Americans have a poor picture on energy issues

The American Petroleum Institute has just released the results of its third annual “Energy IQ” survey, and it reflects that Americans’ knowledge about energy issues is lacking.

The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, comes as President Obama and Congress are pursuing aggressive energy and climate policies that threaten the nation’s economy, and which will determine America’s economic competitiveness for years to come.

Some high points from the survey:

• When asked about the role fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas and coal will play in meeting global energy demand, only 10 percent of respondents answered correctly that fossil fuels will meet 85 percent of this demand. This is the second consecutive year this number has dropped even though EIA figures for future U.S. reliance on fossil fuels have risen by five percent since 2008.

• According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), 12 percent of the oil consumed last year in the U.S. came from the Persian Gulf countries. Only 7 percent of respondents chose correctly, while more than 40 percent believed that over 30 percent of our oil supply came from the Persian Gulf.

• Fifty-three percent of respondents believed that Saudi Arabia was the largest U.S. supplier of imported crude oil. In fact, according to the DOE, Canada is our largest supplier.

The survey showed that Americans have a poor understanding about the financial implications of the oil and natural gas industry:
• Only 15 percent of respondents knew that six million Americans are employed directly or indirectly by the oil and natural gas industry.

• Only 9 percent of respondents knew that oil companies pay more than 40 percent in income taxes as a share of their income. The majority thought that it was less than 30 percent, and one-third of all respondents believed companies pay less than 15 percent.

• Similarly, when asked how much the oil and natural gas industry paid in taxes over the past three years, only 10 percent of respondents answered correctly—$242 billion. One quarter of respondents believed that the U.S. oil and natural gas industry contributed less than $100 billion.

• More than 40 percent of respondents believed that the oil and natural gas industry earn more than 20 cents per every dollar of sales. In fact, the industry earns just below 6 cents on every dollar.

The survey also found that other misconceptions exist about U.S. oil company stock ownership and industry investment in alternative fuels.

This is the natural result of the IQ “Cap and Trade” being practiced by our public schools.

“IQ Cap-and-Trade” ... Isn’t that the truth?

Combined with a dishonest and inept media, it’s no wonder we’re in the shape we’re in.

Perhaps a national media that believes in actually informing people objectively would help.

Somebody needs to sell the energy facts more effectively.

I don't think it is an issue of selling. We are dealing with an extremely ignorant American Idol generation. Just ask people where electricity comes from. They most likely will answer the "light switch". This is as far as most people can think. They can't take it back to the power plant. They can't take it back from plant to energy mining or drilling. They will never take it back even further to the technology that extracts the energy. Even fewer will understand the economic system from production to delivery. They have no clue.

One thing they do understand is cost. This is why the government must be removed almost completely from the energy system. Capitalism will answer to cost.

Americans are very good a placing blame. Instead of selling the need for fossil fuels let us instead sell the blame. If the costs are high then blame the government. If there are shortages blame the government. Further, sell the fact that more government will not reverse the effects of government. Sell the fact that government is bad.

It is almost 100 percent an issue of sales. The other side had effectively sold more expensive energy billed as not xpensive energy. And if one side says, "hey, that's more expensive energy," they are painted as regressive meanies who want to destroy the planet.

Recognize the model for what it is. It's a Twitter world, and we're mailing letters.

No. "23 % of Americans get news online".

Where do most people get their news?

You may be trying to sell twitter, but the majority of Americans get no news or that of occupation propaganda. I call your BS.

Americans have a poor picture => envisioning three federally funded eco-bolsheviks as part of their local zoning department/jurisdiction. They picture an arrogance busy body making house calls. Maybe check the wattage of their daughters hair straightener, who knows how bad the picture will get.

They picture punitive practices.

They see a general disregard for property and privacy rights.

They already know: “you can’t fight town hall”.

They now there will be no knowledge of wrong doing, ever, for fear of litigation. They now the local government will waste vast sums to defend entrenched (personal) positions.

They see the picture, their disgusted already.

It was meant as an analogy, but it’s equally accurate if taken literally.
