This is becoming something of an almost comfortable ritual at this point. Another week goes by, Donald Trump does or says something to generate a new round of headlines, everyone predicts that hes on the way out, and the next poll shows The Donald further ahead than ever. Then the veteran analysts are left staring at their laptops forlornly, stuck with the unenviable task of writing something to explain why. Once the first set of numbers came out which showed that not only was Trump on top of the GOP heap but was within striking distance of Hillary in the general (and losing to her by less than Jeb, by the way) the task became even more of a burden. This morning, our friend Jim Geraghty was forced to struggle with the question and I quote What if Donald Trump Really is Electable?
Well, the unenviable task of answering that question falls to Matt Lewis this week, and hes hot on the trail of a fresh explanation. You see, The Donald is the answer for people who are so beat down, left behind and simply angry that they feel theres nothing left to lose, so they might as well go crazy. (Some emphasis added)
There is a courage born out of desperation. People who feel they have nothing to live for and nothing to lose might as well throw a Hail Mary and hope for the best. And make no mistake, there are plenty of Americans right now who truly feel theyve been left behind. They are likely among the most susceptible to Donald Trumps message.
Its logical: If youve got nothing to lose, and Candidate A is telling you he can magically fix all your problems and Candidate B is telling you he will do his best, but politics is hard and change takes time why wouldnt you take a chance with Candidate A?
The problem, of course, is for those of us who do have something to lose.
Now, I realize that by saying this, I risk sounding like an elitist. It is ironic that I, the son of a prison guard could sound like an elitist in chastising a billionaire real estate mogul, but its important for those of us observing and writing about this to simultaneously realize two things: 1). There are a lot of vulnerable people out there who are understandably hurt and frustrated, and have lost faith in the American Dream, and 2). Vulnerable people are the most easily manipulated by false prophets.
Whether its a stranger approaching you in a dark alley, or someone entering the voting booth, the most dangerous person youll encounter is someone who believes he has nothing left to lose.
Dangerous? Easily manipulated by false prophets?
In terms of the five stages of grief, I think Matt has successfully cleared denial and anger and is currently teetering between bargaining and depression. (Were still a good ways from acceptance, though.) Theres at least one cautionary note Id send Matts way, however, and its the same one which Ive brought up with other folks in the past. No matter how dismayed you may be over Trumps ascendancy and no matter how soon you think its coming to an end, its probably never a good strategy to frame your explanation for his success in the form of an insult to the people who are supporting him. Lets assume for a moment that youre right and that Trump will eventually fall out of favor. Youre probably going to want his supporters to back your candidate. Or at least youll hope that theyll show up and vote for somebody without a D after their name. Ticking them off accomplishes nothing.
I completely agree that there is a large swath of voters out there (and theyre not all Republicans many of them might not even normally be voters) who feel completely abandoned by the government and the leadership of both parties. People like that would certainly be attracted to a new voice echoing the things they feel. But that doesnt mean that they are desperate or have nothing left to lose. Maybe theyre just tired of the status quo and want something better. That may be precisely the opposite of desperation it just might be hope.
But in any event, all of this is based on some assumptions which arent looking quite so iron clad these days. Lets review all the things weve known so far, shall we?
◾Trump isnt actually going to run. Hes just doing it for attention or because its good for his business deals.
◾Okay, so he says hes running, but hes not going to file any of the forms and mount a real campaign.
◾Well, fine. So he did the bare minimum to call it an actual campaign. But nobody is going to take him seriously.
◾Look
I get it. Hes got some support. But hes basically tied with a bunch of other people in a crowded field.
◾Fine. Hes way out in front, but the polls show he would get creamed by Hillary in the general.
◾WHAT? The country is obviously full of crazy people so I quit.
Im not endorsing anyone at this point, Matt. We have a broad, diverse field with a bunch of talented folks in it. But at some point we may have to just acknowledge that Trump may not just dry up and blow away. When the time comes, Im going to vote for the GOP nominee. But by now you must have had one or two nights where you lay awake and the thought crept into your head saying that it just might be Trump.
I was going to type a final rejoinder to drive the point home for you, Matt, but really this says it all:
I listened a little to Medved. His line of attack on Trump voters is, and this is a quote, “why do you think Trump is the saviour?” He actually admits that a “good” President will not “fix things, just run the country better, maybe cut taxes”. I think all of this paranoia is very similar to the attacks on Buchanan a few election cycles ago. As long as he was a non-candidate he was a “member in good standing”. When he went for the nomination he was quickly branded a racist anti-Semite. The result, he went third party and then was blamed for Bob (let’s make a deal) Doles’ loss in ‘96.
I saw Dr. Carson on anchor babies, great response. Sounds like Trump on this issue.
Your husband is right. And he’s not talking about a “used car salesman”. He’s talking about someone who can sell something because he believes in it. And the best salesman is the one who can sell himself.
“false prophet”. Great explanation.
I consider Sanders the false prophet of a tried and failed political system, seen time and time again.
I’m a Nativist. America has been open-arms to invaders ever since the Vietnamese boat people, whether they were practicing VietCong, or not.
Absent an argument on issues, they must resort to ad hominem.
It's called the country class who want their country back from the corrupt political and corporate elites who have lost touch with the people and pursue their own interests even if it means destroying the country.
Yes, I am dangerous!!!! My vote has been weaponized to take out establishment GOPe!!
I listened to the press conference on you tube at Derry, NH. Trump is sooooo presidential managing & taking questions from the press! I almost forgot that he wasn’t president yet - that’s how good he was!
None of them are going to close the border. Do you believe everything you hear. Trump closing the border is as believable as Trump’s saying he had a blockbuster info on Obama’s birth certificate. Do you remember that big lie Trump told? If you follow Trump’s career, you know he would encourage illegal immigration.
:)
Personally speaking, I can’t imagine how one Donald Trump could possibly be worse than Hillary, Sanders, Biden, O’Malley, John Kerry, Elizabeth Warren, or any other Obama/Marxist wannabee.
Perpetual politicians steeped in Marx and a Republican Party who sleeps with them in the legislative chamber of Congress are not my idea of good ole boy American representation.
Donald Trump strikes me as a gregarious all American who made it big and brash, and could make a million times better president than the usual Skull Club crowd out of Harvard, Yale and Princeton.
There is nothing wrong with a common man who made good serving his country as president.
Exactly right.
Things could get much worse with Jeb Bush or some other chump presiding as president, like Biden or John Kerry.
I think Trump has at least as good sense as anyone running, frankly. He is just unknown to our trust meter. The ones we trust may not rise to the occasion and inspire a victory. Minorities are going to get courted by Trump sooner or later and chances are it will be there first view of inspiration (since Reagan) from our side of the aisle.
I think he may bring them along in a way that no other candidate can.
You need to add several Republicans to your list of unacceptable alternatives.
The establishment is reaping what they sowed..... screw the establishment.
They shouldn’t have ignored the citizen.
