With Mike Huckabee's exit from the race, Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin are now on top of the Republican field, according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday.
Twenty percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters say they'd support the former Massachusetts governor, while 18 percent say they'd support the former Alaska governor.
Newt Gingrich comes in third place with 11 percent.
In the April 15-20 poll, Huckabee had 16 percent (tied with Donald Trump). Romney had 13, Palin had 10.
While Romney and Palin now share the top spot, Gallup's positive intensity tracking shows Republicans feeling less enthusiastic about their two top choices than they did about Huckabee as a potential GOP nominee.
Gallup's Frank Newport chalks the latest rankings up to name ID.
Palin, Gingrich, and Romney are the three best-known candidates, and they top the list of Republicans' preferences, he wrote. "Ron Paul and Bachmann are the only other potential candidates with name recognition above 50%. They are also next in line in terms of Republican nomination support.
Paul has 8 percent support, while Bachman came in with 5 percent."(continued)

Mutt got 18%? Way to high! Newt comes in with 11%. That's the best he'll ever do. He hasn't got the smile and Reagan hair of The Mass. Mutter. Mitt's 'I was for it but now I'm against it' RomneyCare is a millstone around his neck. No matter how many speeches he gives, it's made him unelectable. You'll need a weathervane to determine which way Romney will stand on any given issue. Mitt will change his policies at any given moment depending on who is listening. Just too fake, plastic and untrustworthy.

Ive been ‘polled’ by gallup and some other outfit I never heard of. Both times, I lied through my teeth.
Do you think that the media would mention the candidate that most frightens them? The media are but an extension of those who would crush the very idea of America.
not so “unelectable” now eh???
I would say she’s ineluctable.
Lead, follow or get out of the way - the Palin Express is about to leave the station!
Sarah was awesome on Hannity last night and she wouldn’t defend Newt even though his buddy Sean begged her to.
Then on Piers Morgan The Nuge was on for the hour. He gave an amazing glowing endorsement of Palin - Morgan responded “that was the most nauseating thing I’ve ever heard.”
She is the one we’ve been waiting for.
That would include the supposed ‘conservative’ media, such as NRO, that didn’t deem Palin worthy of a mention when discussing who would gain from Huck’s not running.
The media, both left and left center, are scared spitless of the Cuda.
Both on Hannity and Eric Bolling's FNC show at 10 PM, Sarah was excellent and relentless.
She repeatedly said that she will not set her timetable to suit some false deadline based on the lame stream media.
Anyhow, I'm liking her more and more (trying to overlook the folksie mid-western voice but I think she's toning that down as well). There seems to be a little bit more of an aggressive Sara. Less rambling, she still showed a little of that tendency, though she recovered pretty well.
Her point last night was She talking about calling out the "lame-stream media" on their bias but it didn't come across as whining or complaining. It was a very matter-of-fact: this is what we are dealing with as conservatives and this is what we need to do to combat it. She appeared much stronger, dare I say, a little more determined.
Not convinced she could win yet but I would love to see her in the Oval Office. I want to see her more and I want to see her calling out the President on his corruption and calling out the media on their complicity in allowing the administaration to get away with it. It's going to take strength and a good set and she's the ONLY potential candidate that has shown any brass to date. I think the voting conservative public is getting so frustrated with watching the President get away with murder that her strength and determination will resonate with the voters.
...plus, she's still pretty durn hawt! ;-)
That’s because unlike the MSM, NRO pays attention to who is running. Palin is not currently running, nor is she visibly preparing to run. Be fair:
1. NRO talks about Cain, Bachman, etc., because they ARE running.
2. NRO is a blog site, including everyone from David Frum (a worthless, craven anti-conservative, MSM wanna-be) to Jonah Goldberg to Steve Camarotta. Lots of diverse opinion, with no-one representing anyone else.
3. Who can have any doubts that Palin wouldn’t be all over NRO the moment she formed an exploratory committee, participated in a debate, met with local Iowa or New Hampshire leaders, etc.?
Bachman hasn’t even announced an exploratory committee.
Bachmann hasn’t even announced an exploratory committee.
She still has a House seat to defend and has to decide if she is going to be a chicken or a hog.
Not to mention she is only in second within the margin of error. All the pollsters are lib liars, I do not trust them even when they have a good number, from my point of view.
I know she hasn’t a committee, but am I mistaken in the belief that she’s participated in debates and straw polls?
Yes, you are. She wasn’t in the one debate held so far and candidates (or prospective candidates) themselves don’t participate in straw polls.
>> ... and candidates (or prospective candidates) themselves dont participate in straw polls. <<
Uh, yes and no. Candidates frequently make campaign speeches addressing whatever assembly is conducting the straw poll. You don’t necessarily have to present yourself in a straw poll, but it certainly does help, and it’s not something a mere congressperson would do unless they were positioning themselves to run. (Certainly many participants eventually decide against formally declaring, but that doesn’t mean that they weren’t hoping to.)
