Conservatives: Would you vote for this man for President?

Posted on 05/14/2009 7:54:47 AM PDT by MadIsh32

Here goes: This presidential candidate talks pro-life, but has a mixed record on abortion, including passing legislation as governor removing restrictions on abortion. In addition, the person he wants as VP is outspoken in his support of pro-choice, warning against candidates who would throw women back into back alley clinics. He talks about Christian faith, but also openly admits he very rarely goes to church. He has been a supporter of 2nd amendment rights, but also openly endorsed the Brady Bill. He wants to balance the budget partly by tax cuts, but mostly by cutting spending back to around 19% OF GDP (roughly what it was back in the 60s). He also wants a committee to oversee and review gov't regulations, and either repeal, scale back, or allow regulations based on cost benefit analyses.

Yep, he was damn good. And by “campaign event”, i mean a New Mexico event. Backyard, with 30 blue collar guys, brats and enchiladas. It wasnt a big show for a crowd.

A real class act. And i know its kind of a local point. But if you are in NM, there is a fine multi-lane highway that goes from the southeast corner of the state, up to the northwest corner. Beautiful, fast, very safe.

Before that it was a one lane deathtrap, requiring endless passes. Gary Johnson built that for us. He did it ahead of schedule and under budget. He cut off the NM democrats at the knees with a budget trick, so they didnt get their kickbacks and contracts for their friends. They HATED him for that.

Bill Richardson needs a Jet to get around NM. Johnson used a bicycle.

He also had humility, he made a remark about low riders and drive by shootings that inflamed a lot of people. He said he just said what he had always believed. So he decided to go cruising with a low rider one friday night. Had a good time and mended some fences.

Of course, the low rider he rode with shot someone a few months later. (to the dems chagrin) I wish this country would take a chance on a guy like him who really loves our constitution, and just has an all around good attitude towards life.

Heres the best way to view him. When Rush challenged Obama to a public debate and Obama chickened out. Johnson would have gone, guaranteed.

Im sure she’s great, but i won’t ever vote for another “legacy”. We are developing a ruling class, and it is being too hereditary. Wonder how many in congress and senate today come from political “families”.

He may have some details wrong, but im sure he is correct about some of it. Its hard to argue that international bankers are not manipulating business to the eternal disadvantage of a more American nationalist point of view.

*Someone* is making that occur and is ensuring government greases the skids. Examples our last several elections; Obama vs McCain, Bush vs Kerry, Bush vs Gore, Clinton vs Dole, Clinton vs BushI. A clear pattern of no matter who wins, trilateral world banker types always win. (im probably crazy too,, so dont be cruel to the obviously retarded!)

And i know we arent allowed to think about drugs being a conspiracy. But right now, our troops are forbidden from interferring with poppy fields in Afghanistan. And the greatest erosion in individual rights in your person AND your banking are coming from the WOD.

Johnson just saw WOD as a modern liquor prohibition, creating more crime than it solves. He always said it was an incredibly bad choice to use drugs.

Ronald Wilson Reagan was not perfect. I doubt most of his supporters think he was. Those supporters to an individual know that no man is. They are also able to discern the difference between Ronald Reagan and some other people who want to be thought of as the next Ronald Reagan. What’s surprising about some of these wannabes, is that they also think that we should move on from that old worn out icon, Ronald Reagan. Now moderatism is the operative word of the day. My friends, Ronald Reagan was no moderate, and this is one Conservative that never will be.

When a candidate’s supporters start dissecting Ronald Reagan, I realize the level of desperation that is behind it. I’m not going to list what Ronald Reagan accomplished. If folks don’t know by now, it would pointless to do so.

Lets look for a moment at two presidential races.

Carter

defense - cut it
international relations - cut off our allies - talk nice to our enemies - walk small
problems with governance - blame the populace
times are tough - trash expectations as unrealistic, tell the public our days as the premier nation on planet earth are over
our nation - accentuate negatives and appologize for it’s flaws ignoring it’s incredible positive aspects

Reagan

defense - rebuild it
international relations - strengthen our alliances - tell our enemies they’re in trouble - walk tall
problems with governance - explain that government is the problem - it is not the answer
times are tough - build expectations - appeal to our better selves - tell them you haven’t seen anything yet - cut taxes - stimulate growth
our nation - champion it across the board - make no apologies - sell it’s concepts to others

Obama

defense - cut it
international relations - cut off our allies - talk nice to our enemies - walk small
problems with governance - blame the populace
times are tough - trash expectations as unrealistic - tell them our days as the premier nation on planet earth are over - scare the hell out of the public making the problems worse
our nation - accentuate and appologize for it’s flaws and forget about it’s incredible positive aspects
illegal immigration - make them citizens

McCain

defense - cut it
international relations - tolerate our allies - close Gitmo - walk hunched over
problems with governance - support massive big government programs - abandon capitalist free enterprise
times are tough - scare the hell out of the public making the problems worse
our nation - compliment Obama on much of what he says and does
illegal immigration - make them citizens

Reagan was sellable because he was a stark departure from Carter, and supportable as well as a truly likable individual.

McCain was not sellable because he was not a stark departure from Obama, he wasn’t supportable, and was despised by a large segment of those he wanted to support him.

Ronald Regan’s polices doubled the governments reveneues.

The Congressional spending under Reagan exceeded the revenues.

