Bernie Sanders has picked up a key endorsement as one of the nation’s most influential labor leaders has announced his support for the Democratic presidential candidate.
The Sanders campaign made the announcement in a statement:
In another show of union support for Bernie Sanders, one of the nation’s most influential labor leaders on Friday endorsed the Democratic Party presidential candidate.
Larry Cohen, the past president of the Communications Workers of America, gave his backing to Sanders at a news conference held here in a local union hall.
“This is not a close call,” Cohen said at the news conference. “This is a guy who for his entire life has been there for working people.”
“I am proud to have the support of Larry Cohen and so many workers in the American trade union movement,” Sanders said. “They know we need an economy that works for the middle class and not just the wealthy.”
Sanders and Cohen were joined by members from other labor groups including the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the Iron Workers Union, the Laborers’ International Union of North America, National Nurses United, the International Association of Firefighters, the American Postal Workers Union and 75 others.
Cohen’s endorsement was significant because it came on the heels of a Politico report that AFL-CIO head Richard Trumka was working behind the scenes to squash the growing momentum among union members for Bernie Sanders.
The appeal of Bernie Sanders is natural for members of the labor movement who feel like establishment Democrats have not made their concerns a priority.
What is happening is that individuals who have felt ignored are using their support for Bernie Sanders to get their voices heard.
The message to the Democratic leadership is that they are not going to be able to silence the Sanders supporters. Labor is rallying behind Sanders as it is beginning to look Democratic voters may be treated to a competitive primary campaign.
Cross-over voting is the number one problem for conservatives in the primaries. If Hillary runs unopposed, dems will be encouraged to vote for a Jeb in the R primaries. If there is a real contest for the dems, they’ll have to keep their votes to themselves.
It’s with that in mind that I say: Go Bernie!
What does it say about today’s Democratic Party that Bernie Sanders is for them a viable candidate?
Perhaps an avowed socialist has become “viable” only by the realization among progressives that Hillary Clinton is rapidly becoming “non-viable”?
Would John Kennedy even have a chance to be nominated in today’s Democratic Party? I think not.
Is it not possible that Bernie is viable because he is perceived by progressives as occupying an ideological place to the RIGHT of Barack Obama? Is Bernie Sanders the left’s version of learning from the 2014 electoral debacle, and moving toward the center?
Bernie’s vision for America is Sweden, Norway, Denmark. Barack? How about Venezuela? Cuba?
Bernie wants to split up big corporations, Barack Obama shakes them down. So perhaps the progressives have a point.
What does it say about the party that people like Evan Bayh and Mark Warner aren’t pulling off their warm-ups to get in the game? Have they disqualified themselves by not fully embracing global warming and therefore anti-capitalism, as Bernie has? I think so. No money from greens, and no money from wanna-be fascist corporations.
This election is certainly instructive as to the state of today’s Democratic Party. And the media. It is smoking out all the formerly cloaked motivations and ideologies. The party is being revealed for what it’s been for some time now-rotten to the core.

Agree for Big Labor if Hillary wins Hillary the nominee... they will leave in droves

Hey, this is a good thing. I would love to see Bernie “Santa Clause” Sanders, OR SOMEONE, take Hillary out during the Primary season; with a little help from all of her “scandals”. If that evil witch gets the Dem nomination, there is a good chance she will be the next POTUS. We must stop her anyway we can. Maybe it’s time for Rush to revive his “Operation Chaos”.

If what you say is true, and I hope it is, then we could win this thing and keep that evil witch out of the White House. Since the Dems have the Gay, the Black, the Latino and the baby-killer votes, the Labor vote might help us eke out a victory in 2016.
