African American staffers on Capitol Hill plan to stage a protest Thursday in solidarity with similar demonstrations nationwide.
African American Congressional staffers are planning a protest on the U.S. Capitol steps Thursday afternoon, disrupting their workday to speak out against the Eric Garner and Mike Brown grand jury decisions.
The protest follows large demonstrations in New York and other major cities last week, which were held to speak out about the deaths of these two African American men.
Black staffers on Capitol Hill wanted to do something in support of ongoing national and global protests against police aggression, an organizer said, speaking on background because the event hadnt been announced. Many of us felt we needed to stand with others who were taking on the issue of police abuse and do it here, where we work, even though not all of us have had that same experience, personally. Everyone I talked to has known someone whos been directly impacted.
The demonstration will involve staffers interrupting their workday to attend the protest during one of Congress busiest weeks of the year. Congress is currently debating a spending bill to avoid a government shutdown, its annual Pentagon policy bill, and a bill to authorize the president to use military force against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
As black staffers on Capitol Hill, we saw a stark disconnect," the event organizer said. "While we hold education credentials and broad access in the overall political system, often when we walk outside, we contend with the fact that we are seen as dangerous, merely because of the color of our skin.
There was a debate among organizers about how aggressive the action should be: a die-in somewhere in the Capitol Complex and a rally with posters were also considered.
But organizers wanted to do something that would welcome participants, Democrat and Republican, from throughout the House and Senate. These organizers decided more militant tactics could have made the gathering less inclusive, and opted for a more moderate approach.
One thing that all organizers agreed on: that it would not be held during Congressional recess, when their bosses, American Senators and Congressmen, were out of town.
The Congressional Black Associates, Senate Black Legislative Staff Caucus, the Brooke-Revels Society, the Congressional African Staff Association, and the African American Women on the Hill Networkall dedicated to representing African American staffers on Capitol Hillare helping to organize the protest as a "show of unity and solidarity to stand shoulder to shoulder with other peaceful demonstrations."
These groups will be joined by members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Staff Association and the Congressional Hispanic Staff Association.
The event has some precedence: in 2012, some 250 to 300 aides rallied on the U.S. Capitol steps with hoodies, in reaction to the death of Trayvon Martin, the teenager shot in Sanford, Fla. Thursdays event is expected to involve participants posing with the iconic Hands Up, Dont Shoot posture, which has become a staple of protests surrounding the death of Brown in Ferguson, Mo.
The protest is scheduled for Thursday at 3:30pm on the steps in front of the U.S. House of Representatives. Senate Chaplain Dr. Barry Black, who is also African American, will pray for peace, and for the grieving families affected by the grand jury decisions.
Good take the black Dhimmicrat congressmen with you.
Since Congress is exempt from employment laws this is a good way to weed out poor performers. Walk out? Take a hike!
Good, now Fire Them. Get their Spoiled On The Taxpayers money government pampered babies butts out of “OUR” Capitol. This race baited nonsense has gone on long enough. There are no employes more Pampered in pay, benefits, perks, etc than a federal government worker. They’re spoiled brats throwing a tantrum at our expense. Fire Them. I’m certain than many persons who want to work would replace them by the end of the work day. That’s part of the problem in DC also. All offices are manned by DC Liberal Workers even in GOP offices.
They never care about whites burned alive by other blacks, though.....like that poor girl in Mississippi
Now, if I were the Speaker or Senate Majority Leader, I’d be scheduling as many high profile hearings as possible for that day.
It’s pretty much a fact that there are few Democrats who can really think and speak cogently on anything during these events without some staffer feeding them the script.
I think it would be a hoot.
Oh, how this beautiful country of ours would be different today if our forefathers had planted their own cotton and toted their barges.
Uyghur, PLEASE!
For goodness’ sake—get the needed spending restrictions voted on now while they are gone.
Bulack Congressionals Staffers.....Meet the Air Traffic Controllers///
Goodbye......
“Black lives matter”, but only when their deaths can be used to advance the leftist cause.
Not when they are killed by abortionists or other black gang members.
When the worms (newbies) in the patch used to ask my old boss for a day off, he would tell them, "Sure, sure. Take two days. Hell, take a week. Or a month--no, no, take a year.
"In fact, why don't you plan on checking back with us in TWO years, and if we have an open spot we'll sure think about giving you a look."
That's a great idea. Glub.
Don’t these morons care about the blacks who are being killed every day by street thugs? Only those shot by a cop can canonized?
ANOTHER great (Tony the Tiger GGGrrreat) of the PimpPrez and his pals.
Everything they do is intended to indoctrinate the useful idiots.
Obie and The Black Pampers! Thats them
