Your letter was really great, Frank. I hope your mother continues to speak to you after she gets it, but you did the right thing. She should be proud to have a son like you.

Seems like I've found quite a few 'long lost brothers'. Mom never told me...

Isn't it odd how kids coming from the same upbringing turn out so differently? I have one who voted for Nader, one who is a conservative and voted for Bush and one who never votes at all. Crazy.

My mom's dead, but I am more than sure she would still be her old socialist democrat self and would have voted for Clinton. Go figure.

It's funny but we never talk politics when we're together. One lives in Anchorage so we never talk politics when we see him (once ever 6 years or so, maybe). My one son and I agree on most things political so it wouldn't be any fun razzing him about his beliefs.

Frank, your letter is wonderful. If your mother can be saved at all, this will start her thinking.

Pay no attention to those who say that you shouldn't bother. Remember what Bush said, "One by one." And we're seeing it working. My prayers are that your mother will open her mind to the truth.

By the way, I'm saving your letter to your mother as an example of what to say to the clueless leftists.

Oh, I forgot to add that the answer to how much will this war cost is:

How much will it cost this country if Saddam levels a city or several cities and a few nuclear plants?

I equate Bush with dictatorship. Yes, with Hitler...

Your mother is so out of touch with reality that all you can do is pray for her. That's the policy that I've adopted with my mother-in-law 8-)

That's funny! My older daughter voted for Nader, too, younger one voted for Bush of course.

I didn't have a problem with the older one's vote - it was one less for Owlgore!

Good letter. Same situation in my family, don't be disappointed if nothing comes of it. Liberals don't seem to want to see our side. Its like their brains might explode to find out they are wrong, so they protect their thoughts...feelings...with all their energy. Good luck to you.

Frank sounds like your mom has been listening to the DNC talking points, or she sent you their form letter.

Ask her to listen to the other side for equal time. Give her the link to FR.

In my experience, when you try to logic with a liberal, they can't argue based on facts. After they realize that, they just call you a nazi or facist. I hope you post her reply.

I've got to agree with you here. Some of my in-laws just love bubba. They said to me, once, he is a good president. I simply asked what he had done as president that was so good. At that point they said they didn't want to talk politics with me anymore. Now I just smile after I make references to how some of our current problems could have been handled if adults had been in office in the recent past. They frown and have no response. Their biggest problem is their feelings have no facts and they think since I have so many facts that I have no feelings.

Can you IMAGINE a worse fate than being seen as "less relevant" in the eyes of Europeans?

Frank, I know you want to do what's right here and you are probably a stand up guy.. But your mother and father are so valuable I would suggest you tread easy on political matters with immediate family.

I would drop back to subtleties and little reminders if it were me.

Very low key & humble, as these are your parents.

Frank, we may have the same mother (LOL).

I came to the conclusion a while ago that someone like my/your mom can't be reasoned with. Therefore don't try--it only causes wounded feelings, feuds, and things that in the long run you'll regret after your parents are dead.

My 75 year old mother is a "My way or the highway" raging leftist, a card-carrying member of N.O.W., NARAL, The Feminist Majority, GreenPeace, The ACLU, Planned Parenthood, etc. I spent many younger years of my life arguing with her about everything (including politics), and all it did was cause hurt feelings and enstrangement. You're not going to convince your mother of anything, period.

How I ultimately dealt with my mother whenever she'd try to start a political argument with me:

I basically told her (several times):

"Mom, I love you, and I believe that good people can disagree on important things. I don't want to argue about politics. You have your beliefs, and I have mine, and we aren't going to change each others' minds. I don't want to debate politics with you because all it does is make you angry. You're 75 years old, and we don't have forever to fight and make up anymore. Life is just too short. Let's agree to disagree and focus on things we do agree on--like the world's most beautiful/smartest grand daughter (my daughter)."

I love my mom, and I respect what she went through to raise me. However, we are very different people, I probably wouldn't choose her as a friend, and our values are very, very different. By handling things the way I have with her, we have reached a lasting truce (finally).

Dear Frank,

I have two adopted children, and would be happy to have a third (assuming your college bills are paid and you don't mind becoming a Texan). FReep mail me with the details if you want me to get the ball rolling at my end. ;-)

Good luck,

Dad
