Texas Mayor Files for Tom DeLay's Seat
Newsmax ^ | August 11, 2006

Sugar Land's Republican mayor on Friday became the first person to file as a write-in candidate on the ballot for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who resigned from Congress in June amid allegations of money laundering.

DeLay tried to render himself ineligible for the race by moving to Virginia so that another Republican could replace him on the ballot for the suburban Houston seat.

But a federal appeals court ruled last week that DeLay, who won the March Republican primary election, is still eligible and must remain on the Nov. 7 ballot, leaving state Republicans to organize behind a write-in candidate.

Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace filed his application Friday. Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs has said she would run for the seat only if the GOP said it would backed her.

David Wallace seems like the logical choice. It's not only because he's widely known in Sugar Land, but because his name is easy to spell. In a write-in campaign, that is an important factor, and Shelley Sekula-Gibbs is very easy to misspell.

Why doesn't Delay just run?
He'd win the seat in a heartbeat.
Instead we have the possibility of 2 or more Republican write-in candidates, something that will split the Republican vote.
That's just not great.

You can say that again.

DeLay has been polling very poorly. Furthermore, Republicans might be able to clear the field. At the very least, they could give David Wallace the financial backing to remind voters to write in his name. Other write-in candidates won't have that option.

Well what Republicans should do, is persuade all other candidates to drop out for the one single candidate they decide on.
If they have more than one candidate, it's just not gonna work, especially since they are write-in candidates.
This shouldn't be too hard, should it?

No it shouldn't. But Wallace was already the choice of most Republicans anyway, so that would make little difference. In fact, Wallace wouldn't have jumped into the race if that weren't the case.

Misspelled names are acceptable. When Strom Thurmond was elected in 1954 in SC, officials accepted the spelling "Storm Thunder" in one case.

I disagree with that. Wallace *isn't* the choice of most Republicans. That's why he jumped the gun and filed to be the write-in candidate before the Republicans could make a decision. He's trying to force the party's hand, and a lot of people are angry at Wallace because of it.

Nonsense. It's easy to spell: R-I-N-O.

Christ, I hope there is just one Republican, and with an easy-to-spell name.

We are not very good about sticking together, but we had better be this time, or DeLay's seat will be lost.

The reason we Republicans must stick together is that so much in this society works against us.

Don't panic. Even if the 'Rat Lampson wins the seat by default, he'll be to this seat in 2008 what Steve Stockman was to his old one in '96, a soon-to-be-shuffled out one-termer.

OR he could serve one term, then run against Senator John Cornyn.

Why is Tom DeLay so eager to get off of the ballot? Might he have made a secret deal with the Justice Department or the state attorney general's office in exchange for doing so? I mean if it were supposedly just for the good of the GOP, why would he have surrendered this seat to Nick Lampson like he's essentially just done? No Republican has ever won a house seat in Texas as a write-in candidate, after all. Any thoughts, even ones that you'd prefer to offer in a private mail?

Rats have a way of holding onto seats that they weren't supposed to win. They are just better and more dedicated players of the power game.

The analogy to Steve Stockman doesn't work because Stockman was a completely inexperienced newcomer. Lampson has been in Congress before, and I believe has been re-elected.

Also, even in the unlikely event that you're right and he's tossed out after one term, we can't afford to lose DeLay's seat this year because we can't afford to have a Rat-controlled House.
