Donald Trumps self-destruction will soon manifest itself in a drop in the polls. The problem remains for those GOP voters still seeking a candidate who is a viable alternative to Jeb Bush. It is not likely to be Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who has been outshone by more credible candidates and again showed bad judgment in trying to ingratiate himself with Trump. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., seems practically irrelevant to the race, and his preference to let the Obama administration negotiate with Iran rather than press for sanctions may be the death knell of his effort..
Who then stands to benefit from the end of the Trump boomlet?
Rubio
Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is one of several. In his recent trip to Iowa, he continued to demonstrate mastery and common sense on foreign affairs. On the National Security Agency, he is sober: This country has lost access to valuable intelligence at a time when we can least afford it, and (the massacre in Chattanooga, Tenn.) is an example of it. ... Radical jihadists have reached our own country, and they are reaching it online and they are radicalizing people here. And we need to know as much about them as possible to prevent future attacks, or were going to have more of them. His best argument for his candidacy may be that the mess President Barack Obama leaves behind will take tremendous skill, knowledge and nerve to undo. (The next president of the United States has to be committed to intelligence programs, to cyber defense capabilities, someone thats committed to a strong foreign policy in which our allies trust us.) In the debates, Rubio will have a chance to show he can throw a punch and take one. His encyclopedic knowledge of policy will serve him well....

Trump could pretty much finish off the field if he started throwing some hand grenades at the following issues:
1. Planned Parenthood and the cannibalizing of baby parts
2. Take on the homosexual Mafia and what it’s doing to Christians and freedom of religion
3. The lawlessness of Obama
4. Islamists
5. The big brother database that Obama is putting together to control where we live
These are all sizzling hot issues that conservatives are aching for someone to unapologetically take on. He could do one every couple of weeks and just watch his poll numbers soar and putzes like Rubin head for the insane asylum.
Well, he may not want to win if that is what it takes. Remember GHWB told Lee Atwater to do “whatever it takes.” But then GHWB grew apologetic and declined to attend Atwater’s funeral in 1991 so he could go sailing instead.
This lady lives in a complete fantasy world.
Hillary and the Democrats.
I don’t see Cruz easily getting attention and the rest of the Republican field isn’t possibly going to be attractive enough to get past the 300 million that will be spent by government employee unions.
Must suck to be Jennifer Rubin.
I would like to agree with you, but I’m not so sure about Trump’s demise just yet. In any case I stand with Cruz, till he’s out and done.
I would be encouraged if Trumps polls went up, and I’m for Cruz.
It would confirm a particular electorate mood that this country needs to survive. IMHO
Trump’s going to self-destruct?
2012 endorsement: Romney
2014 endorsement: Bush
Who?
Why not just vote for Channing Tatum?
How nice of her to tell me what I think. Saves me time.
That’s what she does.
If he gets sick of the media lying attacks, you mean. If he did that to us, why, Hillary would flourish. Dems would go back to her. Republicans are not going back to Jeb, but the media will be made stronger and we will get Jeb on a cold plate.
An awesome même whether he said that or not.
Q: Which prominent republican did NOT endorse Romney in 2012?
(correct answer: they all did!)
I thought the Chicago Tribune was defunct.
I don't know if he will win the nomination, but he is damn sure tough enough to handle the media.
