Why Ted Cruz’s Facial Expression Makes Me Uneasy
Psychology Today ^ | Posted Jan 01, 2016 | Richard E. Cytowic M.D

He’s a brilliant orator with a sharp legal mind. But his expression unsettles me. I know my reaction is visceral and automatic, but as a neurologist it is my business to notice things out of the ordinary and probe them. The Senator’s atypical expressions leave me uneasy.

Skill in reading faces is so fundamental to our species that 54 facial muscles orchestrate its endless nuances, which others read like a book just as we read them. Only some of these many facial muscles are under voluntary control, which is one reason it is so hard to maintain a poker face or counterfeit a smile.

Downturned expressions usually signal disagreeableness or disgust. But I honestly don’t know because such an expression is rare in the context of public presentations that are meant to win people over. He may well be unaware that the message of his body language is incongruent with his words.

This is true. I actually wanted to dislike him at first. But I just couldn’t. His devotion to his dogs and the devotion I could see (reading faces again) from his daughter, Jenna, to him started it. But he really is the kind of guy you want to have a beer with. And I don’t even drink beer. (Okay- the kind of guy you want to invite to your barbecue.)

Quite the contrary.

Sorry to burst your bubble if you think I want the government decide to force the same rules for everyone!

Like Cruz, I'm a yuuuge 10th Amendment supporter!

Unlike liberals and even some of those who consider themselves conservative, those issues are best and constitutional when decided by the voters (not the judges and not some court) in a state. Let the voters decide!

That's the problem with liberals, they just don't trust the people to decide.

I don't want my state to be forced to honor NY's gay whatever you want to call their relationship, it's not marriage!

What ever NYers want to vote into law, if it doesn't violate the laws for the rest of us, NYers are free to grant something but they are NOT free to give these relationships Federal benefits, insurance coverage from national companies or they may not come to the State of Kansas and get a divorce, for instance!

We've all accepted for decades, Nevada's legalization of prostitution! There are businesses that operate solely for that purpose!

Prostitution is illegal in almost every other state and to my knowledge, no state is forced to recognize Nevada's law.

That's what Cruz has and will fight for! His personal opinion is one thing, the law is something else.

We used to treat abortion similarly, it was legal in some states, not in others.

Liberals couldn't tolerate people deciding for themselves, so in 1973, they found a way to force their way into a law for all in a sham lawsuit, Roe vs Wade, which had been a lie but found a reason that anyone who wants an abortion, for any state, forced states to recognize laws that were previously a crime in their states.

I'd like to turn all those "laws" that smack down the 10th Amendment in each state.

If Cruz had said in Iowa speeches, that he was fine with NY making gay marriage legal, my respect for Cruz would have tripled. Instead, he thumped the bible in Iowa and gave go ahead to gay marriage in NY.

Sorry, but in my book that is classic malleable career politician.

Then stay away from petty people and post on threads of your liking. Why stoop to voyeurism about people who are petty in your high and mighty mind?

Because it’s entertaining.

He agreed with Iowa values, what's so wrong about that?

In NY groups, they know where Ted stands on the issue but he assures them he "trusts the system." Ted told them he "stands for New Yorker's right to determine what kind of laws they want for themselves!"

Now some conservatives (even some of my friends) don't like that. They have now been conditioned to think these laws to be the same for everyone and they want that law to be no gay "marriages!"

This is how liberals claim that the "religious right want to tell them what to do in their own bedrooms!"

The uncomfortable truth here is, it's the liberals want to demand that everyone "respect what they choose to do in their bedrooms" and demand also that it becomes the law of the land!

The author does not know anything. His last line even says so.

“For the record I am not a Democrat. I’m at a loss to verbalize what unsettles me so when I watch the freshman senator. But it leaves me cold”

When Bergoglio walked out on the balcony, looking absolutely like a zombie, without a flicker of joy on his face...and then when he knelt down for the crowd to bless him-—RETCH!!! My opinion of him has gone DOWN, DOWN, DOWN. Worst Pope in many centuries.

Nothing wrong with Iowa values, and nothing wrong with 10th Amendment.

What is wrong is tailoring the message to the audience. That is what Obama did. That is what Hillary is doing now. It smacks of slippery career politician speak. UntrusTED.

“By the way, I wonder what Dr Cytowic thinks about obama’s expressions.”

That was what I was looking for when I came across this article.
