GOP Race: Romney Leads 'Not Running' Palin in Poll
International Business Times ^ | July 22, 2011 | Staff

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney still leads the 2012 Republican nominee race, but the person who polled second is a bit of a surprise: Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

With Palin in the race, Romney has 26 percent, Palin has 18 percent and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., is third with 12 percent, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News Poll.

However, without Palin in the race, Romney tops the field at 30 percent, Bachmann has 16%, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul has 11 percent, and Texas Governor Rick Perry has 8 percent.

Palin Remains a Factor

The fact that Palin can garner so much support despite not officially running for president speaks to both Palin's ability to remain on voters' minds and also underscores how unenthused, at this relatively early stage of the campaign, Republican voters continue to feel about the existing field.

Still, it's important to underscore that most voters are not paying close attention to the Republican nomination race: 43 percent of those polled said they were only following the 2012 presidential race "somewhat" closely.

The Post/ABC poll was conduct July 14 to 17.

Political Analysis:

Palin's star power continues to surprise. Palin is not in the race. (Officially.) She has about two years experience as a state-level executive. And yet she ranks second, behind Romney, with an 18 percent support rating. That speaks to Palin's ability to give speeches and connect with voters -- mostly conservative voters on issues that are important to them.

Even so, voters should not confuse campaigning skills with governing skills, and it's there where voters are concerned about Palin, and by extension, where Romney has the edge.

That said, voters should not read too much into presidential campaign polls in 2011: this race has not begun yet, if historical survey research is any indicator. Historically, voters don't begin to take the presidential race seriously until well after the start of the election year, in this case February or March of 2012.

Former Governor Romney's "governing skills" brought Massachusetts homosexual marriage, RomneyCare, the big dig and much more. Former Governor Palin brought Alaska: AGIA (Alaska Gasline Inducement Act), which restarted a stalled project to build a pipeline to deliver Alaska’s oil and natural gas to the lower 48, and ACES (Alaskans’ Clear and Equitable Share), which restructured a disastrous system of taxing oil comapnies to one that worked better for both the people of Alaska and the oil companies. Some of Palin’s opponents (such as members of the CBC that were abusing the tax system) have criticized this plan as “redistributing wealth” since it taxes oil companies and gives individual Alaskans a check from oil revenues. However, the Alaskan Constitution specifies that the resources of Alaska belong to the people (not the state, which would be socialist), oil companies were already taxed (but corruption flourished under Gov. Murkowski), and in reality a shareholder model would be the more appropriate analogy. Instead of the state wasting the money, citizens are given back their tax dollars. Big difference.

The jourbalists want Mittens to run so bad, they can taste something other than the usual appendages in their mouths.

This has to be disheartening for those Perry fans that think he is invincible.

He’s only got 8%.

Ouch!

Next to Mittens, the MSM will push him as hard as they can. Because a squishy Texas governor has as good a chance of winning as a squishy MA governor with the added attraction of being a Mormon. That’s how they are pushed. Mittens (sure loss) followed by Perry (90% sure loss).

I’m allergic to RINOS.

My doctor told me that if I didn’t vote for Romney, I should be alright.

My not very important thoughts on Perry are that he seems like an attractive candidate an all and would probably do well. But who is he? I guess we may find out. I just don’t think we need anyone who doesn’t really intend to scorch Obama at every turn. I’d rather we lose with principle. Obama’s going to be very hard to beat, a lot of foks disagree with that. But it’s true, the media will be running interference for him so why not have someone like Palin or Bachmann who will call him out on a national stage? They’ll have to do it through commercials and speeches because there’s no way he will “subject” himself to more than one debate with either Michelle or Sarah if that.

You make a very good point. Obie will not allow himself to be dressed down face to face in public by a female. For whatever reason Hillary held her fire, but neither of these two would.

“voters should not confuse campaigning skills with governing skills”

It seems that people use the term “governing skills” but somehow forget to look at the governing skills.

After seeing the movie The Undefeated, I would like to know what Governor in history even comes close to Palin’s performance in Alaska in terms of problem solving and promise keeping.

I’m admittedly ignorant about the specific historical records of Governors, but knowledge of the general nature of politics tells me that Palin is very likely the best or one of the best Governors we’ve ever had.

No disrespect intended, but the VP from NJ could champion school lunches and childhood obesity.
