Oh, you're poor hubby, using NPR as an appetite suppressant ;-)

Thank you for this, habs. I have been avoiding green beans during induction. Your remark sent me to the chart in the front of the Updated Adkins book, and sure enough, green beans have 4.9 carbs per half cup. As compared to cauliflower @ 4.4 (6 flowerettes) and broccoli @ 3.9 per half cup.

Thank you for calling my attention to this. I'd gotten into a rut and a mindset thinking I needed to avoid green beans.

BTW: Do you understand how this subtracting of fiber numbers from carb numbers works? Is it 1 for 1? My son mentioned this to me the other day. It is a topic I apparently didn't retain as I was speed reading thru the book.

Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I'm rushed today and can't possibly scan Carlo's entire previous thread for this piece of information.

If in doubt, just cut down on the portion size on your veggies to manage your carbs. One thing I like is a classic green bean and mushroom salad, using cooked beans and fresh sliced 'shrooms in a vinagrette. It's a great combo.

Sad, but not necessarily shocking to me.

I think the armed forces ought spend more of their time on outing these people than they do on outing gays.

There are many things I can/want to say on this entire issue, but can't in public.

I am stunned and very angry about this Islamic chaplain.

This is worse than anyone can imagine......he feed info back to AQ.....so all info gleamed from Gitmo prisoners is tainted. I wonder how many American lives have been lost because of this treasonous Islamic holy man.

He was from Patriot Battery officer before becoming a chaplain........so that weapon system I suspect has been compromised.

Like I said I am very pissed.

Hi, Dog. If you remember I questioned the use of some of these chaplains last year. I bet there are more spies here than we even think, and you know I am still suspicious of the Chinese who are here.

Went downtown to get my brother's birthday present. There is a family-owned German sausage shop that makes their own bratwurst, mettwurst, kielbasa, etc. I bought my brother a nice variety of different sausages for the grill. We also bought some stuff for ourselves. Then we took the present to my brother, who thought it was a great gift. Back home and planted some more bulbs. Mosquitos were bad even at late morning on a sunny day! Husband is off to his office for a bit and I am going out to do some work in the yard, but I thought I would check in here first.

Hi all!

No LB, my husband likes to listen to NPR - he finds it amusing & instructive, and

habs, it doesn't suppress his appetite:-(

Anyway, he's taking a nap, and when he get's up, we're headed outside to dow some work: reordering the storage shed.

One problem, he's had for the past months is his working on a book & a website, and spending too much time at the computer which = too little exercise.

Afternoon, all. I am at Trill's helping her with some repairs and doing some more packing.

MM, the sausages are a great gift idea.

Uh oh...I take it because Chair didn't start this thread that he is still without power....I lost power late Thursday and got it back this morning. I know Chair is near the Potomac and I think they are still expecting a crest as the water runs out of the mountains into the River. I'll check yesterday's thread to see what I missed.

Missed you guys and had to put up with a grumpy husband who felt that this hurricane was somehow personally aimed at him. He's an engineer and being without electricity and the battery run down on his laptop was almost more than he (and I!) could stand.

Glad to have electricity back - - I wonder how our forebears built such a great nation without it?

Fairfax County Virginia now has its water plants back online, but it still telling everyone to boil water before using, until they can get in and flush the lines and test it. Living on bottled water at the moment. Otherwise, things are 100% better than yesterday. Didn't look like we lost any shingles (heard wind gusts were above 60 mph) and just got lots of leaves and some small twigs down. No big trees down on our street.

Lots of rain....

As a funny, my neighbor and I were talking outside and she pointed to the beautiful red rose on the rosebush in my front yard. I said, "yeah, and probably by tomorrow it'll be in Loudon county!". Well, when I went out yesterday to check on damage, there was that rose, with not a petal missing, while all around it were scattered leaves and tree debris. Immediately upon looking at it, I was impressed with the notion that our safety was at the hand of God, and that this little rose was a testament to His faithfulness.

Well, gotta put away the hurricane lamps, wind-up radios, candles, etc., and try to clean up the debris we tracked into the house.....and do laundry...and dishes....and vacuum...dust.....and make some meals because most restaurants are closed until the "all clear" is given on the water situation.

Take care all! I'm going to check the hurricane threads to see how other Freepers made out.....

Understand your frustration, and certainly hope you've heard from your daughter by now!

Another tack I've taken is to explain to son: it's not a mother/child thing, it's just plain considerate to let a person who cares about you know under certain circumstances -blizzards, travel, hurricanes, tornadoes !! - how you are!

First son is really pretty forthcoming, but NOT second son....BUT at 20, HE went to India, and that CURED me of ever worrying about him AGAIN! LOL!

So sad about your family's friend. Hope time and faith bring some comfort to them and all touched by the loss.

Now I want to write about our young friend at Ft. Sam Houston.

We hear about him from his father, and from our son, longtime buddy of his.

Ian is doing very well in both the physical aspects/ training and in the particularized medical training area as well.

A few weeks ago, for the first time, he failed some physical exercise, and his Dad speculated that his NCO just didn't want him to think everything was too easy. Who knows...

And now he's passed the first medical test - one which has a first time 50% failure rate , by even already trained emergency people, supposedly.

My husband was speculating that maybe this unit doesn't get too many Eagle Scout/college students (senior) in it, and I said, maybe not, but , I may know of another!

Not sure if your youngest was the Eagle Scout, but he does have a year of college behind him...

So that's my report, and will pass on anymore I hear.

Thanks for checking in ..... it's so heartening to have more and more of our FReepers getting back on-line with reports of no major damage (though one did have a tree come through his roof ... YIKES! ..... I think it was Interesting Times, if you know him).

And it's good to hear of power being restored in Fairfax County. Maybe before long we'll hear from daughter-child. My heart tells me she's ok but it will certainly be good to hear it from her!

Your rose story brought chill bumps! God is great; God is good!

Thanks so much for sharing that lovely testament with us.

Thanks for sharing this. Evan isn't an Eagle Scout, but he attained the next highest rank (Life Scout.); and he has two years of college in. He was talking about his future Fort Sam Houston experience last night......apparently at his last Guard weekend they showed a video re: medic training and it fired up his enthusiasm big-time....

No Herb Faire for us today. Ran out of time. But we did buy TWO cars............used, of course, but nice enough.

Don't know about daughter ..... :-(

We're assuming that we would have been notified if anything drastic had happened so are are figuring that they are ok. But I am eager to hear from her. Her phones were out even Thursday evening. The last we've heard from her was about 11:00 Thursday night when she sent an email ..... at that time, things hadn't been too bad she said .... but the worst of the storm came later. And, obviously, she is without power.
