Is this a sign of what will happen in Nov 2004? A teacher in my school is publicly supporting GW.
Vanity | summer

Well, this is a rare vanity in General Chat from me, but I had to tell someone how surprised I was today, to walk into a classroom of a fellow teacher, to see: a large color photo of GW and the First Lady, posted prominently on the wall as soon you walk into this teacher's classroom.

The photo from GW's campaign included this teacher's name on it, thanking this teacher for supporting GW here in FL.

This teacher and I have never discussed politics at all, and I had no idea whatsoever that she would be for GW. I was quite surprised.

I'm wondering if this is a sign of things to come - GW winning it in a bigger margin than expected.

I know some of you will want to know what grade, etc. this teacher is teaching, but I would rather not say anything more, except that: I did not ever assume this teacher was a GW supporter.

But, she is. (And, she is an excellent teacher.)

I actually think there is a quiet shift in many educators, moving to support GW and the GOP. Frankly, when Dems were in power, I do not recall any focus whatsoever on education. I think other educators share my memory of teachers being dead last on the list of who matters in this country when Clinton was president. Clinton had an education summit, and didn't even invite teachers. GW and Laura Bush, as well as Gov Bush, have kept education on the front burner. I believe some teachers actually know this.

There were several Bush/Cheney 2000 bumper stickers in our teacher parking lot, including one on my car. Haven't looked to see who's gotten new ones for this year...it's early yet.

Yes, it's early - but it seems like this campaign season is already underway. Thanks for your post, Amelia. :)

What's gonna happen when little Johnny, Mary, Tyrone or Shaquana goes home and tells their lazy ass, welfare dependant parents that the man that they curse every night on t.v. has his picture prominently placed in their classroom?

I don't know. But several students were looking at the photo, and were quite interested in it. I am sure the topic will come up when these students are home.

as long as they don't throw money at the pot and keep fighting for vouchers, I'm alright with it

From your post, I take it that your "surprise" was that there was a picture of President Bush and the First Lady in a classroom, rather than there was a picture of President Bush and the First Lady in this specific teacher's classroom.

If I interpreted that correctly, I take it that it's not a common practice, at least at the school you teach at, to have the current President's picture in a classroom. (I must admit total ignorance as to what the normal, accepted practice is at the majority of schools.)

I'm curious as to what your reaction would have been to walk into a fellow teacher's classroom some 5 years ago to find a picture like this.

Thanks summer,

The last year our son played water polo in a California school in the spring after 9-11. We saw and approved "God Bless the USA" displayed in classroom windows for outside viewing. Maybe the times are a changing again.

Sadly, they school took the signs down and did not replacement the following year.

I don't think I was as politically aware back then, so it's hard to say.

But with respect to what happened today - I guess I am wondering: will anyone ask her to remove it? Will a parent complain? I am thinking this is not the end of this story, but rather, the first chapter.

Although, I was aware enough to notice teachers did not seem to matter much to Dem leaders.

That's interesting. We had a "God bless America" bulletin board up in the hallway at the beginning of the year, and a CHristmas tree in the front hall at Christmas, for the first time. There is a lot of diversity in our school, in terms of both students and teachers, but no one complained as far as I know.

If displaying the current President's picture in a classroom is not the normal practice as it is in most gov't offices, I suspect that some 'rat will see that it's removed, lest some impressionable mind be influenced to admire and respect a Republican President.