John McCain is not a Ronald Reagan
Mitt Romney is not a Ronald Reagan

There isn’t a Ronald Reagan amongst the people who will prevail at this new rebranding of the Republican Party

So go ahead and hawk these Reagan wanna bes. Make list after list of how bad Ronald Reagan was, and how great your candidate really is.

Then on election day, you go out and vote for them, while the rest of us leave the top slot blank.

If you folks would put half as much energy into pushing the party back to the right, as you do defending candidates from the left, we might just get somewhere.

Get behind a Conservative and push the party to the right, I’m right there with you.

When that becomes your goal, be sure to remember where I am. I’ll be right here with the other Conservatives who won’t be buying into your nonsense.

Stupid people shouldn’t breed.

And if they do happen to get pregnant, it's okay with you (obviously) if they kill that baby.

You can call yourself pro-life all you want, but that is not a pro-life position. That's closer to the Margaret Sanger point of view.

Reagan signed on to an amnesty and new policies that were designed to put an end to illegal immigration.

He signed on to grant amnesty to 1.5 million people, what the experts promised the factual number was. 3.5 million people took advantage of the program.

The new laws that would have put employers on notice, tighten the borders, and make it much harder for illegal to operate here, were essentially ignored by Bush, Clinton, Bush, and now Obama. None of these presidents took advantage of the laws on our books, to prevent the illegal immigration problems we now have.

At every turn people who wish to put an end to this illegal immigration situation are told legislation cannot fix this. Truth be told, we have the legislation to fix this on the books already. Our leaders have chosen not to enforce them.

Reagan tried to grant amnestly to something like 0.15% of our then populace. Today we face granting amnesty to in the neighborhood of 6.66 to 10.25% of the current population.

Reagan’s 1.5 million had accumulated since 1966. In twenty years, we were thought to have taken in 1.5 million illegals. That’s a number that equates to about 75,000 per year.

Today we are said to have 11 million here. The adjustment to the 2000 amnesty put the figure at around 8.5 million. The government today wants us to accept that 8.5 million came across our borders in the 1990s, but only 3.5 million have come over since.

We have had between 850 thousand to 2 million people coming across our border each year since 1990.

So you tell me, is what we are facing today, what Reagan faced in his day?

By your inference, it is. So much for your credibility.

I didn’t answer your question. Yes, I opposed the move. I knew that the liberals would game the system. That hasn’t changed in over twenty years.

It is the same damn thing, i.e our laws being broken and illegals living and working in our country

The point of this whole exercise is that the older generation of cons (I am only 27) was willing to look at the overall picture and not litmus test Reagan out of a chance at becoming the greatest President of the 20th century

Could you imagine what would have happened to him had we held him to the same standards that we do conservatives today?

Reagan would do as well today as he did in 1980. Mitt Romney simply can’t. You have to dismiss too many positives about Reagan, to classify him as no better than today’s crop of politicians.

Without meaning to be, you are an example of what I think is one of our biggest threats to our nation today.

It has been so long since we actually had a true Conservative present real Conservative values to the nation, that many adults can’t relate to the last man who did.

If you wish to boil Reagan down to the traits you have mentioned, you will have to boil off an incredible amount of good that overshadowed what you are talking about.

Today probably less than 30% of our populace can remember the Reagan years. And although you have been fed some interesting aspects of Reagan, you haven’t been fed the best parts.

Reagan stood head and shoulders above all the other players in the Republican party in 1980. If he were running today, he would tower over today’s crew even more.

I’m sorry you can’t remember Reagan all that well. And you know what, it isn’t your fault. Our leaders should be heralding Conservatism and what Reagan stood for. Instead they want to declare is era dead (that’s how disconnected they are), and his values as if they died with him.

Reagan’s values were eternal.

You really don’t have a clue, especially about President Reagan.

I worked at his headquarters when he first ran for Gov.
I saw and heard his speeches many times in person as Gov. and when he was Pres.
I also met him.

Your talking points are the usual combination of Liberal and third party.

Your support for Sanford is a joke. A RINO Paul clone
and a person who speaks and looks like a funeral director,
who outside of his state is a non starter.

I knew you'd deliver the straight skinny better than any other single human being on this board, past or present.
Close tie to the old man himself, of course. :^)

What I *didn't* expect?
Was to be blown away -- by your raptor sharp memory, impeccable logic couped with your ability to bring perspective and an unyielding sense of justice.
All wrapped up in real, genuine conservatism.
Same stuff that turned me *on*, brought me to a point I could *see* the light.

I am humbled.
Wished I could return to you a fraction of that you've imparted to me.
Helluva guy, that's you pal.

Thank you. ;^)

You are very kind, but I am undeserving.

Ronald Reagan wouldn’t have started a thread like this. He would have pointed to the positives and have capitalized on them.

This thread started out by focusing on the negatives, and heralding the significance of them, and how they relate to folks who today refuse to vote for people who “DO NOT GET” Conservatism.

Reagan in his day was angered by Conservatives who didn’t get it, but he brought them around on both sides of the isle. Look at what he got passed in the Democrat controlled Congress. And he was able to do it, and still be admired by people like Tip O’Neil, his antithesis in the Democrat ranks, and yet ultimately a good friend.

They don’t make many like Ronald Reagan. He was a mans man and a gentleman. Those of us who remember him, miss him a great deal. So does the soul of our nation, looking back, and into the future.

Thank you my friend. I appreciate the ping to this thread very much Landru.
