(vanity) Extremely close call w/cager yesterday

Had a very close call at an intersection yesterday with a doddering old woman who ran a red light and puttered across at least four lanes of traffic.
She seemed oblivious to the screeching tires and honking horns. Meanwhile, she almost had me as a hood ornament.

Was wearing something very much like this yesterday under a shirt -- the velcro "belt" adds nice lumbar support with the back protector.

MARRY A BIG, FAT TATTOOED WOMAN
AND YOU HAVE
WARMTH IN THE WINTER
SHADE IN THE SUMMER

Motorcyclist fatally strikes vehicle
Anthony Wetherald was riding north on U.S. 1 when the car drove into his path.
By Gabriel Margasak staff writer
July 8, 2003
HOBE SOUND A Hobe Sound man was killed on his motorcycle early Monday after he was hit by another driver, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
Anthony Wetherald, 26, died after the 7:30 a.m. crash, troopers stated.
The crash occurred as Hobe Sound resident Jimmy John Stewart, 34, was turning south on to U.S. 1 from westbound Southeast Hobe Terrace in a 2003 Ford.
Stewart drove "directly into the path of" Wetherald, who was riding north on U.S. 1 on his 2003 Buell motorcycle, the FHP reported.
Stewart and passenger Tyler Winkler, 15, both of 7299 S.E. Hobe Terrace, were not injured. Both were wearing seat belts, the FHP reported.
Wetherald was thrown from the bike and landed in the northbound lane of U.S. 1.
Troopers are investigating the crash and charges are pending, the FHP reported.

If I understand the schematics right, that situation was practically identical to mine.

That's how most bike deaths occur.
WHen riding in the right hand lane, use the right hand side of the lane so cross traffic sees you. Same in left hand lane. Never ride down the grease spot.
Give cage drivers ample room in front of you so that when they make their inevitable stupid move you are ready to bail.
Drivers turning onto highways are accustomed to entering after they determine their space via the position of the last CAR in a pack. Don't be the biker hiding behind the last car. Ever!
Lastly, spell my name correctly in your will.

Let me add one more to your list:
ALWAYS BE AWARE OF THE EVIL IN THE MIRROR!!!I got slammed from rear by an unlicensed, unisnsured, illegal alien back in '94. I was stopped behind a large commercial van at a stop light in the right lane. Big ol cadidliac in the left lane waiting as well.
My Mistake was not angling away from the rear of the van! Looked in the mirror to see an old ford station wagon barreling down on meself...and no where to go.
Needless to say, but that ford slammed me into the back of the van at about 28 mph...the sled and I flew into the van and launched through the air about 8 feet and onto the caddy beside me.
Broken lumbar vertibraes and a busted knee was the payoff, took 5 months to rebuild that heritage softail! And 9 years later I still endure pain from that one!
First question from the county mounty was "Was he wearing a helmet?"...yes I was...
Now get this...the perp wasn't even charged!
So remember! Always look for the evil in the mirror! And point that front wheel in a getaway path when stopping in traffic!

The only time I've dropped on the asphalt was in '91 with my old '75 Honda 550K. Hit a big, wide patch of oil or tranny fluid on a freeway offramp on Hwy. 101 in Sunnyvale CA. Was all leaned over and set up - the oil was too wide to evade. Damn.
Normally, a very busy offramp. Thank god it wasn't that day, or I'da been squished quick, being in the middle of the road and all. Sore elbow (had leather jacket on) and cracked fairing; got the bike up and off the pavement quicklike.
Other than that - doin' good!
