Weekly wrapup of Virginia Campaign News. Post 'em if you've got 'em...

Last week's thread:
Virginia Campaign News - Monday, August 15 - Well, I'm back

From today's RTD:

The education of Russ Potts
His past prompts change of heart
Now running as a straight-talking independent for governor, state Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. of Winchester said he has made mistakes and learned from them...Besides, he said in a recent interview, he is now free of the shackles "of the extreme right wing of my party." He considers himself a Republican in the mold of U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

I'm thinking less John McCain, more Howard Dean...

Happy Birthday Governor-Elect Kilgore

From today's RTD:

Mayor's wishes backed; Kilgore isn't
Republican seeking mayor's endorsement in race for governor
by David Ress
The former governor had a wish list: 10 things Richmond needs...The wannabe governor had just one wish: an endorsement from the former governor, Richmond Mayor L. Douglas Wilder.

I'm not familiar with the writings of David Ress, but he looks like a Jeffy Schapiro in training. The headline and the beginning of the article make it sound like Wilder said he won't endorse Kilgore.

But the FACTS are (buried at the end of the article) that Wilder wants to meet with all three candidates and has made no commitment to endorse or not to endorse any of them.

Kilgore faulted for gang remarks
N.Va. prosecutors and FBI cite no evidence of MS-13, al-Qaida tie
by Jeff Schapiro
Democratic prosecutors in Northern Virginia are accusing the Republican gubernatorial nominee of attempting to "pander to the fears" of voters by suggesting a tie between a deadly Central American street gang and al-Qaida.

So, according to the RAT prosecutors there's no reason to fear a "deadly Central American street gang" if it's not connected to al-Qaida?????????

Virginia group pushes voting equipment with paper audit
by Tyler Whitley
Virginia's voting machine of choice got a going-over yesterday from a grass-roots group and computer experts.

Deeds praises 'small-town way of life'
He targets Southwest and Southside in his campaign radio ad for attorney general
by Michael Hardy
Sometimes, politics is best played on your home turf. State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds of Bath County, the Democratic candidate for attorney general, is doing that by running a radio advertisement that emphasizes his rural roots and values.

Kaine will debate Potts after debating Kilgore
by Tyler Whitley
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Timothy M. Kaine and independent candidate H. Russell Potts Jr. have agreed to debate on Sept. 13 -- after Kaine and Republican Jerry W. Kilgore debate in front of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce.

This will give Timmy the chance to take both sides of the issues...

Kilgore is urged to make testimony available to public
Ex-attorney general is asked to get order on deposition lifted
by Tyler Whitley
The Democratic Party of Virginia is asking Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore to get a protective order lifted that has prevented the public dissemination of Kilgore's testimony in an eavesdropping lawsuit.

Thursday...

From the RTD:

Potts meets and greets Wilder
Second candidate to visit mayor, second to hope for his backing
by David Ress
It was Wilder and the Would-Be Governor, Part 2. And when gubernatorial candidate H. Russell Potts Jr. came to City Hall to meet Mayor L. Douglas Wilder yesterday, he showed just how independent he is.

Byrne advocates 'grannycams'
Lieutenant-governor hopeful wants nursing homes to permit them
by Pamela Stallsmith
Democrat Leslie L. Byrne wants nursing home residents or their guardians to be able to install so-called "grannycams" in their rooms to monitor their care.

My mother-in-law lives with us. I can assure you, there will be no "grannycam" for the Stormhands family. Visiting granny is also a way to monitor her care.

Kilgore wants 'more welcoming' policies
It should be 'easier for immigrants to come to this nation legally,' the GOP gubernatorial candidate says
by Jeffy Schapiro
After plunging into a controversy over illegal immigrants in Northern Virginia, the Republican nominee for governor is vowing to Hispanics to work for federal policies "more welcoming" of the foreign born.

Rather different slant on the Potts/Wilder meeting than Ress took with the Kilgore/Wilder meeting, isn't it?

I did get a chuckle when I noticed his contact info....he he mail is "dress"..

I'm really coming to dislike Jeffy...........

Marty Kilgore was here on the shore earlier this week - I couldn't attend the public reception, but I have a republican Women's meeting on Saturday, so I'm sure I'll get a full report. According to the article in yesterday's paper (which isn't in the online version) he is still promising to come to the shore - but no date has been set.

Potts said: "We have the kind of friendship where I'll be able to walk across the street and ask him what he thinks." Capitol Square is across Broad Street from City Hall.

Earth to Russ. Earth to Russ.

The GOVERNOR is going to "walk across the street" to the MAYOR's office???

Bliley attacks Kaine's stint as mayor
Comments contradict 2001 statement that praised the Democrat
by Tyler Whitley
Thomas J. Bliley Jr., former Republican congressman and Richmond mayor, called Democratic gubernatorial candidate Timothy M. Kaine "a mediocre mayor" yesterday. Kaine was mayor of Richmond from 1998 to 2001.

Byrne seeking to draw women to her campaign
by Pamela Stallsmith
On the 85th anniversary of the passage of the constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote, Democrat Leslie L. Byrne yesterday launched a grass-roots effort to draw women to her campaign for lieutenant governor.

mmmmm....husky...burley...unshaven wimmin...

She said there were 740,284 women who voted in last year's national election but not in the 2001 statewide contests.

Um...maybe because twice as many people voted in the 2004 election as did in the 2001 statewide election.

Of course women and children were hit the hardest...

'Draft Warner' group encourages White House bid
Governor is not trying to halt effort; it has organizers in 23 states
by Tyler Whitley
Gov. Mark R. Warner hasn't said whether he plans to run for president in 2008, but he hasn't tried to stop a grassroots campaign to draft him either.

..."This is something political junkies are doing," she said.

Way to treat your supporters Mame!

Kaine blasts critics, 'pigeons'
Democrat shoots clay targets in announcing organization of sportsmen who back him
by Rex Bowman
HARDY -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Timothy M. Kaine fired back yesterday at critics who say he's not a wholehearted supporter of the right to bear arms: He borrowed a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot clay pigeons.

Borrowed a shotgun?????

must...have...pictures....oh look, I found one...
