.
There is one big difference this year. As I listen to Trump whine about how unfair it is that he actually has to come up with hundreds of warm bodies willing to spend the time and money to go to Cleveland to cast the votes he won through his plurality finishes in various primaries, I marvel at the incredible level of organization inside Ted Cruz's campaign...

But the Presidency belongs only to someone who is a Natural Born Citizen.
Because I don't care if someone was born in a manger on July 4th! A "Natural Born" citizen requires two US parents!
Or so I've been told...
You’ve Been lied to.
When the Trumpets coordinate these attacks on FReepmail, what else do you talk about?
That's for sure...
More gaslighting. No, it’s not about the system being rigged to ensure a GOPe win. It’s about Trump not showing up. What complete B.S. To repeat, this is like the guy who cheats at cards blaming the other guy for not showing up to play poker with him. This has nothing to do with ground game, and everything to do with a rigged system.
Trumpets? Attacks? FReepmail? What are these things of which you speak?
It's all part of a vast Trump-wing conspiracy.
Conspiracies abound...
But you don’t have any proof, just the words of Trump, Stone and Manafort?
The article is correct on how easy it is to become a delegate, if you are willing to put in the time. I have never been a delegate, because I considered it inappropriate (this is the first year I have not been working for a candidate), but I have been offered that opportunity many times, including by three candidates this year.
Trump has to up his ground game, not just in getting his voters to the polls but also in getting genuine supporters picked as delegates. It is the Trump campaign’s job, and I’m disappointed in their minimal effort. I’ll vote for Trump, but if he doesn’t make it, I’ll blame him. Yes, the establishment tries to stack the deck, but Trump has enough support to beat them even in a rigged game - if he does his part.
For all of you who have not yet received the latest edition of the Newspeak dictionary, let me fill you in on the updates.
Controlling the delegate selection process to ensure that only Cruz supporters will be allowed to win delegate positions will now be referred to as having a strong ground game.
Fighting back against disenfranchisement of voters will now be referred to as whining.
Any questions?
Whining while talking about whining? Quite a trick.
In addition Big Brother, in his wisdom, has now determined that if your car has been stolen, or your house broken into, you will now be held responsible for the theft for not protecting your property better. Those who committed the theft will now be absolved of any guilt. This is for your own good, people. Any questions?
If Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush were going head-to-head, Cruzs birthplace would be reason for dismissal from the competition. Since he and the GOPe are going against Trump, those details dont matter because its all about taking down Trump. The GOP is interested in keeping all their pawns on the board at this time
Ted Cruz is a Globalist. His support for TPP and being responsible for fast-tracking loss of sovereignity to UN and international law under the guise of free-trade was treasonous. He wanted to speed up passing of TPP via simple majority. Very treacherous. Who needs Ivy league brains if theyre going to be clever on the other side of the equation.
You Bombay bloggers are certainly boisterous.
Cruz is not principled. He only uses that act to win votes and mold his persona. The reason why he promotes his own faith and other Conservative issues so strongly is just like the tactic BHO telling middle-class Americans that he is for them. The opposite was true. This is how politicians work. Ted Cruzs conservative meme has become a joke particularly because he tries to push these aspects so farcically.
Classic. More personal pronoun abuse than Obama could dream of. Hope you’re paid on spam volume, rather than results? Because the number of Freepers you’ve turned off your candidate would add up to several delegates now.
While the Cruz campaign talks about rules and processes, the Trump campaign talks about voters, democracy and a system that is phony and has been for years. Guess which one will prevail, especially during this cycle of the ‘outsider’. Cruz once again, as with his NY values comment, got ahead of his skis.
Bombay? Try Matanzas Cuba! It’s just as warm and very humid, thanks!
I’m doing a piece on Rafael Bienvenido Cruz who was born in Cuba. Trying to separate the fiction from the facts. Cruz claims that as a youth in Cuba he joined the Cuban Revolution an organization of pro-Communist youths, in support of Fidel Castro against Fulgencio Batista. I suppose this explains why he endearingly called his son, ‘Felito’-lil Fidel, throughout his childhood.
Rafael also claims that after being captured and tortured by the Batista regime he decided to leave Cuba. Rafael has stated that a family friend bribed an official from the Batista government and was thereby able to get an exit visa to leave Cuba to attend college. Which places Rafael instantly at UT Austin bypassing the admissions process. ....Stay tuned, need to fetch my morning cafe con leche.
Like the Electoral College in the general election, it reflects the electorate somewhat, but not exactly - but this is how we avoid a President AlGore-type of fiasco.
